FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 28, 2019 Contact: Deirdre Roddin (212) 875-5700; [email protected] MANFRED HONECK TO RETURN TO THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC TO CONDUCT LATE MOZART WORKS REQUIEM (UNFINISHED) With Soprano Joélle Harvey, Mezzo-Soprano Megan Mikailovna Samarin, Tenor Ben Bliss, Bass Matthew Rose, and Westminster Symphonic Choir PIANO CONCERTO NO. 27 with RICHARD GOODE AVE VERUM CORPUS MASONIC FUNERAL MUSIC March 13, 15–16, and 19, 2019 Manfred Honeck will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct a program of late Mozart works. The program will feature the Requiem — performed in its unfinished version (rather than a version completed by a Mozart student or scholar) — with soprano Joélle Harvey, mezzo- soprano Megan Mikailovna Samarin (debut), tenor Ben Bliss, bass Matthew Rose, and the Westminster Symphonic Choir directed by Joe Miller; Piano Concerto No. 27, his final work in that genre, with Richard Goode as soloist; Ave Verum Corpus, with the Westminster Symphonic Choir; and Masonic Funeral Music. The performances will take place Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, March 16 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Manfred Honeck has presented similar programs with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Orchestra, and other ensembles, and his interpretation can be heard in a 2007 recording with the Swedish Radio Orchestra. “When Mozart wrote his Requiem, he already felt that he had died,” Manfred Honeck says. “Mozart was thinking of death at the time.” In its review of Richard Goode’s Nonesuch recording of the Piano Concerto No. 27 with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, released in 2000, The Baltimore Sun wrote: “Goode’s thoughtful consideration of a score invariably yields fresh insights. In the slow movement of Concerto No. 27 (Mozart’s last), he finds the shadows lurking behind the serene melodies and explores them eloquently.” (more) Manfred Honeck / Mozart / 2 The New York Philharmonic will offer an allotment of free tickets to young people ages 13–26 for the concert on Friday, March 15 as part of Philharmonic Free Fridays.
