Presner, Co-Chair Professor Roman Koropeckyj, Co-Chair My dissertation investigates the cinematic representation of forced migration (due to the border changes enacted by the Yalta and Potsdam conferences in 1945) in East Germany, West Germany, and Poland, from 1945–1970. My thesis is that, while the representations of these forced migrations appear infrequently in feature film during this period, they not only exist, but perform an important function in the establishment of foundational national narratives in the audiovisual sphere. Rather than declare the existence of some sort of visual taboo, I determine, firstly, why these images appear infrequently; secondly, how and to what purpose(s) existing representations are mobilized; and, thirdly, their relationship to popular and official discourses. -

Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Ruth von Bernuth Jonathan Boyarin Rudolf Colloredo-Mansfeld James Peacock Michele Rivkin-Fish © 2017 Anna Kushkova ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Anna Kushkova: Navigating the planned economy: Accommodation and survival in Moscow’s post-war ‘Soviet Jewish Pale’ (Under the direction of Michele Rivkin-Fish and Jonathan Boyarin) This dissertation presents an anthropological case study of Jewish engagement in the Soviet “planned economy,” or the “economy of shortage,” in a specific geographic setting of Moscow Jewish suburbs in the first decades after World War II. Due to a range of socio-political, economic and demographic developments Moscow’s suburban settlements with their dense pattern of Jewish residence, unparalleled in Soviet history, turned into what may be called a “Soviet Jewish pale” – a distinctive socio-cultural Jewish environment sustaining a specific configuration of Soviet Jewishness, not fully coinciding with that of the former shtetl, yet different from that characteristic of large urban settings. The study focuses on one particular sphere constitutive of the suburban Jewish collective identity, that is, the economic practices where Jewishness played a vital role in creating channels for obtaining production resources, organizing production and devising distribution strategies. It demonstrates that the prohibition of private entrepreneurship on the part of the socialist state, largely ideological rather than economic in nature, called forth a likewise not purely economic response from below – ethnic mobilization in certain spheres of the formal socialist economy. -

LeBlanc 1 Author’s Foreword The present volume may be viewed as an idiosyncratic sequel to the book, Russkii Berlin [Russian Berlin], which I – along with Olga Raevskaia-Hughes and Robert Hughes – prepared for publication and then published in 1983. It grows directly out of the work that was begun by the three of us at that time (work that I recall with a feeling of ardent gratitude) and is likewise based entirely upon materials on Russian literature and culture that are housed in a single, but extraordinarily valuable, collection – the archive of the Hoover Institution. As was true in that earlier case, this archive consists of materials that outwardly appear to be heterogeneous, materials, furthermore, that relate to what are decidedly divergent stages in the history of Russian culture – the prerevolutionary stage in the first section (the “Gorky” section) and the Soviet stage in the second section. -

In the Privacy of One’s Own Homelessness: The Search for Identity in Twentieth-Century Yiddish Travelogues Yuri Vedenyapin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Yuri Vedenyapin All rights reserved ABSTRACT In the Privacy of One’s Own Homelessness: The Search for Identity in Twentieth-Century Yiddish Travelogues Yuri Vedenyapin This dissertation argues that the richness and distinctiveness of modern Yiddish travel literature—with its emphasis on arriving rather than departing—reflects the complex nature of such notions as home, homelessness, and wandering within East European Jewish culture. It examines the ways in which the experience of travel affected the search for identity, home, and belonging by Yiddish writers from the first secularized and westernized generation of East European Jews. Yiddish travelogues written in the first four decades of the twentieth century show a curious trend with respect to the search for identity and the destinations that are their subject. These destinations fall into two categories: those with specific Jewish connotations and those without. For writers addressing the latter destination category, even though motivated by the search for a Jewish identity, locales beyond the Jewish map engender the greatest sense of empowerment. Even when their ostensible motivations and emphases are diametrically opposed, they arrive at the same conclusion, that Jews belong simultaneously nowhere and everywhere. Peretz Hirschbein and Melech Ravitch are exemplary illustrations of this tendency: the former laments the countless roads on which Jews have traveled and many borders that separate them; he longs for universal brotherhood and closeness to nature, and as such rejects the diversity of the Jewish experience; the latter, on the contrary, celebrates diversity. -

THE REALM OF HADES AND ITS SYMBOLS IN MANDEL'ŠTAM'S TRISTIA: A TRANSPARENT PATH TO REDEMPTION Jesús ÁNGEL y ESPINÓS [email protected] Facultad de Filología A-301 Ciudad Universitaria s/n, 28040 Madrid Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) 1 Abstract In the present paper I shall try to offer an interpretation of the symbols related to Hades' realm in Mandel'štam's Tristia. The importance attached to the adjective "transparent", which turns out to be a clue to deciphering the complex network of allusions contained in the collection of poems, will be especially taken into account. As a result of a detailed research of the mythological and literary sources, it will be shown that Mandel'štam has codified a message of hope in the midst of the apparently gloomy poems of Tristia. Keywords: Osip Mandel'štam – Tristia – Acmeist poetry – Orphism – Vjačeslav Ivanov – Ancient Greek funerary world The references to Hades and to the Greco-Roman netherworld constitute a crucial theme of Mandel'štam's Tristia and feature prominently in some poems of the collection.1 Around this lurid and murky place the Polish-Russian poet constructs an intricate framework of allusions within which to connect the convulsed world of pre- and post-revolutionary Russia with the unanswered questions about the afterlife, in this case about that of the ancient Greeks and, to a lesser extent, the Romans. PETERSBURG: A GATE TO TRANSCENDENCE By way of a preliminary note, some of the poems I shall examine in this paper display fundamentally their afterlife symbolism in the city of Saint Petersburg, which in Tristia has changed its name into Petropolis (Петрополь)2 in the style of Gavrila Deržavin and Aleksandr Puškin. -

In line with the Soviet ethnic policy – Ithe “ordering” of peoples according to the ethno-territorial map drawn up in Moscow – Jews could be recognised as a nation on condition of their collective association with a particular administrative unit. The policy of transformation of the social structure of the USSR, in turn, required that members of the Jewish population should abandon their “socially useless” occupations and become industrial and agricultural (kolkhoz) workers instead. The purpose of building a secular, Yiddish-speaking culture that would be “national in form and socialist in content”1 was to be served by the institutions of the planned Jew- ish autonomous territory. What tipped the decision in favour of this remote geographical location (over fve thousand miles from Moscow) was not only its natural resources but also the need to consolidate the Soviet presence on the eastern outskirts of the state. On 7 May 1934, the Birobidzhan National District (raion) was ofcially declared the Jewish Autonomous Region (oblast). The progress of settlement was slow; severe climate and lacking infrastructure made not only work but also life in the region exceedingly difcult. -
