  • In God We Trust” Originated from a Columbia County President Judge
    “IN GOD WE TRUST” ORIGINATED FROM A COLUMBIA COUNTY PRESIDENT JUDGE By André Dominguez The following excerpt from a 1937 WPA booklet in the Society’s Depression-era Works Progress Administration collection makes some interesting claims: Fifteen judges have filled the office of President Judge in Columbia County since the formation of the county from a part of Northumberland, by Act of Assembly of March 22, 1813. Two of the judges later became state Supreme Court Justices and one became governor of Pennsylvania. One of the judges of the county courts, Judge Ellis Lewis, appointed in 1833, later became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Judge Warren J. Woodward, who served as judge from 1856 to 1861 became a Justice of the Supreme Court and Judge James Pollock, who was appointed in 1851 later became Governor of Pennsylvania. Judge Pollock served in many public offices and was director of the mint at Philadelphia. He was the originator of the motto ‘In God We Trust’ that continues to appear on United States coins. At first glance it would appear that a local Columbia Countian, James Pollock, had become very well accomplished, but I could not recall that the county had produced a governor or that the famous motto had its origins in Columbia County. WPA booklets have a wealth of information, but although usually correct, they rarely include any citations to indicate their sources. The claim that someone associated with Columbia County originated a motto that appears on U.S. currency used by millions of people around the world seemed pretty bold.

This bill would allow drivers the choice of having the official state motto at the bottom of their license plate rather than the county name or state nickname (“Sunshine State”). This optional plate would be a standard plate, not a specialty plate. Drivers would not be required to pay any additional fees, and standard license plate fees would apply. Current Florida law requires the license plate be imprinted with the word "Florida" at the top and the name of the county in which it is sold, or the state nickname, “Sunshine State” at the bottom. EFFECT OF PROPOSED CHANGES: History The Department of State’s Office of Cultural and Historical Programs provides the following history of the Seal of the State of Florida:1 The elements and basic design instructions for Florida's State Seal were established by the Legislature in 1868. Early that year, Florida's newly adopted State Constitution had directed that: "The Legislature shall, at the first session, adopt a seal for the state, and such seal shall be the size of an American silver dollar, but said seal shall not again be changed after its adoption by the Legislature."2 So the Legislature, acting quickly upon the mandate, passed and sent to Governor Harrison Reed a Joint Resolution on August 6, 1868 specifying "That a Seal of the size of the American silver dollar, having in the center thereof a view of the sun's rays over a high land in the distance, a cocoa tree, a steamboat on water, and an Indian female scattering flowers in the foreground, encircled by the words, 'Great Seal of the State of Florida: In God We Trust', be and the same is hereby adopted as the Great Seal of the State of Florida." Some people also consider the "In God We Trust" phrase the State Motto, although there is no official designation of a State Motto in the Florida Statutes.

The bill defines “classroom” as any room in a public school where instruction takes place. “IN GOD WE TRUST” became the national motto of the United States in 1956 by an act of Congress. All United States currency bears the motto. The motto is inscribed directly above and behind the Speaker’s Chair in the United States, House of Representatives Chamber. “IN GOD WE TRUST” is also the state motto of Florida, and it is inscribed on the state seal of Florida. Proponents support this bill as a way to increase patriotism and national unity. Opponents assert that the bill is a mandate on teachers and attempts to interject religion into the classroom. This bills does not appear to have a fiscal impact on state or local governments; however, school districts will be impacted. The Department of Education estimates that the cost to implement this bill is approximately $616,110.

Willard presented his painting, Spirit of ‘76, Iat the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA. The painting depicts three generations of Americans fighting for their new nation’s freedom, one of whom is marching along though slightly wounded in battle. Willard’s powerful portrayal of the strength and determination of the American people in the face of overwhelming odds inspired millions. The painting quickly became one of the most popular patriotic images in American history.     "IN GOD WE TRUST": THE CULTURAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT OF AFFINITY FRAUD IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCH DAVID E. AUSTIN* I. INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEM Across the United States, millions of dollars are being stolen from innocent churchgoers by con artists claiming to share in their religious beliefs. Far from a paranoid conspiracy theory, affinity fraud has posed a significant harm to churches and congregations, specifically those with high percentages of minorities, and the dramatic rise in incidents of affinity fraud over the past several years' has become a major concern for securities regulators at both federal and state levels. In a typical affinity fraud scheme, perpetrators target other members of the same racial, religious or ethnic group by creating an illusion of a shared allegiance or affinity to a common cause or experience. 2 Because the trust implicit among members of a particular religious or ethnic group can be especially strong if the members of that group consider themselves to be socially marginalized, affinity fraud is a particularly effective scam in minority groups with a like the African American documented 3 history of oppression, community. * David E.
