Percussion is an ideal way to teach rhythmic concepts and this low-cost percussion ensemble is a great way to feel the joy of group performance without breaking your budget. July 26, 2013 Bugs Bunny and the NSO come to Wolf Trap By Roger Catlin For a generation of Americans, the earliest love of classical music came not through shared family symphony experiences or early childhood music appreciation classes, but through mayhem-laced TV cartoons, often involving a bunny in drag. Walt Disney may have taken the high road to classical music interpretation through some early Silly Symphony cartoons and “Fantasia” (which in its first run was a flop). But it was Warner Bros. and particularly the animators behind Bugs Bunny who may have been the most successful in drumming key classical passages into the heads of impressionable audiences when the studio’s theatrical cartoons of the 1940s and ’50s were incessantly replayed on TV in the ’60s. Warner Bros. - Still image from the 1950's Merrie Melodies short, “What's Opera, Doc?” Even today, the most serious gray-haired music lover, sitting in the world’s most august concert halls, may be listening to the timeless refrains of Rossini or Wagner only to have the phrase “Kill the Wabbit!” come to mind. Conductor George Daugherty has embraced this meld of classical knowledge and pop-culture conditioning and celebrates it in his “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony.” Its first tour, in 1990, was such a success that it spawned, as most successes in Hollywood do, a sequel. “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II” comes to Wolf Trap on Thursday and Friday, with Daugherty conducting the National Symphony Orchestra. In its honor, we pause to hail the greatest uses of classical music by Warner Bros. -

Bert Hogenkamp Universiteit Utrecht Faculteit Letteren Theater-, Film- en Televisiewetenschap Specialisatie Film- en Televisiewetenschap VOORWOORD Deze doctoraalscriptie is geschreven in het kader van de specialisatie Film- en Televisiewetenschap van de studie Theater-, Film- en Televisiewetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Het heeft meer dan een jaar geduurd voordat ik dit onderzoek voltooid heb, maar hier is dan de kroon op mijn studie. Sinds de middelbare school was ik al geïnteresseerd in de propaganda in tekenfilms. Ik heb toen een documentaire gezien, getiteld Ducktators, en was gefascineerd door deze propaganda. Ik was verbaasd dat een vriendelijk medium als de tekenfilm werd ingezet voor propagandadoeleinden. Tijdens mijn studie is het idee om hier iets mee te doen altijd aanwezig geweest. Hier kwam het echter nooit van tot het moment dat ik een onderwerp voor mijn doctoraalscriptie moest bedenken. Propaganda is in mijn opinie nog steeds een zeer relevant onderwerp. Wereldmachten proberen nog steeds zoveel mogelijk mensen aan hun zijde te krijgen en zij maken hiervoor gretig gebruik van de media. Door het bestuderen van een historisch onderwerp wil ik een open kijk op dit fenomeen bieden. De historie kan, doordat het een afgesloten periode betreft, van enige afstand bekeken worden. Door een heldere kijk op het verleden kan vervolgens het heden kritischer bekeken worden. Deze scriptie heeft heel wat voeten in de aarde gehad en voor de hulp hierbij wil ik een aantal mensen bedanken. Mijn dank gaat in eerste instantie uit naar Bert Hogenkamp, die mij geduldig heeft geholpen bij de specificatie van mijn onderwerp en de verdere begeleiding gedurende de hele scriptie. -

PRESS RELEASE For immediate release Erie Philharmonic brings Warner Brother’s cartoons back to the Warner Theatre Erie, PA | February 7, 2018 This weekend the Erie Philharmonic brings Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II to the Warner Theatre stage. The theater, originally built by the Warner Brothers—Jack, Harry, and their siblings—is one of the last original Warner Theatres left standing in America. The concert will take audiences back decades ago to when the Warner was a movie palace. Audiences will have the exclusive opportunity to see 16 classic LOONY TUNES projected on the big screen while the Erie Philharmonic performs the soundtracks live. There will be a performance on Saturday February 10 at 8:00pm and a matinee on Sunday February 11 at 2:30pm. George Daugherty will conduct the orchestra in classics such as What’s Opera, Doc?, The Rabbit of Seville, Baton Bunny, Rhapsody Rabbit, Zoom and Bored, and many more. Creators George Daugherty and David Ka Lik Wong bring Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, and the rest of the gang to Erie for two already-packed performances. Saturday’s concert is SOLD OUT, but there are still limited tickets available for the Sunday matinee. Tickets for both concerts are expected to be released throughout the week as well as returned at the door the night of the performance so guests are encouraged to check the website or call the box office to see if seats are available. ALEUTIAN WORLD WAR II STORIES INTRODUCTION Beginning in 2006, the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area has produced calendars with each month focused on an illustrated history related to the program’s interpretive themes. The calendars have had broad nationwide appeal and were provided to veterans’ groups and homes, historical societies, schools, libraries and members of the public with a personal connection or interest in World War II in the Aleutians. Each year the calendars interwove and built upon the two main themes of the national historic area: the Aleutian military campaign and the Unanga{ (Aleut) experience of World War II. The calendar stories also refected the program’s focus on the natural environment as well as historic preservation, both in reference to Unanga{ culture and history and to the military campaign. The calendars also explored previously unknown sides of the World War II Aleutian experience, including primary research on the personal histories of soldiers and civilians in the Aleutian Islands.
