MLS as a Sports Product – the Prominence of the World’s Game in the U.S. April 8, 2021 Abstract The purpose of this Working Paper is to analyze how soccer at the professional level in the U.S., with Major League Soccer as a focal point, has developed over the span of a quarter of a century. It is worthwhile to examine the growth of MLS from its first game in 1996 to where the league currently stands as a business as it moves past its 25th anniversary. The 1994 World Cup (held in the U.S.) and the subsequent implementation of MLS as a U.S. professional league exerted a major positive influence on soccer participation and fandom in the U.S. Consequently, more importance was placed on soccer in the country’s culture. The research reported here explores the league’s evolution and development through the cohesion existing between its sporting and business development, as well as its performance.

  • Onside: a Reconsideration of Soccer's Cultural Future in the United States
1 ONSIDE: A RECONSIDERATION OF SOCCER’S CULTURAL FUTURE IN THE UNITED STATES Samuel R. Dockery TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 8, 2020 ___________________________________________ Matthew T. Bowers, Ph.D. Department of Kinesiology Supervising Professor ___________________________________________ Elizabeth L. Keating, Ph.D. Department of Anthropology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Samuel Reed Dockery Title: Onside: A Reconsideration of Soccer’s Cultural Future in the United States Supervising Professors: Matthew T. Bowers, Ph.D. Department of Kinesiology Elizabeth L. Keating, Ph.D. Department of Anthropology Throughout the course of the 20th century, professional sports have evolved to become a predominant aspect of many societies’ popular cultures. Though sports and related physical activities had existed long before 1900, the advent of industrial economies, specifically growing middle classes and ever-improving methods of communication in countries worldwide, have allowed sports to be played and followed by more people than ever before. As a result, certain games have captured the hearts and minds of so many people in such a way that a culture of following the particular sport has begun to be emphasized over the act of actually doing or performing the sport. One needs to look no further than the hours of football talk shows scheduled weekly on ESPN or the myriad of analytical articles published online and in newspapers daily for evidence of how following and talking about sports has taken on cultural priority over actually playing the sport. Defined as “hegemonic sports cultures” by University of Michigan sociologists Andrei Markovits and Steven Hellerman, these sports are the ones who dominate “a country’s emotional attachments rather than merely representing its callisthenic activities.” Soccer is the world’s game.

Those hardy riders amongst us are now probably fed up with the wet and cold, not to mention the amount of layers we have to dress ourselves in before stepping outside…..I know I am! Equally for those of you who prefer to spend the winter months sitting on a turbo trainer, finding it mind-bendingly dull and knowing that you’ll never make the whole hour as you run out of things to think about after around five minutes, spring can’t come fast enough. A fairly mixed edition this quarter, a few event round-ups, messages from the Club’s Chairman and President and a report of what sounds like a great trip to Belgium by the Knight twins. I also bring you the sad news that Fred Towers, a club stalwart, sadly lost his battle with cancer at Christmas. I never got to meet Fred but I do know he was a great club member and I think he would appreciate the front cover picture of William Ryan and his father Gerard showing the club who for what it is, a big supportive family, RIP Fred.

  • USMNT Rumors: Bruce Arena Takes Over As Head Coach
USMNT Rumors: Bruce Arena takes over as head coach Author : Robert D. Cobb The United States Soccer Federation made a major decision on Monday with the firing of manager and technical director Jurgen Klinsmann. The move follows a disastrous start to the final round of 2018 World Cup qualifying, with losses to Mexico and Costa Rica that have the Stars and Stripes at the bottom of the Hexagonal Round standings. Problems within Klinsmann’s reign went beyond simply the two recent defeats and the change was brewing over the past few years. According to multiple reports including Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, Bruce Arena will be the next USMNT manager. His return as USMNT manager would bring the current LA Galaxy manager to familiar ground. A member of the US Soccer Hall of Fame, Arena brings vast experience and one of the most successful resumes in the domestic game. https://twitter.com/GrantWahl/status/800807812469321732 It will be interesting to see what US Soccer says in its press conference later on Tuesday about these rumors. Will he take over on an interim basis while US Soccer considers full-time candidates, or is he the guy through World Cup 2018? There are several positives to Bruce Arena being back with the Yanks once more no matter the duration. 4-4-2 One of Klinsmann’s most frustrating tendencies was to tinker and experiment with the US lineup too often. Without even taking into account roster choices, the formation and approach were a constant guessing game. Klinsmann’s decision to utilize a 3-5-2 in the recent qualifier against Mexico ultimately undermined the team’s performance.
