Council for European Studies 21st International Conference of Europeanists Resurrections Washington, D.C. • March 14-16, 2014 Program Institute for German Studies The Institute for German Studies (IGS) at the University of Birmingham in England is part of a worldwide network of centres for German and European Studies linked with the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). Our research is cross-disciplinary and encompasses the culture, history, politics and economics of Germany in its European context. The IGS is an internationally recognized centre of expertise on contemporary Germany, which supports doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, bringing them together with experienced scholars and leading international thinkers on Germany and Europe. Alongside its flourishing programme of research seminars and conferences, the IGS is currently the hub of a high-profile academic network, supported by the DAAD: Weltanschauungen / Worldviews: The German Past and the Contemporary World – The Domestic and Foreign Politics of Memory. This two-year project brings together an interdisciplinary group of eminent scholars from around the world to consider the continuing impact of 20th-century German history, particularly the legacies of fascist and communist dictatorships, on 21st-century political decision-making. To find out more about the IGS and about how to join us as a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher, please visit our website www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/institute-german-studies/ index.aspx or contact the Director of theM IGS,as Drt Nicker Martin of A ([email protected] in Ger).man and MasterE uofr oApretasn i nS tGuedrimesa n and MasterE oufr oApretasn i nS tGuedrimesa n and MMaassteterEr uo ofr foA pArertastns i niSn tG uGederirmemsa ann a anndd EEuurrooppeeaann S Stutuddieiess JOIN A TOP GRADUATE PROGRAM AT THE EDMUND JOIN A TOP A. Call for Papers Twenty-Second International Conference of Europeanists Paris, France • July 8-10, 2015 Organized by the Council for European Studies (CES) and hosted by Sciences Po, Paris Contradictions: Envisioning European Futures In many historical moments Europe’s futures have seemed not simply open and uncertain, but also replete with contradiction. In the contemporary juncture, the responses both of ordinary Europeans and of the continent’s collective actors and institutions to the challenges posed by crisis again constitute a series of contradictions—some of which reiterate large questions from Europe’s past, while also imping- ing upon the ability of social forces to imagine possible futures. Europe is today a space within which the principle of social solidarity appears firmly rooted, yet also one in which the politics of austerity threaten to erode welfare state commitments. It is a context in which supra-national institutions and transnational social connections have progressed far, but also the scene of substantial efforts to reassert nationalism. It is a setting in which many are disenchanted with mainstream politics, yet also challenged by the possible growth of new movements. These – and other – tensions and contradictions manifest themselves in indi- vidual lives, social relations, institutions and collective projects. And we would like the 22nd International Conference of Europeanists to examine such opposing tendencies and, facing forward, consider the many potential futures emerging from the European crisis. Thus, for its 2015 conference, the Council for European Studies (CES) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, book discussions and individual papers on the study of Europe, broadly defined. We encourage proposals in the widest range of disciplines, and, in particular, proposals that combine disci- plines, nationalities, and generations. Although it is not mandatory that papers be related to the confer- ence theme, papers that do so are especially welcome. We strongly encourage participants to submit their proposals as part of an organized panel. Full panel proposals will be given top priority in the selection process. Participants may find it useful to con- nect with like-minded scholars through the growing number of CES research networks, links to which can be found here: http://councilforeuropeanstudies.org/research/research-networks Proposals may be submitted from August 18 to October 10, 2014. Participants will be notified of the Committee’s decision by December 18, 2014. Information on how to submit proposals will be posted on the CES website and disseminated through its newsletter.
