    A short history of Findon and the racehorse 1 At the start of the 19C race meetings were held on the downland gallops below Blackpatch Hill at the western edge of Findon parish, the course being known as Michel Grove (an estate mainly in the neighbouring Clapham and Patching parishes). Later in the century race meetings were held on the gallops below West Hill at the south west end of Findon parish. In the 19C horse racing featured much more in ordinary rural life than it does today, as the horse was still vital to agricultural activities and local transport. Knowledge of race horses in training was wide and racing was keenly followed as a sport and an opportunity for social gatherings, Race meetings were also being held on the downs at Lewes at this time and on the downs at Goodwood and Brighton in Sussex which still hold meetings today, like Epsom, Ascot, Sandown and Lingfield in Surrey. Fontwell and Plumpton in Sussex still hold regular national hunt race meetings over hurdles and fences while the race meetings at Newbury in Berkshire and Cheltenham attract the highest quality national hunt horses. Around 1853-1854 Henry Padwick, a well known member of the Danebury ‘Confederacy’, a very successful group of individuals that sent out many ‘Classic’ winners from the racing stables at Danebury, near Stockbridge racecourse in Hampshire, built new brick and flint stables and a trainer’s house, at the top of Stable Lane, Findon on the site of a cottage and outbuildings which appear on the 1839 Tithe Map.

On Saturday 8th April when this year’s field goes to post at Aintree, people all over the planet will be tuning in to enjoy the spectacle on television…. The race is unique. A field of 40-horses slug it out over 30 fences and a four-and-a-half mile-trip. The names of the fences resonate like characters out of some old story enjoyed as a child. Bechers, Canal Turn, Valentines Brook, the Chair…. The Grand National fences are idiosyncratic. Much-different to ordinary park racecourse fences and instantly recognisable. They have lost some of the terror of yesteryear – but they still present the ultimate test of both horse and jockey. There is no race quite like the Grand National. The horse that wins must possess a bit of everything. A bit of speed, the ability to jump, bravery, the capacity to remain calm under pressure and, at the death, he must possess stamina – and plenty of it. After jumping massive fences for 4-miles at speed, the winner must dig deep and find the reserves to get up the straight, past the elbow and over the line with the rest still toiling behind him.

    Duchess Park Bee Orchid on Duchess Park History and Natural History Volume 1 - An Introduction (A work in progress at June 2017) David Cudby Duchess Park History and Natural History – Volume 1 This book is dedicated to all residents and visitors to Duchess Park, present and future, who have an interest in local history, or who are, or might be persuaded to become interested in understanding, loving and conserving the site and its flora and fauna. The views are my own. Why does including local history in this book matter? It matters for two major reasons. First because many people derive a great deal of pleasure from reading about past events and enjoy the perspective that it gives in understanding local custom and practice, previous land ownership and land use. Secondly, for many of us, myself included, knowing something about where our little patch of land fits into previous land ownership and who lived here and used that land gives a sense of place and helps in feeling grounded or at home where we live. It is only by having this sense of place that we can feel the emotion that will motivate us to protect and conserve what we have inherited. Why does conservation matter?
