Reasoned Creativity, or Creative Reasoning Keith Holyoak Distinguished Professor of Psychology CURRENT RESEARCH AFFILIATION Unleashing creative potential by understanding the University of California, Los Angeles human mind and brain EDUCATION We have too often been compartmentalized into two categories: either we are a “math Ph.D. in Psychology 1976, Stanford University person,” or we are the “creative one.” Somehow a gulf has been created between our critical B.A. in Psychology 1971, University of British Columbia thinking and our creative thinking, a line between left brain and right brain. Dr. Keith Holyoak, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, takes an interdisciplinary approach to study human intelligence, and how creativity connects with AWARDS math and science. New York: Oxford University Press, 2001. 1 Introduction This paper describes a computer program, called Copycat, that models how people make analogies. It might seem odd to include such a topic in a collection of papers mostly on the immune system. However, the immune system is one of many systems in nature in which a very large collection of relatively simple agents, operating with no central control and limited communication among themselves, collectively produce highly complex, coordinated, and adaptive behavior. Other such systems include the brain, colonies of social insects, economies, and ecologies. The general study of how such emergent adaptive behavior comes about has been called the study of \complex adaptive systems". The Copycat program is meant to model human cognition, and its major contribution is to show how a central aspect of cognition can be modeled as the kind of decentralized, distributed complex system described above. In doing so it proposes principles that I believe are common to all complex adaptive systems, and that are particularly relevant to the study of immunology. Copycat was developed by Douglas Hofstadter and myself, and has been described pre- viously in [3, 9, 10, 15, 16]. [email protected] Abstract: Conceptual abstraction and analogy-making are key abilities underlying humans' abili- ties to learn, reason, and robustly adapt their knowledge to new domains. Despite of a long history of research on constructing AI systems with these abilities, no current AI system is anywhere close to a capability of forming humanlike abstractions or analogies. This paper reviews the advantages and limitations of several approaches toward this goal, including symbolic methods, deep learning, and probabilistic program induction. The paper concludes with several proposals for designing challenge tasks and evaluation measures in order to make quantifiable and generalizable progress in this area. While AI has made dramatic progress over the last decade in areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics, current AI systems almost entirely lack the ability to form humanlike concepts and abstractions. For example, while today's computer vision systems can recognize perceptual categories of objects, such as labeling a photo of the Golden Gate as \a bridge," these systems lack the rich conceptual knowledge humans have about these objects|knowledge that enables robust recognition of such objects in a huge variety of contexts. -

Consider the chess game: When faced with a complex scenario, how does understanding arise in one’s mind? How does one integrate disparate cues into a global, meaningful whole? How do players avoid the combinatorial explosion? How are abstract ideas represented? The purpose of this paper is to propose a new computational model of human chess cognition. We suggest that analogies and abstract roles are crucial to understanding a chess scenario. We present a proof-of-concept model, in the form of a computational architecture, which may be able to account for many crucial aspects of human play, such as (i) concentration of attention to relevant aspects, (ii) how humans may avoid the combinatorial explosion, (iii) perception of similarity at a strategic level, (iv) a state of meaningful anticipation over how a global scenario may evolve, and (v) the architecture’s choice as an emergent phenomenon from the actions of subcognitive processes.
