Divine Service Sunday – 8:15 & 10:45 AM

JANUARY 26, 2020 THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

WELCOME TO PEACE! – The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT’S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to “T.” BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, You sent Your Son to proclaim Your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of Your Spirit that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION Rite 2, p. 60

OPENING HYMN #202 “THOU, WHOSE ALMIGHTY WORD” THE INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son  and of the Holy Spirit.

THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord;

3

P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O Most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us; have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only- begotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. C: Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen. THE KYRIE ELEISON (LORD, HAVE MERCY)

THE HYMN #6:1 “ALLELUIA! LET PRAISES RING”

4

THE SALUTATION

THE COLLECT P: Let us pray…one God, now and forever.

THE LESSON – ISAIAH 9:1-4 1Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for the land that was in anguish. In former times, he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will cause it to be glorious, along the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. 2The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. For those living in the land of the shadow of death, the light has dawned. 3You have multiplied the nation. You have increased its joy. They rejoice before you like the joy at harvest time, like the celebration when people divide the plunder. 4For you have shattered the yoke that burdened them. You have broken the bar on their shoulders and the rod of their oppressor, as you did in the day of Midian.

5

THE VERSE OF THE DAY P: Alleluia. Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching, preaching, and healing every disease. Alleluia. (Matthew 4:23 cf. EHV)

THE ALLELUIA

THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the Third Sunday after the Epiphany is written in the 4th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the 12th verse.

THE GOSPEL – MATTHEW 4:12-23 12When Jesus heard that John was put in prison, he withdrew into Galilee. 13He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14He did this to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 15Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, 16the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light,

6

and on those dwelling in the region and the shadow of death a light has dawned. 17From that time, Jesus began to preach: “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven is near.” 18As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen. 19He said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20They immediately left their nets and followed him. 21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Jesus called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. 23Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father,

7

By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life  of the world to come. Amen.

THE CHIEF HYMN #486 “THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION”

THE SERMON – 1 CORINTHIANS 1:10-17 JOINED TOGETHER IN CHRIST 10Brothers, I am making an appeal to you using the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I ask that you all express the same view and not have any divisions among you, but that you be joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11For the news I heard about you, my brothers, from members of Chloe’s household, is that there are rivalries among you. 12What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” 13Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul? 14I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one can say that I baptized you into my own name. 16(I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides them, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel—not with the wisdom used in speeches, so that the cross of Christ would not be emptied of its power.

13

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: “Take, eat; this is My  body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: “Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My  blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
