Animal Welfare Club This club was established at Chatham High School in 2007 and has donated considerable funding to furnish a safe and comfortable place for stray, abused, or injured animals that are taken in by the Animal Control Officer. The club has also paid for all animal medical needs including spaying/neutering, immunizations and some microchipping before they are adopted into loving homes. Along with helping local animals in Chatham and Harwich, we have donated thousands of dollars over the past seven years to other nearby animal causes and rescues such as: International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), New England Society for Abandoned Animals (NESAA), Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL), A Helping Paw (of Wareham, MA) Wild Care, Cape Wildlife Center, and many others! In 2012, our club was presented a prestigious Animal Action Award by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Club members were presented this award at IFAW headquarters in South Yarmouth, MA at a reception given by IFAW administrators and special donors. Awards were presented to each individual club member by Siobhan Magnus, American Idol star who is also a local animal advocate! This club meets on Wednesday or Thursday after school about 3-4 times per month. Last Spring, at the MRHS Health Fair, the club had a table explaining many types of Animal Therapy, and a visit from a pony, “Pickles”, a service dog, “Lady” and a puppy, “Mia”! In June, the club went on a tour to a wild care center that is funded by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). 2. Archery Club Monomoy Archery Club: Calling Katniss and Hawkeye! Have you done archery before and want to improve your skills? Have you seen it in the movies and always wanted to try? The Monomoy Archery Club is an officially sanctioned club through USA Archery, the Olympic governing body for the sport. Members will be instructed by Mr. Gifford, a Level 2 certified Archery Coach. Beginners will learn the basics of archery safety, proper form, and shooting technique. More advanced archers will hone their skills with the goal of entering competitions at the local, state, or national level. Come try this fun sport, or bring your skills to a higher level! We will meet after school (weather permitting) once a week through the fall and again in the spring. 3. Art Club The goal of Art Club is to support advanced art students and to provide a place for beginning students to connect with the visual arts. This becomes especially valuable when students do not have an art class. Art Club provides an opportunity for students to connect with contests and exhibits they want to participate in, learn new methods and techniques, and become aware of the creative programs available to them. In the past, we have assisted with the designing and creation of drama sets, and more recently, we have been successful in raising money for a variety of worthwhile causes like Soup Bowls for Hunger, UNICEF, Water.org, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Art Therapy program. We paint murals, illustrate field guides, create calendars, and participate in a variety of student exhibits such as the Cape Cod Art Association, Scholastic Art, and the Congressional Art exhibits. Art Club has also provided students with an opportunity to work after school to develop their painting, photography and wheel throwing skills. Last year and again this year we worked collaboratively with Sandscript members to create a Halloween story which was read to elementary school children. Art Club provides the opportunity to collaborate, communicate and support each other. We welcome everyone and look forward to having a great year at MRHS! Please join us!! 4. Art of War Club The “Art of War” Club meets on Friday afternoons to watch age-appropriate war movies covering a range of historical periods. Past choices included “Waterloo” with Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer and “Lawrence of Arabia” with Peter O’Toole. The group then discusses both the historical content and the film qualities of the selections. Participation is open to all grade levels. 5. Best Buddies Club The Best Buddies Club is dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for friendship, activities, respect, inclusion, and having fun. Students with intellectual disabilities are often socially isolated from mainstream students and benefit from positive peer relationships giving them higher self-esteem, greater self-confidence, and stronger communication skills. High school students in the Best Buddies Club are given an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life and their own. Best Buddies model acceptance, respect and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities in both their school and their community. The Best Buddies Club hosts a huge Special Olympics event each October, three Best Buddies dances each year, Spread the Word to End the Word event each March, attend the Best Buddies Prom in Boston and the Hyannis Port Challenge at Craigville Beach. The Club members also take part in after school activities such as bowling, super bowl parties or going out to dinner. Best Buddies creates opportunities to make a difference in someone else’s life and your own. “To the world you may be one person but to one person you may mean the world.” 6. Fishing Club The Monomoy Regional High School Fishing Club meets every other Thursday after school throughout the year. Most of our excursions take place on the weekends or for about an hour after school in great weather. The club is open to all students who are interested in fishing no matter his/her level of experience. We fish year-round for fresh and saltwater species all over the Cape. Last spring, the club held our first friendly fishing tournament at the end of May for Monomoy families. For our beginners, we have gear if you need it. Dues are $25/year to cover the cost of insurance. 7. Fitness Room The MRHS Fitness Room is open to any student at the high school with an interest in working out, learning about fitness and improving their wellness. The Fitness Room is open from 2:30- 4:00, Monday through Friday. The Fitness Room is a great place to learn about the equipment, free-weight training and how to improve and maintain your wellness for the present and future. In season and out of season athletes are always welcome as well! 8. French Club Our MRHS French club is a student-run enrichment club. Each year students set the agenda depending on their interests. For example, French cooking, or games, or conversational French, or French film. All students are welcome to join! 9. Gay Straight Alliance Monomoy's Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) is a welcoming safe environment for all students. The club does not ask for anyone to identify their sexuality. We go on fun trips, do fundraisers and always have food! Our main focus is providing a safe, close-knit group where students can go for support. We engage in open discussions about discrimination, LGBTQ rights and tolerance. Last year, the club ran the first ever Open Mic Enrichment. GSA constantly works to make Monomoy a safe, LGBTQ inclusive community! 10. Handbell Choir The Handbell Choir provides an opportunity for musicians of every level, from beginners to experts, to learn music and perform for a variety of audiences. The choir meets weekly to work on selected pieces to perform seasonally. This year we will meet from 7:15-8AM on Tuesdays so that students will not have conflicts with sports or other clubs should they wish to participate in multiple activities. We perform at a variety of venues including Heritage Museums and Gardens, local nursing homes, and even Faneuil Hall in Boston. If you are interested in developing musicianship, working on ensemble skills, and trying out a unique instrument please join us! 11. Human Rights Academy This club is sponsored by the Barnstable Human Rights Commission. We meet twice a month and travel to the Human Rights Cape and Islands meetings twice a year. The goal of the Human Rights Academy is to educate students about the local and global issues surrounding Human Rights Issues. Each year, we select one or more human rights that we would like to focus on and create a school-wide project. At the end of the year, we present the project to the Barnstable Human Rights Commission. 12. Interact Club This is a service club where members do three things: 1. Plan and work together on projects to help other people (visit senior citizens, collect donations for underprivileged kids, help out at the Family Pantry etc.) 2. Meet and talk about positive things – have fun 3. Raise money for our activities We meet most Fridays at 2:30 and during school when we can. The club is a youth version of, and is sponsored by, the Rotary Club of Chatham/Harwich.
