  • Impact of Pesticide Use on Health in Developing Countries
Impact of pesticide use on health in developing countries Proceedings of a symposium held in Ottawa, Canada, 1 7-20 September 1990 IDRC CRDI International Development Research Centre Centre de recherches pour le devetoppement international 1 March 1993 Dear Reader/Librarian, IDRC is a public corporation created by the Canadian parliament in 1970 to help developing countries find viable solutions to their problems through research. At the 1992 Earth Summit, IDRC's mandate was broadened to emphasize sustainable development issues. As part of IDRC's strengthened commitment to global action and harüony, we are pleased to send you a complimentary copy of our most recent publication: The impact of pesticide use on health in developing countries (March 1993, 352 pages, 0-88936-560-1, $17.95). The first part of this book presents a brief survey of the global situation and the results of twelve epidemiological studies carried out by researchers from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. These focus on poisonings resulting from organophosphates, herbicides, and pyrethroids. The second part illustrates the role of the process of development, production, spraying techniques and legislation in protecting the health of workers. A discussion of the benefits and modalities of access to pertinent information for the prevention of pesticide poisonings is provided in the third section. Finally, in the fourth section, consideration is given to the advantages and disadvantages of certain alternatives to the use of synthetic pesticides in agriculture and public health, such as botanical pesticides and integrated pest management strategies. We hope this book is a valuable addition to your collection.

Their development is a joint activity of all ACAC members, who represent the leaf production, processing and manufacturing sectors of the Tobacco Industry. The concept of GRLs and their implementation are described in this guide. • GRLs provide guidance to tobacco growers and assist with interpretation and evaluation of results from analyses of residues of Crop Protection Agents (CPAs*).

  • Catalyst 2016 Edition II
Island Cat Resources and Adoption / icraeastbay.org The ICRA Catal st 2016 Edition II zuli teddy penny Please Consider Volunteering No Effort is Too Small Imagine the scene. Twenty-five cats in traps lined up in a warehouse awaiting transport to a mass spay/neuter clinic. If that’s not a difficult scene to fathom, then it will surely shock you that all 25 cats came from the same yard in Oakland in April 2016 through a collective and collaborative trapping effort by ICRA and Feral Change volunteers. All were spayed and neutered in an attempt to quickly and effectively slow the population growth in one neighborhood thanks to the San Francisco SPCA’s Community Cats Spay/Neuter program via a grant. The project was ongoing as of early-June. Although these 25 community cats are now fixed, we are caring for nine new-born kittens pulled from the same yard that weekend. These kittens will be in foster care until they are old enough to spay/neuter and then be placed into adoptive homes. Many hours of labor and love have gone into this project already! Zack, Zuli, Teddy, and Penny are just a few of the nine kittens who are very happy that we made the effort on their behalf. So too are their moms, dads, and cousins who will live a better life not producing litter after litter! Projects this dramatically large are uncommon, but volunteering with ICRA almost always involves some combination of trapping, transport, outreach to neighbors to educate them about community cat management, coordination with collaborative partners, including spay/neuter clinics, fostering and adoption.

  • Lethal and Sublethal Effects of Ten Insecticides, Used in Date Palm
Hellenic Plant Protection Journal 11: 62-70, 2018 DOI 10.2478/hppj-2018-0009 Lethal and sublethal eff ects of ten insecticides, used in date palm production in Saudi Arabia, on the parasitoid Trichogramma cacoeciae M. Jamal Hajjar* and M. Al-Masoud Summary Lethal and sublethal eff ects of ten insecticides commonly used in date palm production in Saudi Arabia were assessed in the laboratory against adults of Trichogramma cacoeciae, an impor- tant egg parasitoid of the dried fruit moth Ephestia calidella. Bioassays were conducted according to the standard protocol of the International Organization for Biological Control IOBC/WPRS/Working Group ‘Pesticides and Benefi cial Organisms’. Our results showed that cypermethrin, deltamethrin, mal- athion, phenthoate, methomyl, and carbosulfan were moderately harmful (IOBC Class 3) to the par- asitoid. The botanical insecticides azadirachtin and matrine were moderately harmful (IOBC Class 3) and slightly harmful (IOBC Class 2), respectively. The insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen was slight- ly harmful, whereas bistrifl uron was harmless (IOBC Class 1). Regarding sublethal eff ects, the parasit- ism ratios compared to control were reduced by pyriproxyfen and azadirachtin to 49.0% and 58.0%, re- spectively; hence they are classifi ed as slightly harmful insecticides (IOBC Class 2). Bistrifl uron and ma- trine were harmless (IOBC Class 1) as parasitism ratios were reduced by 9.2% and 27.6%, respective- ly. Longevity of adults exposed to bistrifl uron and matrine (3.6 and 3.3 days, respectively) and to py- riproxyfen and azadirachtin (1.7 and 1.3 days, respectively) was signifi cantly lower than that in con- trol (4.67 days).

DESTRUCTION AND DECONTAMINATION TECHNOLOGIES FRO PCBs AND OTHER POPs WASTES UNDER THE BASEL CONVENTION A Training Manual for Hazardous Waste Project Managers Volume C - Annexes Secretariat of the Basel Convention Autoclaving Name of Process: Autoclaving Status: Autoclaving is a technology that has been around for many years now and is Applicable POPs wastes: well proven. In general for PCBs, only the oil and transformer components such PCB’s and not for other POPs as ceramics, cardboard and wood are incinerated. After decontamination, the various metals such as copper, steel and aluminium are sent to the metals recycling industry. In fact, the autoclaving cannot be compared with the other technologies dealt with, as it does not treat the PCB itself, but its objective is the clean-up and re- use of the with PCB contaminated materials, which is a completely different purpose as the other technologies. One has to consider that 98% of the contaminated oil is not going into the autoclaving but directly to the incinerator! Technology description: Autoclaving is a solvent decontamination process that extracts PCBs from contaminated material. The process is most often used in projects in conjunction with high temperature incineration. For capacitors the process involves shredding and placing all the material into the autoclaving chamber and by vacuum extraction with solvent remove the PCB. The condensers solid materials, after sawing and decontamination, are totally treated in the incineration plant through the solid burden way, and only the ceramics can then be landfilled. The extracted oil and PCBs is sent for HTI incineration, Alkali metal reduction or other alternative technologies.
