Moon Knight Epic Collection: Shadows of the Moon 30, Nelson rated it really liked it Shelves: marvel-comics. Great collection of stories. This Epic Collection collects the bulk of the Moench run, the previous having collected only the first 4 issues, and the third and final Epic Collection collecting the final batch. The stories in this collection are very strong for the most part, having only a few arcs I didn't care much for. Here we get the first appearances of Stained Glass Scarlet and Morpheus, as well as the return of many other Moon Knight villains that would become iconic in time. I must admit Great collection of stories. I must admit that I struggle to get through a lot of 80s comics, but this still reads very well and holds up strongly. Luckily, Moench doesn't rely on repetitive exposition or narrating what we can see is happening in the panel like a lot of books of the time. And Sienkiewicz's art is beautiful, moody, and kinetic. Really such a good run, and I can't wait to read the rest. May 28, Edward Davies rated it Moon Knight Epic Collection: Shadows of the Moon liked it. I enjoyed reading this as it's new territory for me for a change. The stories were weird, but also fun. Aug 07, Alex rated it it was amazing. Sienkiewicz's Moon Knight Epic Collection: Shadows of the Moon is truly a marvel, no pun intended. Moench does a nice job of giving MK a unique and layered story, pushing back against the preconception that Moon Knight is just Marvel's version of Batman. Though some of the broad strokes are similar - butler, wealthy man masquerading by night as a vigilante to avenge a past trauma - the two characters are very different. Moench creates a diverse and memorable supporting cast and does a nice job trying to build a menacing Rogues Gallery for the hero. Though his main love interest, Marlene, seems a bit one-note and too damsel-in-distressy, she has moments of strength and comes into her own toward the end. If you're a fan of Batman, particularly the work of Dennis O'Neil or Frank Miller's iconic take on Daredevil, this run is Moon Knight Epic Collection: Shadows of the Moon contemporary book that ranks along with them. Great stuff. Jun 10, Jamie Manley rated it really liked it. Not quite as good as vol 1 Moon Knight Epic Collection: Shadows of the Moon I do love the issues with Morpheus and stained glass scarlet. Moon Knight has multiple personalities, a history as a mercenary that brought him tremendous wealth, Jewish roots, and a superhero origin story that is rooted in ancient Egyptian mysticism. And that costume! I love his look and I like his character traits. But it took until the mid 00's when authors like Warren Ellis and Jeff Lemire were able to and allowed to explore MK's full creative potential. The stories are pretty good overall, some are great. They're just a bit dated. Bill Sienkiewicz' art, who pencils and inks the majority of the issues, is definitely a standout feature of this collection. As publishers struggle, it seems like more and more they are turning to graphic novels as new revenue streams, to diversify existing properties, or as ways to repackage old content. With the deluge of titles coming at us, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a librarian who isn’t deeply invested in their GN collection or tuned into the world of comics publishing to discern the excellent titles from the merely popular, and the quality from the... well, crap. And oh there’s a lot of crap out there these days... But there’s a whole lot of great stuff, too. Comics are a wonderful and unique medium, which allow any kind of story or instruction to be delivered in a way that is fun, engaging, and accessible. Just like other storytelling forms, the content can be simple and amusing, or it can be deep and challenging. It’s no surprise that comics are seeing such a jump in popularity and acceptance now.

    UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Comics to Film (and Back Again): A Study in Stylistic Remediation from 1978-2009 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Drew Anthony Morton 2012 © Copyright by Drew Anthony Morton 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Comics to Film (and Back Again): A Study in Stylistic Remediation from 1978-2009 by Drew Anthony Morton Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor John Caldwell, Co-Chair Professor Denise Mann, Co-Chair In this dissertation, I will examine the formal interchange between American film and American comic books from 1978-2009. Building upon the theory of remediation defined by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin, I describe a contemporary facet of the relationship between these two media forms as exemplifying stylistic remediation, or the representation of one medium’s stylistic characteristics within another medium. Through the following chapters, I will investigate the complex and ever evolving formal relationship between these two media forms, which are also experiencing convergence at the levels of the industries which produce them and the customers who consume them. Moreover, I will also offer commentary upon the potential economic future of stylistic remediation and what new hybrid forms of media these trends in form and conglomeration have begun to produce. To this end, this study applies ii theories of form out of Comic Studies, Film Studies, and New Media Studies to analyses of texts in both media. Moreover, in order to fully contextualize these stylistic developments, I will draw upon an analysis of the industrial and popular presses representing both industries that I will elaborate upon with subject interviews.
