. HERPES by Kevin Fredrich "Let's Go," the album, was my first musical soul mate. "Never fell in love 'till I feel in love with you, never known what a good time was 'till I had a 3 n VACCINE good time with you." —• Thus opens Rancid's classic punk ballad "Radio," a song dedicated to the mighty East Bay punk scene of the early 90's. I'll never forget my older brother playing this song in his old truck, I was h hooked. I remember him telling me heroic stories of Adeline and Gillman Streets, two center points rt- f for the prolific punk evolution-revolution that took place from 1989 to 1994: The time period that ...fi or womem produced such underground greats such as Greenday, Operation Ivy, AFI and the mighty Rancid. o Formed to help front man Tim Armstrong crawl out ofthe gutter (and heal from heavy alcohol and heroin use), Rancid combined the power of punk rock heroes such as Lars Fredrickson and Women 18-30, without herpes. Matt Freeman to form a fiery phoenix of new age punk that changed the scene forever. The bands 1994 album, "Let's Go," stands in my mind as one ofthe greatest punk albums of all time. It stands needed to participate in a research out not so much because it heralded the coming ofthe speed punk age that later yielded bands that would bump punk rock "sounding stuff" into the (ugh!) mainstream market; but because "Let's Go" study of an investigational vaccine was one ofthe last albums from the amazing Berkeley/Gillman hay-days that told the story ofthe streets with relentless passion. In 1994, the boys of Rancid lived in the streets, were down and out, to prevent herpes and were punk to a degree that all the kiddies in stud belts that have college paid for will never understand. Better yet, Timmy and Lars from Rancid wrote soulful songs about street life that became testimony to real punk, and became the album "Let's Go." The LP's opening track "Nihilism", starts off with a static line that jumps into the guitar SAFE and CONFIDENTIAL pounding "hi-ho" sound that dominates the album. In classic punk style, all of the album's tunes are short and their sheer speed and strangely melodic nature makes them seem to merge together into a 23 track powerhouse. In almost every song, Freeman, the bassist, runs up and down some of the most difficult scales ever played by a bass player in a punk band. In many ways, Freeman's Call now for a free screening: aggressively amazing musicianship on four string gives Rancid their unforgettable, fist-pumping sound. On most rancid albums, Tim Armstrong and Lars Fredrickson take turns singing, however, on "Let's Go" Timmy takes lead on nearly every song. Since Tim*Armstrong has about six teeth left and scowls and shouts his way through every surging punk anthem on the LP, it gives "Let's Go" a 415-353-0212 sound with more street credibility than most punk albums produced in the last 20 years. No teeth? Now that's punk. "Let's Go" ends with the song "Seven Years Down," in which Tim Armstrong states "I don't www.herpesvaccine.nih.gov give a f***, I never did." Yeah, I've heard that a million times in the bubble punk/Indy lameness that circulates the "punk" scene today, but when Tim says he doesn't care what other people think, it's one hundred percent believable.. .especially after listening to "Let's Go".
