November/December 2019 Chairman’s Report Guisborough U3A I hope that many of you took the opportunity to pop into Guisborough Library last month to have a look at the Gisburne Bible which has been on view there. It was a wonderful reminder of the ancient town in which we have chosen to live. Now that the clocks have gone back at least the mornings will become a little lighter, we won’t talk about the evenings, but with the cooler temperatures it is already apparent that the number of our walkers wear- ing shorts has declined. We are still looking for a volunteer to take over the website from Bernard. He assures me that it will be easy to pick up how to amend and add entries with a little guidance from him, it is just that he has many other activities which he volunteers for and he needs to pass this one on. A reminder that at the 6th Nov get together refreshments will be served before announcements, which will be followed by the talk by Andy Murray with an update on the Town Hall Project. John Wardill Guisborough U3A meetings are normally held on the first Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall, Bow Street. The next ones will therefore be on November 6th and December 4th. You may however book for ex- cursions from 1.30 p.m. Items for the next newsletter, due out Dec/Jan, should be submitted to Alan email [email protected] Charity No 1125829 Excursions November’s excursion is on Thursday, 21st to The Great Yorkshire Brewery at Cropton, Including a tour and lunch. £37 December’s excursion is on Monday, 16th to Ormesby Hall £12 or £7 for National Trust members Booking begins on December 4th for “Holes” Newcastle Theatre Royal Saturday, February 29th £32 Future proposals:- Thursday, 19th March Yorkshire Air Museum April Eden Camp Monday, 18th May Shibden Hall, Halifax. All members of any U3A and their guests are very welcome to join us. Patricia Acoustic and Strings On Thursday 12th September we held the first session of our new Acoustic string music group and what a fun afternoon it was. 8 musi- cians and budding musicians with a wide range of experience turned up with guitars, mandolins and Ukuleles. Ken, the co-ordinator had put together an initial song book to get us started with music drawn from the interests within our group; traditional Folk and Celtic airs to George Ezra via Johnny cash and the Beatles, something for every- one, often outside our personal genre choices but we all waded into it with enthusiasm. Who knows where the time went and where we're headed next but the 2 hours just vanished? We run fortnightly on Thursday afternoons so our next session is not far off, looking for- ward to it already. The International Health Qigong Federation requested groups across the world at 10am local time practice the Wu Qin Xi exercises (5 Animal Frolics). John Poole started the session with warm up exercises. While Sally Eccleshall took a beginners group, Dorothy Poole led the Animal Frolics exercises. This is an ancient system of exercise devised by a Chinese physician from the Han Dynasty (25-220AD) based on the behaviour and activities of the tiger, deer, bear, monkey and crane. Everyone joined together for Tony Broder to lead the Daoyin 12 exercises and finally, Graham Overend led The Mountain Top The sun shone for us and everyone enjoyed practicing Qigong outdoors in such a beautiful and serene setting. Much positive energy (Qi) was generated. We are grateful to Gisborough Priory Project for very kindly giving us permission to hold our event in the Priory grounds. ——————-//——————— There are lots of interesting, enjoyable U3A activities quietly happening in rooms all over Guisborough, activities that would surprise and be of great interest to other members. Its good and helpful to see what else is going on. Send in a picture or two and a short article about your group for the Newsletter. I’m sure they would catch peoples’ imagination and maybe enthuse a few to try something different. Articles to Alan G. We are not running the “wreath making” this year but the library, Guisborough walkway and St Nickolas’s church all have instructions (if you wish) Obviously there will not be room for all 5 to 600 of us to take part so it will be first come first serve .Sign up at the meeting on Wednesday 6th November or contact Peta on Activities.
