Government fails on electricity prices Just more than a year on from the 2015 NSW election, during which the Baird Liberal Government committed to privatising the electricity distribution network in NSW, local families are set to see their power bills rise by an average of $200 per year. • Stop TAFE Cuts Campaign Update March 23, 2018
Stop TAFE Cuts campaign update March 23, 2018 Federation members continue to campaign against the federal and state governments’ failed vocational education policies. The Stop TAFE Cuts campaign has this year held a wide variety of community events and local protests where members have met with students, local government representatives, state MPs and the community to highlight the effect of the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled policy on TAFE students. Actions undertaken this year include: Hamilton TAFE members and students met with state Opposition Leader Luke Foley on 19 February. They informed him that course fees had increased, course delivery hours have been reduced and teachers and support staff were facing job losses. On 20 February in Taree, retired TAFE teachers met with Shadow Minister for Skills Prue Car and local councillor Dr David Keegan. The retired teachers expressed their concern at the redundancies of head teachers at their local college and on the North Coast. Goulburn and District Unions held a protest on 1 March outside an invitation-only community meeting with Premier Gladys Berejiklian. The Goulburn and District Unions were not invited despite nurse-to-patient ratios and cuts to Goulburn TAFE being raised by local media. A small group rallied at Goulburn TAFE to protest the visit of the Premier and her deputy Premier John Barilaro. Kempsey TAFE TA held a stall at Kempsey community markets 3 March where many local people expressed their gratitude at the important role TAFE education and skills played in their town. TAFE members and officers were invited to a roundtable with federal Shadow Minister for Employment Services, Workforce Participation and the Future of Work Ed Husic and Labor candidate for the seat of Gilmore Fiona Phillips in Nowra on 5 March.

The Speaker read the prayer and acknowledgement of country. [Notices of motions given.] Bills GAS LEGISLATION AMENDMENT (MEDICAL GAS SYSTEMS) BILL 2020 First Reading Bill introduced on motion by Mr Kevin Anderson, read a first time and printed. Second Reading Speech Mr KEVIN ANDERSON (Tamworth—Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation) (12:16:12): I move: That this bill be now read a second time. I am proud to introduce the Gas Legislation Amendment (Medical Gas Systems) Bill 2020. The bill delivers on the New South Wales Government's promise to introduce a robust and effective licensing regulatory system for persons who carry out medical gas work. As I said on 18 June on behalf of the Government in opposing the Hon. Mark Buttigieg's private member's bill, nobody wants to see a tragedy repeated like the one we saw at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. As I undertook then, the Government has taken the steps necessary to provide a strong, robust licensing framework for those persons installing and working on medical gases in New South Wales. To the families of John Ghanem and Amelia Khan, on behalf of the Government I repeat my commitment that we are taking action to ensure no other families will have to endure as they have. The bill forms a key part of the Government's response to licensed work for medical gases that are supplied in medical facilities in New South Wales.

[Notices of motions given.] Private Members' Statements TRIBUTE TO SUPERINTENDENT JULIAN GRIFFITHS Ms ELENI PETINOS (Miranda) (12:13): I rise to discuss and farewell the outgoing commander from the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command, Superintendent Julian Griffiths. Our local media has publicised that Superintendent Griffiths has been moved from the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command into the St George Police Area Command. Those of us who have had the opportunity to work with the superintendent, and to know him well, are going to miss him dearly. Media reports have not captured that Superintendent Griffiths is a capable and competent commander who has always been dedicated to serving the local community. He has done that in his capacity as a superintendent of both the Sutherland Shire Local Area Command and the merged Sutherland Shire Police Area Command over the past six years. I was recently told a story about Superintendent Griffiths which highlights the depth of his care and the lengths that he has gone to for the community. It is about the recent fires in the western part of the shire, in Menai, Alfords Point and Barden Ridge.

Under Ben Chifley, Labor established the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme; Medibank under Gough Whitlam; and Medicare under Bob Hawke. At the State-level, the ALP has always worked to build a strong and inclusive public health service in NSW – providing a quality and accessible health and hospital system to all citizens regardless of their income. Sadly, both the Turnbull and Berejiklian Governments are attacking the health system built by Labor. They are reducing the quality and timeliness of clinical care and driving up costs in other parts of the health system. At a State and Federal level the Liberals and Nationals have slashed billions from the health and hospital system – culminating with the Turnbull Government recently slashing $715 million out of Australia’s public hospitals from 2017-2020. The current Liberal/National Governments have got their priorities all wrong at both the State and Federal levels given their billions of dollars in cuts from both our state public health system and our aged care industry.
