[Friday 18 January] Hugh came to Lilianfels with traps [?] & drove us to the Gordon Falls We sat & chatted over old times & back to luncheon. Sir F. Darley had returned from Sydney Walked about during the afternoon Went to Lady Darley’s “Sert” [?] & Miss Darley & Shylie drove in the Sulkey.

[Saturday 19 January] Lilianfels to Sydney The last day of this delightful visit Walked about place with Jn Fredh [?] in person—Told him about the controversy as to Consolidated Stock Early luncheon—He & Mrs Darley & Captn D came to Station to see us off—We left at light [?] to Sydney at 4.12 […] I went to Dentist & they with Mr Hugh London drove round Domain He dined with us & we all went to Opra [?]—Traviata [?] again! not the piece we expected Telephoned the Albertsons [?] but they couldn’t come to Dinner

[Sunday 20 January] Quiet morning at home Afternoon Calls on Mrs F. B. Mrs Sutton—(Mrs Cruikshank & Mrs Brown [?] & the Misses Stephens & Mrs Dickens & Gert Mr & Mrs Villeneurve Iswell (the new flag Lieutt Mr Pratt Barlow came in whilst we were there & Captn Duff ) Mrs Harry Levy where we took up Shylie & Paul (the Jack Wants [?] & Gert also) & Mrs Iswell [?] Then call on Fred: Beach—all the family in Kathleen Fred & Allan— the former [?] such a wee youth—Allan 6/- 2—both like Olive At Dinner Paul Iswell & Hugh London—Long talk after Dinner Mr F B Sutton came by & tendered us [?] [… …] Mr & Mrs Seddon and their son & daur just going off to ship He promised to help us by going to Eng & [the remainder of the entry is incomprehensible]

[Wednesday 23 January] Miss & Mrs Onslow took us for drive to Ch Camden—pretty English looking Village & brick Ch & Recty with tall spire—Whilst looking round the Rectors Grand Son of […] King [?] told Miss Ross (& she us)—& then Mrs O. that news had come thro’ of death of H Majesty—so we drove home—across the beautiful paddocks to seeing the Ewe flock & lamb flock about 100 on the way had Capital look at them Mrs. O. [Saturday 26 January] Death of Majr Taylor Very Warm—Morning to various Shops &c especially to Harris the Picture dealer—Dentist— final visit & gave him cheque for £37.16/ At Luncheon the Miss Stephens & accompanied them to Picture Gallery & to call at […] : K came later & retd home earlier Then I drove to Botanic Gardens& walked there alone passed Lord Hopetoun When I got to the Hotel found Telegram had come “Taylor change for worse fears he is now sinking” from Edwd—Telegram in reply—When we had dined message from Edwd that Majr Taylor dead —Wired to him, Mrs Taylor & Boucaut & K to Sallie & later on came message funeral at 11 Monday impossible to attend I never had a more faithful Secy & friend—his […] to [?] his wife & son

[Sunday 27 January] Shylie went to early Service at Cathedral not many there Breakfast at 9-30. Kitty & Mae [?] packed I wrote letters & arranged papers etc After lunch went to call upon the Governor General

Dr. Paterson, Mr. Griffith Mr. Wensley, & others called to say Good bye—K. & Shylie gave them also The Disagreeable Man” & Miss English friend) tea on the Balcony— Captn. Wallington Also called to say good bye & Paul Smith & A. H. Heaton Dined early & after saying Good bye to the Manager & D. Man said left for Melbourne After having a month of luxurious hospitality from the Govt. Comfortable car provided for us—plenty of room & all we required

[Monday 28 January] Had breakfast at—Served by Mrs. Lewis who gave us some mangles to taste Conductor most kind & kept giving us tea & Biscuits etc. Got into Melbourne 12.30. Met by Mr. Lewis— drove to the Hotel & had lunch. Rested during afternoon. Pleasant dinner & chat with the Lewis until bed time. Called on Sir John Madden.

[Tuesday 29 January] Mrs. Lewis & Shylie went to St Kilda. K & self wrote letters After lunch Mrs. Lewis, K. self & Shylie went to the Gardens & had tea. Walked home through the Fitzroy & Treasury Gardens. Home at ¼ to 7. Lewis waiting

[Wednesday 30 January] Proclamation of the King. K. & self went & afterwards Sir Wm. Neal asked us into his room to have some lunch Met the Maddens & Turners and other friends Home to the Grand

[Thursday 31 January] Went out to Book shop & to buy some ties & things. I met Mrs. Lewis K. Shylie at the Perkins [?] Gallery K. & self went to the Children’s Hospital at 3 4 o’clock. Mrs. Evans, her husband and two little girls came to tea. Gave them a sovn each & K. gave them a box of chocolates each. Mrs

[Friday 1 February] Breakfast at nine o’clock Shylie Shepperd, K. & self went to Curiosity shop. Krissmusks [?] & bought two trinkets, one for Sallie & one for Kitty. Medals etc. Went on by train to the Alfred Hospital Saw Mr. Norman & his wife, also E. who is a small replica of A. Chatted for an hour then returned in time for lunch. K. went to pay Madame Sels [?] & L. […]. Miss K. Gardner well Mr Lewis going to Geelong so we left the Grand at t at 10 to 4 & got to the station in time to say Good bye to them. Mrs. Box with lovely Carnation for K. & Mr. & Mrs. Jenkins were there also Molesworth Green who travelled to Bacchus Marsh Had dinner at Ballarrat & got to bed by eleven. [Saturday 2 February] “Home Sweet Home” Very hot morning. Mac awoke us at 6-30 & we had a nice breakfast at Murray Bridge. Fish etc. Found Hannah had left to be nurse at L. Asylum. Met at Station by Sydney, Sinclair etc. drove to Cathedral to Service. Very beautiful & impressive Service Home to lunch & Lin. & self drove to Town Hall to Council of Churches Service Very long Sallie called after Cathedral Service. Very pleased with the trinket Called at Edwards & Govt. House Henry & Fred came to dinner

[Sunday 3 February] K. too tired to go to Church so Shylie & self went to Franklin St .Found Sydney when I got home Consulted him about Neil Lin. [?] etc. Sallie called on her way to Mrs Popes & afterwards. Lin? [?] & self went to hear Mr. Berrys Staid to Communion.

[Monday 4 February] Called at Club to see Gordon about Sinclair Went to the Court Saw Owen Smyth, Buchanan & others about Taylor’s affairs Lunch at 2 o’clock. Went to Govt. House to meeting of Dr. Martin & others. Saw Gordon. Telegraphed to Florence. After dinner Florence came down. Gordon telephoned could not get […] see me Way, Shylie & Gordon Campbell arrived from Largs at 10.30.

[Tuesday 5 February] Edward called to see us. Florence, & Fred called in & I took her to him. Sir John Downer took her to see Mr. Holder who promised to do all he could for Neil. I saw Mr. Jenkins & explained that his father (Dr. Campbell) had done more for his country than any other public man & I thought his so son was quite entitled to a Commission—he also promised to do all he could K. & self went to see Mrs. Taylor who seemed very highly strung. Freebairn Simpson came in for [?] Neil & congratulated him about being a Lieutenant After dinner wrote letters to Murphy Barr Smith &

[Wednesday 6 February] Got up at 7 o’clock. Florence here over night & Henry came in to breakfast. All anxious about Neil’s Comn. Interviewed the Gardener. Gill called. Left for Court at 10.30 Lady Cl Stanley Clarke called with letter of intro to me from Lord Onslow, husband is Equerry in Waiting to the Prince of Wales Went to Govt House at 12.30. Chatted to the Govr. & had lunch with him. Heard of Neil’s Commission—he is now Lieutt. Campbell Meeting at Pirie St. Lecture Hall 4.30.

[Thursday 7 February] Went to Court—Boucaut & others. Home to lunch & K & self went to meeting of Maternity Home at the Banquet room. Not many there—too warm. Sir Edwin Smith spoke of my efforts in the Woman’s Fund in very disparaging manner. Drove to Edwards & K. & Sallie went to Exn. Camp—Saw Neil after dinner went to 20th Century Fund in Pirie St School Room

[Friday 8 February] Took Florence & K. down to see the procession. Had very good view from King Wm. Street, Hindley Street & N. Terrace. Left then at the Ex. Building & they went on to Camp. Home to lunch ar 1.30 Meetings during afternoon 2.30 Pirie St. Vestry. Public Library 3. University Ed. Council 4 o’clock Meeting at Franklin St. Ex Committee

[Saturday 9 February} Very hot day Neil sailed for South Africa Breakfast at 9–30 Neil dad gone off early in the morng. K. Florence & self drove down & had a very good view. Drove to Court & did my business back to Montefiore & took K. to […] Sir Stanley & Lady Clarke came to luncheon. Had visited the Ch. Hospital on their way. Mr. Andrew Johnson also came Sent them down in carriage & called for them to show them the Gallery. Very pleasant—then took them to station & went in Turkish Bath Shylie & the rest went to see Neil off. Shylie went to Blackwood.

[Sunday 10 February] Bought Cloisonne Vase. Very hot day. Up at 9.30. Kitty Billy & self had breakfast & went to Chapel—Mr. Holder preached a very fine Sermon from Micah 6th Ch & 8th verse “ What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly & have mercy & to walk humbly with God” Talked to Mr. Ma\u/ghan & Dr. & Mrs. Farr [?] after service. Went to Buxton St to see Mrs. H. Taylor but she had gone to see Lady Boucaut. Very upset about he affairs Mr. McGregor partner of John Duff of Japan [?] called to show me a magnificent Cloisonne Vase. Went with him to Mr. Gill’s & then purchased the vase giving ₤35–6 for it. K.& self saw Billy off & walked round the garden with gardener & Evelyn Dutton Green called

[Monday 11 February] Very hot Breakfast at 9–30. Went down to the Court. Home to lunch—K. & self drove down to town—she went to the State Council meeting & I to Victoria called for me at Ernsts [?] & I called at Edwards for Katharin Eds. told me about Verco wanting house After dinner K. & self walked round to the Gardens & discussed Sinclairs affairs. Gordon says it is preposterous Sat up & wrote to Barr Smith & Mr. McGregor

[Tuesday 12 February] Slightly Cooler Up at nine. Too wet looking to go to Sea View. Drove to town at 10–30. To Chambers Saw Johnston from Gordon’s Office & like his appearance very much indeed.. Home to lunch & back to meeting at 2 Got home at 6 o’clock. dined & K & self went for a walk. Beautiful sunset & cloud effect which lasted until dark Dropped letter \to/ the Commandant for Sinclair.

[Wednesday 13 February] Went to call upon Mr. Barton at the Gresham. Went to Elder & Smith found Barr Smith had left Very annoyed to have missed him Sinclair wrote letter to Staff office about Captn. Humphries. Wrote English letters to Sir John Cockburn Sir Fowell Buxton

[Thursday 14 February] Breakfast 9 o’clock. Edward called to tell me that House \was going to be/ sold to Verco—if terms agreed to. Drafted out letter for him to write to Verco Ferris [?] best [?] mail letters K. wrote to Mrs Swinburne & Rita King

[Friday 15 February] Went down to Chambers Home to lunch K. & self drove down to town. I went to Ware’s Office to meeting K went for Bag [?] to Court. She had a chat with Judge Boucaut. On to University.—then to Public L K. called on Olive & Elizabeth Wrote & posted letters to Mr. Barr Smith about Elder statue. Wrote to Mrs. Onslow `` [Saturday 16 February] Beautiful Day Letter from Mr. Barr Smith giving consent Up at 7 o’clock. Breakfast and started for Sea View. Gordon Simpson going with us Sinclair drove—Got to Sea View 12–30. Lunch at 2 Very vexed to find Murphy had gone to the Races Drove round the paddocks. Sea looked beautiful Saw some Plover on the wing. Had tea & read the papers after.

[Sunday 17 February] Back from Sea View. Very close. Murphy not home until 9 o’clock. Saw him after breakfast about accounts etc. Very annoyed that he should have gone away Left Sea View about 3–30. Got home at ¼ to 7. K. had had face ache & went to bed. Sinclair went to Largs Bay & telephoned up to say he saw the Forrests [?] & Fyshs come up by train. They arrived here at 10 o’clock. K too ill to come down. Guests left at 11 o’clock. Sir John & Lady F staid all night

[Monday 18 February] Very Sultry K. better. Breakfast at 9–30. General Gordon came in to see the Forrests Went down to Chambers. Comtee Meeting Elder Statue & Com aggd to adopt Woolner Bust. Home at 5 to 12 for papers found they were not there.On to meeting about Elder Statue & Lunch at 1–30 Sir John & Lady Forrest Sir Philip & Lady Fysh, General Gordon Sir K.C. Bakewell looked in J. W. Bakewell called Went down to see them off at Station then back to the University. Special Council Meeting aggreed to rehabilate Medical School Called at Edwards for K. Sallie was ill. Home to dinner Appointed Dr. Richards Associate Sat up until 2 o’clock writing letters & drafting lette memo as to Drury’s […]

[Thursday 21 February] Kitty got up up at ¼ to 6 Left by 7–30 train for Woodside She was met by John Thorne & driven to Woodside. Arr. At 9 o’clock Opened Fair at 3.30 Got home 7–30 I at Criminal Sittings all day Called at Edwards Letter from His Excellency

[Friday 22 February] Very close Breakfast at 9 o’clock Down to Court at 10. Sat all day until 8 o’clock in the evening K. had tea with Lady […] at G.H.

[Saturday 23 February] Still very sultry Went down to Court Billy came down in Evening with sore eyes

[Sunday 24 February] Too hot to go to Church Mary Weston came in the afternoon

[Tuesday 26 February] The Revd. Wm. Allan arrived at 11.30. Billy was here & looked after him. Meeting at Pirie St. Chapel K. Self & Mr. Allan went Mr. Piper elected President

[Wednesday 27 February} Proclamation of King E. the VI Very warm day. K. Self, Revd. Mr. Allan Shylie & Billy went down to the Town hall to see the English Troops Pass—Very fine sight At ¼ to 3 we all went down to the Victoria Park. Great crowd. We went up to the Stewards Stand & had a good view of it all. His Ex. Lady T. Sir Rt Mrs. Baker & many others there Beautiful sight. In the Evening went down to the Meeting dinner at the Club Revd. Mr. Allan spoke at the Conference.

[Thursday 28 February] The Revd. Mr. Allan very ill. Sent for Edward but he was operating & Dr. Hamilton came. Bilious attack very severe & he was ill all day In the evening got a special Car for him & Sin. Went down on Board —he was better then & more comfortable K. sent basket of fruit to Col. Wyndham. Lord Falconer came over in the afternoon. Pleased to see Fruits [?] Took Magpies to Club for

[Saturday 2 March] Very sultry Dr. Farr [?] telephoned to say one of his boys had died in the night Wanted advice. May Byard came to lunch. Left for Way College at ¼ to 3. Sydney unveiled the Brass Tablet to young Marshall I went to the funeral of the boy. Mr. James in the Carriage with me.

[Sunday 3 March] Went to Gilbert St. Chapel in the morning. Mr. & Mrs. Holde were there. Called at Edwards & saw Dr. Lawson & Marion who had just returned from Tasmania Picked up Gordon Simpson & brought him home to lunch Sallie & Marion called in the afternoon Wrote letters until late

[Monday 4 March] Went down to Chambers Home at two o’clock. Walked round the garden & then worked in Library Murphy came down to sell cattle got ₤5. A head for them. K. & self went to Meeting at Maughan Church. Splendid Congregation. Speeches were very good

[Tuesday 5 March] Went down to Chambers Took Libel Case. Adjourned it Home at ¼ to one. Had lunch. Then went to Pirie St Chapel Went to Stationto say good bye to Edward who was going to Pt. Lincoln. Dr. Lawson & Miss de Gaschier were there & Marion Saw Mr. Brookman At 5.30 went to Beaches to the “old Boys” Had a very nice gathering Read papers until 11 o’clock. Good night’s rest Mr. Hawes called on K.

[Wednesday 6 March] Beautiful Day Rose at ¼ to 9 Breakfasted Wrote let Cards of introduction for Mr. C.H. Hawes who brought a letter from Mr. C. Tregelyn. Left at ¼ to 11 for the Court Mrs. Birks called to say Good bye to K. before going to England. Mrs. A. Rankine, Mrs. Gale, & the Misses Barnes from Penola, Mrs. & Mrs. Hall also called & Mrs. Geshing [?] who staid to dinner

[Thursday 7 March] Meeting at Childrens Hospital Dr. Lendon in the Chair. Mr. & Mrs. Brookman were welcomed back. Shylie returned from Blackwood where she had been for nearly a month

[Friday 8 March] Drove down to Chambers Too busy to attend Show. Called to see the Governor twice but he was engaged both times Meetings at University & had letter from Kingston asking me to see Sir Hugh Nelson, so called & drove him to Montefiore he was on his way to W. Australia Telegram from Sir John Forrest to say he had got in unoposed. Sent reply at once.

[Sunday 10 March] Beautiful Change Billy & self went to Franklin St Chapel. Howchin preached a splendid Sermon. On to the Club to see Mr. Hawes who was at Cathedral & spending day at the Popes. Walked in garden with K. Rested after lunch—Sir John & lady Downer called. Talked about elections etc. Mrs. Taylor & Tom also called & the Dalton Green girls who told us with great joy that their Mother was going to England. Wrote out Sinclairs reply to Captn Humphries in Evening & during the afternoon

[Monday 11 March] Drove down to Chambers Felt very tired sitting up with Sinclair until 3–30. Interview with Kingston who was very pleasant as to altho’ opposed to sending reps Delegates to Engld wd […] 4 […] [… … … ] in prog: […] Home to lunch. walked in garden pleased with progress. K. wrote to Mrs. Lewis At ¼ to 3 drove down to Court. K. went to State Council meeting & then to look at furniture for Sea View—back to the Court for me—we then drove to Pirie St Chapel where I saw Burgess who told me the shameful treatment he had rec? at the hands of the Officials at Sydenham Road. Coming home Elizabeth, Fred & Bertie picked me up & when we went into the garden found Kitty & Edward talking [?], he had seen her in the garden & came in to speak to he about the Bundey Case—he said I had considered Bundey quite enough (looking gravely at K. she agreed with him. Then he asked if Samuel was worried about Chilagoes—I said “Rather” & he explained what he had done—sold them in Engd. & bought when he came back—he told K. if he had kept Fingalls he would have made ₤3000 but he had sold them but had made something out of them [the remainder of this entry is on the previous page]

[Friday 27 September] Up at nine o’clock & had breakfast Mr. Lewis the M.P came to talk to me about the Anderson Pedro Case. Drove up to Edward’s house to see him not knowing he had lunch at his rooms After my own lunch I drove down to see Edward & had a long chat

[Saturday 28 September] Very tired & rested in bed until 9. o’clock. Mr. Gill came in to see me & I had a long chat Just as we were walking up from the dining–room a long ring came to the telephone & Kitty went—it it was to tell The Chief Justice to go up to the Hospital at once as Dr. Way was very ill. I as going up when I met Marion coming in the Hansom. She got out & went in for her Aunt & I drove on to find Dr. Watson, Hayward (Gerald) Evans, Angas Thurson [?] & others trying to restore life by artificial respiration but it was of no avail & after faithfully working for more than an hour they gave up hope & placed his dear body on the table that he had just used for the woman. They sent for Dawn[?] who put the body in a shell & removed it to their home where it was soon surrounded by flowers sent by loving friends. He looked young, peaceful & happy & free from all the pain he bore so bravely during his life time

[Sunday 29 September] A very sad awakening to think Edward is with us no longer K. & self drove up to help Inman chose a sight in the N. Road Cemetery for W Edward’s grave People called to kindly inquire Florence & Florrie down.

[Monday 30 September] A sad gloomy day Went up to Sallies. Wrote inscriptions for wreaths for K.& self. The girls in the West for their Father. Grand children for their Grandfather. [Sunday 20 October] Up to breakfast at 9. o’clock Walked about the place & rode round with Archie & Shylie. After lunch Jack drove us to Katnook to see the John Riddocks—there place was first a bower of beautiful roses They were very kind to us. We got home in time for dinner & all sang in the eveg. Mr. Stoney [?] had spent the day & Mr. Simpson came in the evening.

[Monday 21 October] Professor Ryan came to break in some wild horses & N Jack got three traps put down for us to sit in—It was wonderful to see the man take quite an unbroken filly in a small yard & commence by striking it with a long pole & then making it go round the same way. Then putting a rope over it & by & bye putting a saddle & bridle on & at last standing on its back. After lunch Mrs. & Mrs. Riddock came & watched also—We had tea down there & then Mr. Haddon whom I had invited to go to Mt Gambier with us left by train Archie driving over 4 in hand We met the Sheriff & Dr. Richards

[Tuesday 22 October] Case over in half an hour Went for a drive before lunch

[Wednesday 23 October] Left Glen Roy for Adelaide Left Mount Gambier ¼ to 6. Met K. at Glenroy Siding. Said good bye to them all & left Mr. Haddon with them Very uninteresting journey home & we had our lunch at Wolsely. The journey was tiring & without incident Got home at 7–30 & k. went straight to bed tired out. Gordon Campbell was here & dined with me. Went to bed early & awoke with a very bad headache.

[Thursday 24 October] Went to see Professor & the Misses Morris off by train. Also saw General & the Misses Low & Capt Tupper All going in the same Steamer Home to lunch University Council at 3 Finance Comttee. Lady Tennyson called to see K. had a long chat with her. K. & self drove down to the Botanical Gars. Walked right through & out at the other gate. Met the Victoria [?] & drove home—met Gordon Simpson, asked for his brother who was wounded at the war.

[Monday 28 October] Annual Meeting Chn. Hospital Drove down to Chambers. K. went to Miss Hardys Office to arrange about N.M.Fête: Florence & Florry to lunch. All went down to Meeting of Childrens Hospital. Had a capital time speaking. The Attorney General also spoke beautifully, going back to the time of the Caesars. Sent Harry back to Montefiore as K. was taking the carriage down to the Railway Station to meet Katie Irwin who came in the German boat. K. sent them home in the carriage & then went to see the Governor about going to the N.M.Fête. She met him & Lord VC [?] coming from the Ex Council & had a chat. His Ex had to Lay a Foundation Stone of the Congregational Church at Rose Pk. Then to the N.M.Fête. K. & self drove up to see Katie & her children & little Bobbie took to her Uncle Samuel at once, would even have come home with him & Insisted in showing her doll to him—showing how she could put it to sleep—Read Papers & wrote after dinner. Florence down to go to the grave.

[Thursday 31 October] Went down to Chambers At 12.30 looked in at the Rose Show and was speaking to the Governor when Elizabeth came up & said Nellie Weston was there —so I went & spoke to her—the Governor going on—he asked me to have lunch with him & I did as K. at home busy getting Shylie’s trunks off to Melbourne. Shylie & Mrs. John Riddock left Glen Roy in the morning—staid at Wolsely all day & joined the train at night Capt Fielder left by 2nd Train for M.

[Sunday 3 November] Very Hot day Did not go to Chapel. Telephoned to Dr Wood the examiner of Music sent by the Associated Bd. who is staying at the Adelaide Club asked him over to lunch, he was very pleased to come & we found him a very interesting man—he had been told it would be a mere holiday trip but found the work had increased & he was worked night & day—Mrs. Michael Hawker & the Dutton Greens Gordon Simpson & others called & we were shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. George Turnbull. She had been ill for some time but no one thought the end would be so soon Went to Franklin St in the evening to hear Mr. Cox from Kent Town preach Florence returned from Sydney

[Monday 4 November] Very Hot In all the morning waiting for news of the Omrah who has on board the Governor of Tasmania & his wife. Had word that they wd. be up about 1 o’clock & went down to meet them at Station Took them to the Botanic Gardens also to the Zoo—they were very much pleased then we drove to Montefiore & had lunch. Board of Musical studies 5. o’clock Met Professor Rennie & Bragg After lunch we went out [?]– the gardens & then drove down King Wm. St then to the Station where I presented Lady Havelock with “For the Term of Natural Life” Colonel Makin went down with them to the Ship. I went to a meeting then home Florence came down.

[Tuesday 5 November] Full Court Much cooler this morning though the sun still hot.Drove down to the Court & took my seat on the Bench with Mr. Justice Boucaut. Drove home to lunch—read letters and then went back to meeting K. Went to meeting Lady V.G Cent [?] Home at 4.30 & got ready to ride but found the pony too fidgety as he had not been out all day further than O’Connell Street. Walked round the garden & fed birds K. posted letters to S. Africa

[Wednesday 6 November] Up writing letters before breakfast. Mr. Gill drove \came/ to see me about Picture K & self drove down to town. She looked at the Picture gallery whilst I went to the University. I then went to the Executive Council. K. on to a meeting at the Y.W.C.A. Home to lunch then got to my letters. Writing testimonials for Dr. Farr, Wheatly & others Saw John Thorne in town Gordon Campbell came to dinner & stay the night. Mr. Lewis came to see me.

[Thursday 7 November] Drove down with K. she went to a meeting of the Kintore Homes. Home to lunch. K. drove down to a Meeting at Miss Hardys then we went to a meeting at the Children’s Hospital

[Friday 8 November] Very Hot Day— Went down to Chambers. Had interview with Owen Smyth. Home to lunch found Florence there at lunch & had a chat about the Ch. Hospital Secretaryship Drove to Meeting of Finance Miss Blue came down in the evening & we are shocked to see her look so ill—she has lost her voice & seems very weak.

[Saturday 9 November] Very hot—Went down to Chambers Wrote letters to Mrs. G. Duffy, Her Excellency & others. Home to lunch, still very hot. Like a furnace

[Sunday 10 November] Went down to Chapel heard Mr. Burt [?] preach. Home & K. & self drove up to Sallie’s Saw Mr. Weston & he tells me Kadlunga is looking beautiful. Home to lunch Quiet afternoon K & self went for a walk. Very hot night

[Monday 11 November] Cooler—Mr Gill called Mr Symons called from Broken Hill for Testimonials to Town Clerk K. sang to me during the did not feel well Inman came down after lunch & we went for a ride round the Stockade Road—my pony fell just after he passed Enfield & Jepps Cross. Did not hurt his Knees

[Tuesday 12 November] Wrote to James Smith & others Called at Govt. House & the University Home to lunch. Miss Blue called Saw Dr. Barlow as to report recd. from Stirling as to the Pro of Music This afternoon went back to town went to Committee as of Way College & I am to suggest to Dr Burgess & Mr. Chapple turning it into a Ladies College Then walked home Dined & read K. saw Miss Blue off & went up to see the Turnbull girls

[Wednesday 13 November] K. not well—has a bad cold I went down to the Court. Then to the Executive Council. Saw the Chief Secretary about the Hospital trouble also about a piece of land behind the Bowling—Green for the University Home to lunch. Went to see Mr. Kay then on to Supreme Ct. to sign papers then came home. Went to call upon Dr. & Mrs. Lowson. Wrote to Kintores, Sir Fowell, to John Wilton [?] Mr. Spicer. Mr. Bourne

[Thursday 14 November] Up at 9 & breakfast ½ past.

[Friday 15 November} Up & breakfasted Mr. Gill looked in Home to lunch University special council 3.30 Public Library Board 4 o’clock.

[Saturday 16 November] K. & self left town for Northern Circuit Colonel & Mrs. Makin in the compartment Very cold drive when we got to Kadlunga. Met by Mr. Weston

[Sunday 17 November] K’s cold very bad & she staid in bed ½ the day I drove all round with Mr. W. Seaview. Rode in the afternoon—Every thing very pretty.

[Wednesday 20 November] Travelled from Pt. Augusta to Gladstone Very wet at Kadlunga. K. left for Adelaide. Marion Way met her at the station , & staid with K.

[Thursday 21 November] Gladstone Circuit Court opens

[Friday 22 November] Marion & self met Katie in town Mrs. Thomas had driven K. down. Rushed home & got table prettily laid as the C.J. came home from Circuit. C.J. Marion & self dined

House to meet the New Governor of Victoria. Very pleasant people indeed & we spent a happy hour—drove the Bishop home—called in at The Farrs & then got home in time to greet Gracie & the children. Phylis much altered Janet Harvey grown a beautiful child & so loving & sweet Sallie came to see the chiln. Gracie & children went to Mrs. Watts.

[Wednesday 25 December] Beautiful day—rather hot Sallie, Katie, Marion, Inman & Gracie went up to Edwards grave After dinner Inman dressed up as F. Christmas & gave all the children a present. Adeline Harmer came round & had some presents The children enjoyed themselves very much

Archie, Billy & Gordon Simpson arrived from the Gem French Steamer to where they had spent the morning with the Haddons at 4.30 & we left them for Sea View Billy & Simpson riding The C.J. Katie Irwin & her two children myself, Delia & Katie’s nursemaid Archie Blue drove us Arrived at 8 o’clock
