COMPETITIVE SAFETY IN CHRB SPOTLIGHT AT DEL MAR MEET By T.D. Thornton SCHUYLERVILLE KICKS Book-ended by last summer=s spate of equine fatalities at Del Mar Club and the track=s highly visible hosting of OFF SPA MEET the Breeders= Cup World Championships this autumn, the California Board (CHRB) met at Del Mar July 20 and led off by detailing new safety measures that have been instituted for the just-started season. AIf there=s an upside to the experience we all had last summer, it=s that the board, working with [Del Mar], has come up with provisions that we think are going to better safeguard horse and rider,@ said CHRB executive director Rick Baedeker. AAnd these are things that we think can continue going forward.@ Cont. p4 (Click here)

Baedeker added that Del Mar has reduced its stall allocation capacity from 2,050 last summer to 1,850 for the current meet, Awhich reduces the traffic on the racetrack.@ Del Mar is also continuing a practice it instituted at the end of last year that restricts on-track activity for the first 10 minutes after training begins or after renovation breaks so that only horses participating in timed workouts will be allowed on the surface. Then there were spots in the base that needed to be corrected all the way around.@ After studying data that showed that Del Mar=s main dirt track doesn=t really settle into a consistent surface until three or four race days have been run, Baedeker said Del Mar preceded the meet this summer by working the track on dark afternoons for a few days in the same way it would if races were in progress, which meant sending the harrows and watering equipment around the oval every half hour throughout the day. The turf course, Baedeker reported, has established Anice, dense growth, which the Bermuda grass should afford you. Regarding the track work, commissioner Alex Solis, a longtime California-based jockey who has been inactive from riding since April because of an injury, said, AI had a few conversations with a few of the riders, and I think they are all very happy with what has been done with the track. I wish I was riding this year, because it looks very good.@ Baedeker said the CHRB recently met with the San Diego chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to detail all of the above initiatives and to hear the group=s concerns in advance of the Del Mar meet. AThis past year has not been easy. It has been very difficult for all of us in terms of trying to guarantee not only the product we put out, but the safety of all participants, equine and human,@ said commissioner Madeline Auerbach. RECOGNIZING THE THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY'S UNSUNG HEROES

2016 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards by Amie Karlsson The unsung heroes of the industry will be put in the spotlight at the second running of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards presented by Godolphin Oct. 13. The nominations close Aug. 1. The awards recognize and reward the outstanding talent, diligence and commitment of the farm and racing stable staff who are at the heart of the thoroughbred industry in the United States. Having started in Great Britain 10 years ago, the program has now found its way into five countries. It was established in the USA last year, and at the inaugural awards ceremony in October 2016, awards were distributed in five categories: Leadership (racing), Leadership (breeding), Dedication to Racing, Dedication to Breeding, and a Thoroughbred Industry Community Award. For the second running, a sixth category has been added. Jimmy Bell, President of Godolphin in America, said: "Godolphin, along with its partners, The Jockey Club, TOBA and the National HBPA have added a new category this year called the ANewcomer@ award. This basically identifies employees who have less than five years' experience in the industry, but show dramatic potential in their areas of expertise." The total prize-pool this year for the six categories is $128,000, with prizes being awarded to the winners as well as the runners-up and their farms or racing stables for five of the categories, and the winner and a charity of their choice for the community award. In its initial year, 114 employees were nominated, and the awards ceremony at Keeneland was a great event to honor some of the hard-working people in the industry. One of last year's five winners was Melissa Cohen, assistant trainer for Richard Violette. Cont. p9 TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 9 OF 9 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JULY 21, 2017

Giving everything for Kevin Manning as they drew away from BOLGER MAKES MAGIC the remainder in the straight, the Godolphin blue was in charge this time as the Bolger representative thrust his head in front on AT LEOPARDSTOWN the line. AHe turned it on there,@ the winning trainer said. AWe were always hoping to sneak a Group 1 win into him somewhere, as he is stallion material, so it would be nice to really cement that pedigree with a performance. He ran well in the Irish Champion last year and is a better horse this year, so I would imagine that is on the agenda.@ Jockey Kevin Manning added, AHe had had some very good runs here and battled well. I always felt I was going to get on top of him and that little bit of ease in the ground really suits him-- he enjoys that bit of kindness. He deserves to get one of these again.@ Cont. p2

IN TDN AMERICA TODAY COMPETITIVE SCHUYLERVILLE KICKS OFF SPA MEET Moonlight Magic (blue) bests Deauville in the Meld | Racing Post Trainer Todd Pletcher aims to add a seventh GIII Schuylerville S. win to his resume with Stainless (Flatter), who will contest the AI knew coming up to this race that if whatever he did was not opening day feature at Saratoga. Click or tap here to go good enough to win, then I couldn=t win with him,@ explained straight to TDN America. the sage Jim Bolger after Moonlight Magic (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) had ground down Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) late on in Thursday evening=s G3 Icon Meld S. at Leopardstown. Despite his string of defeats defining his passage since his last success in this sphere in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial last May, the bay has shown marked best form at this particular course, at which he opened his black-type account in the 2015 Listed Eyrefield S. As recently as September, the homebred with true blue blood was sixth in a heavyweight renewal of the G1 Irish Champion S. behind Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and New Bay (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), but ahead of Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Harzand (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Hawkbill (Kitten=s Joy), and on that showing was fully entitled to beat Deauville especially receiving weight and after the rain had eased the ground. Coming back up off a latest third in the 10-furlong G3 International S. at a Curragh venue at which he seems a few pounds inferior on July 2, Moonlight Magic stuck reasonably close to the Ballydoyle favourite as that rival took them along. Aidan O=Brien revealed that Deauville is heading back to Chicago in a bid for the Aug. 12 GI Arlington Million, having finished third in it in 2016. AWe=re delighted with him and the plan is go to Arlington,@ he said. AHe needed to run and the rain wasn=t an advantage, but Jim=s horse is decent and the two went away.@

Pedigree Notes... Melikah, who was third in the 2000 G1 Epsom Oaks and runner-up in the Irish equivalent, is one of eight black-type winners out of the world-renowned G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe heroine Urban Sea, with arguably the best being another son of Cape Cross in Sea the Stars (Ire). Melikah is also responsible for the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner Masterstroke (Monsun {Ger}) and is the second dam of the G2 UAE Derby and G3 UAE Oaks scorer Khawlah (Ire), also by Cape Cross, and now the dam of Godolphin=s exciting 2-year-old colt Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), who was third in last month=s Listed Chesham S. Recently, the dynasty has had more stardust sprinkled on by another Epsom Oaks third in Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and by Armande (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who took the G2 Prix Corrida and was third in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Melikah has an as-yet unraced 3-year-old colt Emirates Prince (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a 2-year-old filly also by that sire and a yearling colt by Dansili (GB). Send Press Releases to: Heartache | Racing Post [email protected] >HORSE= ABSENTEE FROM SUPER SPRINT De Bruyne Horse (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) was a surprise absentee from the list of final declarations for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury on Saturday. The Woodcote S. winner headed the ante-post market with some bookmakers at around 5-1, but will not take his chance in the valuable five-furlong contest. Tim Palin, racing manager for owners Middleham Park Racing, said, "He runs in the [G2] Prix Robert Papin [Maisons-Laffitte] on Sunday instead. Basically the lure of a Group 2 and the race cutting up helped us decide, and he'll be more suited over five and a half furlongs." Cont. p4 SIRE LISTS Sponsored by
