PRESS RELEASE Competition for Artistic Intervention on State Buildings The "Crocodile", a legendary swiss locomotive brought back to life by Olivier Mosset and Xavier Veilhan In the competition for artistic intervention on the state buildings of PLATEFORME 10, the jury awarded the prize to the artists Olivier Mosset (CH) and Xavier Veilhan (F) for their "Crocodile" project, a monumental painted metal sculpture inspired by the legendary locomotive The jury members were attracted by the iconic aspect of the proposal and its strong connection to the history of the site. The work will be produced to accompany the gradual opening of PLATEFORME 10 from 2019. "Crocodile" will be moved around the site to follow the progress of the project and the opening of the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts (mcb-a), then the building that will house the Musée de l’Elysée and the mudac. The ten jury members met for two days and examined 16 projects for the selective tender competition for the production of an artistic intervention on the PLATEFORME 10 site. With a budget of 567'000 francs (for the competition organisation and the production of the artistic intervention), the competition was overseen by the State of Vaud department of buildings, heritage and logistics (SIPaL). Following its deliberations, the almost unanimous jury named the "Crocodile" project, by artists Olivier Mosset and Xavier Veilhan, a monumental painted metal sculpture inspired directly by the iconic appearance of the locomotive "Ce 6/8II", nicknamed "Crocodile" for its distinctive shape and color. The sculpture was the result of the combined efforts of the two artists who had never worked together before.

  • Xavier Veilhan «Orchestra» 76 Rue De Turenne : 10 Septembre - 12 Novembre, 2011

  • Xavier Veilhan «Orchestra» 76 Rue De Turenne : September 10 - November 12, 2011
Xavier Veilhan «Orchestra» 76 rue de Turenne : September 10 - November 12, 2011 “Orchestra” rings out under the direction of the artist Xavier Veilhan as a polyphony of objects, renewing the perception of space in the Galerie Perrotin in Paris. The event marks a turning point through works that, for the most part, have never been seen before. At the same time, it initiates an introspective turn in the artist’s modus operandi. The new shapes displayed are not a negation of previous works, but rather inscribed in their continuity. “Mobile n°4” and “Stabiles” lend themselves readily to the visual field opened by Calder, which Xavier Veilhan exploits in a contemporary manner time and again. He also returns to painting by presenting old-fashioned images rendered traditionally; trees and birds that at first glance contrast sharply with the technical skill of certain works like “Turbine” and even contradict the autonomy of production of “Pendulum Dripping”. Xavier Veilhan thus evokes his interest for technique and its evolution in accordance with art history. “Orchestra” is, however, a paradoxical synthesis, because even though the works are situated in a conceptual or thematic continuity, they also mark a visual and formal turning point in the artist’s approach. “Marine” for example, is not faceted in the way the “Architects” were. This more plausible sculpture clarifies the status of the imprint of the real that sculpture maintains in Xavier Veilhan’s method. The space is encompassed by exhibition techniques setting up instances of direct confrontation between the spectator and the figures represented. “The Monument” sets up a truly suprematist architectural space – another development in the work of Xavier Veilhan – and is thus made practicable to visitors.

Two new sculpture collections are being presented, the Stabiles and the Figures on plinths. Xavier Veilhan explores the conventions of classical statuary through a modernist and avant-garde aesthetic. During La Force de l’Art in 2006, the installation Le Baron de Triqueti, rendered this temporal oscillation of the artist, which also leads him to combine the most advanced technology with a traditional workmanship, palpable. For the past few years, Xavier Veilhan has been using a three dimensional sensing technique to make statues of friends or famous personalities who pose for him, produced from computer files that reproduce a «cloud of points». The series, The Architects in the gardens of Versailles in 2009, unveiled portraits ranging from realistic representation to the limits of abstraction.

Arched and angled, blocked and striated, cut from pure shimmering color endlessly faceted, the city accumulated, stabbed, stacked, as if some geologic force thrust each perfect form slipping through earth. An elegant skyward rise, a knife stabbing the air. The crystal grew slender spires sharp as needles and hard angled towers like abandoned stacks of boxes, in unwavering geometric certitude and odd, undulating shimmies. Either windowless or simply a single solid opaque block, an eruption of ancient stone from the deepest bejeweled caverns of the earth or advanced tech crafted by evolved humans or something stranger and exponentially more sophisticated. A gemmy crust that could cover the earth forever or a mirage that might vanish as quickly and silently as it appeared. The color of the glass seemed both luminous and reflective, its chroma a liquid living force but hard in a way that no human stress or strain could snap. Ultramarine blues and skypure cobalts, sundropped yellows and dragon’s blood reds, Indian turquoise and milky amaranth, arboreal greens and uncompromising ebonies, decadent red and merciful amethyst, unblanched ecru and chocolate brown, the darkening orange of old flames and the blue-white of fresh snow.
