Bullitt, Alexander Scott, 1762-1816 MSS. A Bullitt Family B9370 Papers - Oxmoor Collection, 1683-2003. 164 cu.ft. 6-55, 90, Bullitt was born in Virginia and moved to 114, Louisville sometime in 1784. He married 133, Priscilla Christian, the daughter of Col. 283, William Christian, and settled on land in 332- eastern Jefferson County on the Beargrass 336, Creek. He built Oxmoor ca. 1791, was at the 340, state Constitutional Convention in 1792 and 354, served as the first Lieutenant Governor for the state. Bullitt's papers consist of -2- MSS. correspondence, business, land, legal, A military papers ranging from 1782-1816, and an B9370 inventory of his estate made after his death 364, in June of 1816. Papers pertain to the early 366, settlement of Louisville, the building of 369, Oxmoor, the local Indian situation, the 378- saltworks at Mann's and Bullitt's Lick, 379a, slavery, and politics. Correspondents include 382- George Nicholas, Harry Innes, Burr and Leven 383, Powell, Stephen Ormsby, William Fleming, Walter 393- Warfield, Henry Massie, and Helen Bullitt 394, Massie.(6-55) Letter dated 9 August 1789 from 400, Cuthbert Bullitt to his son re: Cuthbert's land and business in Kentucky. (90) Undated letter -3- MSS. from Helen Scott Bullitt to her daughter-in-law A Priscilla Bullitt re: Alexander's illness.(114) B9370 Henry M. Bullitt included a short biography of 403, his grandfather Bullitt in a family history he 407, compiled in 1892.(133) Letter dated 10 February 414- 1790 from Parmenas Bullitt to Alexander re: 415, ParI enas taking Alexander's tobacco to market. 417, Letter dated 30 July 1790 from Cuthbert Bullitt 420- to his son Alexander warning him of Cuthbert's 421, half-brothers John, Burwell, and Parmenas.(283) 423, In a manuscript written in 1906 by Thomas W. 450, Bullitt titled My Life at Oxmoor, he mentioned 452, his grandfather Alexander and how he came to Kentucky and settled upon Oxmoor.(332-335) -5- MSS. (354) 615, Alexander was mentioned in several documents in 617, the legal papers of his son William C. Bullitt 924, dated 1812 re: a property boundary dispute 1317, between Brown and John Veech, 10 February 1813 2353, re: John Christian's estate, 1815-1826 re: Alexander's guardianship of Eliza Prather, and -6- MSS. 7 July 1825 re: William Christian's estate. A (364,366,369) Documents re: the settlement of B937c Alexander's estate dated 24 May 1817 and 10 2367- December 1821.(364,366) There were references 2372, to Bullitt in his son William's correspondence 3188, dated 20 January 1818 and 28 September 1819. 3293 (378) Undated legal document re: John Floyd's OVSZ Beargrass Creek land and the line of division of Floyd's, William Christian's, Alexander Scott Bullitt's, and John Veech's land. (379) Scrapbook of original deeds, surveys, plats, photos, etc. to Oxmoor included original deed dated 5 January 1787 from Benjamin Sebastian to Alexander Scott Bullitt for 500 acres of the -7- MSS. Oxmoor property. (379a) Contract dated 1 March A 1813 in which Alexander Scott Bullitt hired a B937c substitute for his son during the War of 1812.(382) In a pamphlet dated 10 June 1869 written by William C. Bullitt he mentioned his father Alexander's move to Kentucky. (383) Bullitt was referred to throughout the correspondence of his mother-in-law Annie Christian mostly regarding the handling of William Christian's estate in letters dated 1786-1791.(393-394) Bond between Bullitt, John Fowler, Charles Scott, and Horatio Turpin dated 13 December 1787.(400) Paper re: Bullitt's account of what he bought from Annie -8- MSS. Christian's estate dated 29 September 1791. A (400) Letter dated 11 July 1788 from Elizabeth B9370 Christian to Alexander Scott Bullitt re: the estates of Israel and William Christian. (403) John H. Christian mentioned his brother-in-law Bullitt in his will dated 1800.(407) In a letter dated 30 March 1786 from William Christian to Thomas Madison he mentioned that Alexander Scott Bullitt and Prissy were thinking of moving to Georgia unless the river opens up to trade soon.(414) Patrick Henry described Bullitt as "a man of honor and understanding and virtue" in a letter to William Christian dated 14 April 1786.(414) In -9- MSS. a letter dated 20 April 1845 from William C. A Bullitt to Lyman Draper re: Draper's request B9370 for information on early Kentucky settlers, Bullitt wrote of his father, Alexander. (415) Receipted bill dated 12 November 1785 of William Christian's account with Alexander Scott Bullitt. (417) William Christian named his son-in-law Alexander Scott Bullitt one of his executors in his will dated 13 March 1786.(420) There were various papers dated 1786-1802 re: the estate of William Christian that Alexander Scott Bullitt's name appeared on as the executor of Christian's estate.(421) Deed dated 10 February 1786 from William and Annie -10- MSS. Christian to Alexander Scott Bullitt and their A daughter Priscilla 1000 acres of land on B9370 Beargrass and Goose Creeks.(423) In a letter dated 19 November 1906 from Susan Bullitt Dixon to her brother Thomas W. Bullitt she mentioned their grandfather Alexander and his marriage to Priscilla Christian.(450) In a biography that Susan Bullitt Dixon wrote on her brother John C. Bullitt she included the ancestry of the Bullitt family and mentioned their grandfather Alexander.(452) Receipt dated 6 December 1815 from John Harrison to Alexander Scott Bullitt for paying his sister Frances Garrard's rent.(468) Bullitt was mentioned in his -11- MSS. daughter Helen Massie's correspondence in A letters dated 5 June and 6 July 1813.(505) Also B937c among Helen Bullitt Massie Martin Key's paper was a copy of her father Alexander's memoir written around 1815.(512) Copies of letters from Burr Powell to Bullitt dated 1805-1808 re: Powell's land matters in Kentucky that Bullitt was managing for him. (582) In a pamphlet dated 1917 of the speech delivered by John C. Doolan re: the Kentucky Constitutional Conventions of 1792 and 1799, he mentioned Bullitt as one of the principal figures in the forming of the constitutions.(586) Bullitt was mentioned in Caleb Wallace's letters to Patrick Henry re: -12- MSS. Annie Christian's estate dated 29 March 1791 A and 29 May 1791.(615) Bullitt was mentioned in B9370 Rosanna Wallace's correspondence in letters dated 26 June 1786, 23 June 1789 re: her dislike for him, and 28 April 1792.(617) There was a reference to Alexander in his grandson Thomas W. Bullitt's correspondence dated 14 February 1894.(924) Thomas W. Bullitt mentioned his great-great grandfather Alexander in a speech he gave before the Filson Club in 1980 re: Oxmoor and the Bullitts.(1317) Among William Marshall Bullitt's genealogical papers are letters and papers re: his biographical research of his great grandfather Alexander -13- MSS. including copies of Alexander's memoir written A before his death.(2353,2367-2372) Among the B937c papers re: the Oxmoor cemetery there was an inscription from Bullitt's tombstone.(3188) Among the oversize papers is a copy of the 31 January 1786 marriage bond for Alexander and Priscilla Christian, the July 1807 marriage bond for Alexander and Mary Prather, and the deed dated 15 August 1801 between Richard Dickinson and Bullitt for one-fifth of the Sturgus Station land (original).(32930vsz).
