This thrilling new mystery from the celebrated writer of ATC smash hits Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, will play at the Temple of Music and Art In Tucson from April 15 through May 5 and at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix from May 11-28. Arizona Theatre Company’s 50th anniversary season is sponsored by I. Michael and Beth Kasser. The final show of the 2016-17 season, directed by ATC Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein, finds Dr. Watson at a remote mental asylum on an island off the Scottish coast, where three recently admitted men claim to be the late detective. Each matches Holmes’s physical description and knows secrets only the real Holmes could possibly know. Watson heads to the asylum to confront the three, convinced that one of them must be the real Holmes. As he investigates, Watson is drawn into a web of intrigue, murder and surprise revolving around what really happened at Reichenbach Falls in the fateful confrontation between Holmes and the criminal mastermind, Professor Moriarty. -

THE INNOCENTS Directed by Jack Clayton UKUS, 1961, 100 mins, Cert 12A Starring Deborah Kerr, Peter Wyngarde, Michael Redgrave Martin Stephens, Pamela Franklin Opening on 13 December 2013 at BFI Southbank, IFI Dublin, QFT Belfast & selected cinemas nationwide 24 October 2013 – The second of three films to be released by the BFI in cinemas nationwide as part of GOTHIC: The DarK Heart of Film is Jack Clayton’s 1961 feature The Innocents, now widely considered to be one of the greatest of all cinematic tales of terror. This celebrated adaptation of Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898) was scripted by William Archibald (whose play of the book had been on Broadway) and Truman Capote, with additional scenes and dialogue by John Mortimer. A brilliant exercise in psychological horror, The Innocents tells of an impressionable and repressed governess, Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr), who agrees to tutor two orphaned children, Miles (Martin Stephens) and Flora (Pamela Franklin). On arrival at Bly House, she becomes convinced that the children are possessed by the perverse spirits of former governess Miss Jessel (Clytie Jessop) and her Heathclifflike lover Quint (Peter Wyngarde), who both met with mysterious deaths. The sinister atmosphere of The Innocents is carefully created – not through shocK tactics – but through its cinematography, soundtrack, and decor: Freddie Francis’ beautiful CinemaScope photography, with its eerily indistinct long shots and mysterious manifestations at the edges of the frame; Georges Auric’s eVocative and spooky soundtrack; and the grand yet decaying Bly House, with spiders crawling from dilapidated statues, ants from the eyes of dolls, and rooms coVered in dust sheets. -

JOSEPH HANREDDY [email protected] Employment History August 23, 2010 – Present: Co-Director, Fellowship in Directing and Design, Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Conceived and created a new graduate program within the Department of Theater in which four fully funded Fellowships, two in Directing and two in Design are awarded to artists with the potential to become theater innovators and leaders. The two-year program focuses on collaborative process and in addition to classroom instruction, the team of directors and designers create a series of productions within the UWM theater department and in conjunction with theaters in Milwaukee’s professional theater community. Concurrent to their work at UWM, the Fellows observe, assist leading professional directors and designers on productions in Milwaukee as well as at leading regional theaters throughout the country. On-going follow-up, career assistance and mentoring continue after the Fellows are awarded a certificate of completion from the UWM Graduate School. The first class will begin in the fall of 2011. 1993 – July 1, 2010: Artistic Director, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee, WI Founded in 1954, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater is one of the nation’s preeminent regional theaters, operating under an Actor’s Equity LORT B+ contract and annually producing three simultaneous subscription seasons in the Patty and Jay Baker Theater complex comprised of 720, 218 and 118 seat performance spaces. Additional performances include an annual tour of Wisconsin, open runs of non- subscription productions and an annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the 1400 seat Pabst Theater. All of the Milwaukee Rep’s technical support shops and administrative offices, as well as a full service bar and restaurant are housed in the company owned Baker complex. -

THE LITTLE FOXES 2016/17 SEASON We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Zelda Fichandler, Arena Stage’s co-founder and first Artistic Director. She was 91. Zelda was an extraordinary woman and brilliant theater professional who transformed American theater with her vision and artistry. From Artistic Director Molly Smith: Zelda is the mother of us all in the American theater. It was her thinking as a seminal artist and architect of the not-for-profit resident theater that imagined resident theaters creating brilliant theater in our own communities. A revolutionary idea. Her thinking and her writing have forged the way we were created and the resident nature of our movement. She is irreplaceable but lives on in every single not-for-profit theater in America — now over 1,500 strong. Her legacy stretches from coast to coast. Arthur Miller wrote in the preface to Arena’s 40th anniversary keepsake book (The Arena Adventure) that Arena had the makings of a national theater for the U.S. Without Zelda and Margo Jones and Nina Vance there would not be this robust American theater landscape. So, it was a vision like Zelda’s that could lead to a time where our vision at Arena for American work can thrive. She had a remarkable openness to new ideas and most of all, to always, always support the artist. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends who knew her best. SYDNEY STUDIES 'The face at the window': Gothic thematics in Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and The Turn of the Screw HEATHER NEILSON Whether conservatively defined as referring to a group ofnovels written by English authors between the 1760s and the 1820s - a definition which would include Frankenstein, but not Wuthering Heights or The Turn afthe Screw - or more liberally as a genre still vital and eVOlving, the Gothic novel is characterized by several established features. The predominant characteristic is an emphasis on fear: stories in the Gothic mode are overtly affective in intent, concerned with eliciting as well as portraying extremes of emotion. Also generally found in the Gothic novel are a prominent use of the supernatural (even when all phenomena have been logically explained away by the end of the tale), an archaic setting, the depiction of violence and passion, and stereotyped characters. It is a commonplace that the Gothic is essentially a middle class genre, having first emerged in a period of instability in personal, social and political realities. In the Gothic novel there is a precarious oscillation between anxiety and reassurance, as regards the alien or disruptive, a sustained tension between the expression and repression ofirrational or unwholesome desires. While Gothic fiction seems ostensibly to uphold prevailing social structures and mores, implicit in the genre is a social critique, which may be directed, as for example in the three novels under discussion, against public institutions such as the Church or the Law, whose efficacy is implicitly questioned. There is a correlative exploration ofthe issue ofpersonal responsibility in the domestic sphere. -
