[email protected] Resumen Este trabajo se centra en la recepción de la música de Richard Wagner, limitado a un marco geográfico específico, el de la ciudad de Nueva York –en concreto el distrito alemán de la ciudad, conocido como Kleindeutschland– y temporal, el comprendido entre la primera ejecución documentada de una obra de Wagner en la ciudad, en 1854, y la definitiva entronización del compositor como legítimo representante de la tradición musical alemana a partir del estreno de Lohengrin en la Academy of Music, en 1874. Se destaca la labor de promoción a cargo de los emigrantes alemanes, en su papel de mediadores, en los años 50 y 60 del siglo XIX, una labor fundamental ya que gracias a ella germinó la semilla del culto a Wagner que eclosionaría durante la Gilded Age, la “Edad dorada” del desarrollo económico y artístico finisecular, que afectó a todo el país pero de manera especial a Nueva York. Asimismo, se incluye una aproximación a la recepción en la crítica periodística neoyorquina durante el periodo en cuestión. National Conference Performing Choirs 20152015 ACDA FestivalFestival ChoirChoir UniversityUniversity ofof Utah A Cappella Choir Thursday 8:00 pm - 9:45 pm Abravanel Hall (Blue Track) Friday 8:00 pm - 9:45 pm Abravanel Hall (Gold Track) The 2015 ACDA Festival Choir includes the Utah Sym- phony Chorus, Utah Chamber Artists, the University of Utah Chamber Choir, and the University of Utah A Cappella Choir conducted by Barlow Bradford. The Utah Symphony is con- ducted by Thierry Fischer. Founded in 1962, the A Cappella Choir offers singers the opportunity to perform works for larger choirs and to fi ne- tune the art of choral singing through exposure to music from Utah Chamber Artists the Renaissance through the twenty-fi rst century. Choir mem- bers hone musicianship skills such as rhythm, sight-reading, and the understanding of complex scores. They develop an understanding of the intricacies of vocal production, includ- ing pitch, and how to blend individual voices together into a unifi ed, beautiful sound. In recent years, the A Cappella Choir has become a standard of excellence in student singing in the State of Utah. Last fall, they sang Mozart’s Trinity Mass with the Utah Symphony and the Utah Symphony Chorus under the direction of Thierry Fischer. This renewed a tradition of collaboration between the choirs of the University of Utah and the Utah Symphony, and their outstanding performance resulted in invitations for return engagements in 2015. Utah Chamber Artists was established in 1991 by Barlow University of Utah Chamber Choir Bradford and James Lee Sorenson. The ensemble comprises forty singers and forty players who create a balance and so- nority rarely found in a combined choir and orchestra. -

2020 SEASON AT-A-GLANCE In the 2020 Tanglewood season, BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons leads twelve BSO concerts including Act III of Wagner’s Tannhäuser (7/11) and three programs showcasing Paul Lewis in all five Beethoven piano concertos (7/17–19). During his 15-year tenure, he has conducted the Boston Pops in more than 1,200 concerts and introduced the innovative JazzFest and EdgeFest series, which feature the Pops performing with some of today’s most prominent jazz and indie artists including Chick Corea, Dianne Reeves, Guster, My Morning Jacket, and Natalie Merchant. The 2009 New Year’s Eve concert featured special guest Amanda Palmer. Reflecting a passionate commitment to music of the Broadway stage, Mr. Lockhart has led the Boston Pops in collaboration with the Tanglewood Music Center in concert performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, as well as musical reviews of the works of Sondheim and Bernstein, performed both at Symphony Hall in Boston and at Tanglewood. He has also spearheaded collaborations with students from the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, and visits music programs in the Boston Public Schools whenever his schedule allows. Mr. Lockhart has been the driving force behind the success of PopSearch and the Boston Pops High School Sing-Off, performing competitions that have offered talented singers throughout Massachusetts and the United States an opportunity to perform with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall and the July 4 concert on Boston’s Charles River Esplanade. -

1 Max Siegling 16.05.2011 Professor Kasinitz Germans in New York City: From the Revolutions of 1848 to World War I The experience of German immigrants in New York City in the 1800s was one of fruitful struggle, from the coalescing of a German American community after the revolutions of 1848 brought many Germans into New York, to the height of German American culture pre-World War I, with its abundance of theater troupes, opera companies, cultural societies, and journals. It was at this very height, when German Americans had moved upward socially and economically in American society, that anti-German sentiment in WWI led to the complete assimilation of an ethnic group which had earlier maintained a high ethnic presence. This high ethnic presence was enabled by the creation of a German American culture – not fully German anymore, but neither completely American – with cultural products – art, music, journals – that depicted the German American experience in New York. This German American experience was marked by a longing for the homeland, regional disunity and mixing, class conflict, and an integration into and ascent in American society. These cultural products were split between a “high” and “low” culture (in terms of upper and lower classes); where the high culture sought to promote German art of the homeland, particularly Wagner, the low culture, often through humor – only sometimes sardonic – sought to express the experience of Germans in New York with new art, art made by and for Germans in New York. There was always a German presence in New York, but it was only after the failed revolutions of 1848 in Europe that the German community really began to coalesce in New York, into a neighborhood known as Klein Deutschland (Little Germany – now the East 2 Village and parts of the Lower East Side). -
