LEAP (SCIO)

Who we are

LEAP are a community lead organisation supporting local people to improve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint across all aspects of their lives. We help local residents save energy and money, provide free impartial advice on energy efficiency in the home, we work in schools, with young people, we develop low carbon transport initiatives, including operating a car club in 3 villages. Food initiatives operate in a number of the communities we support, including a local buying cooperative and growing group.

LEAP Aims

LEAP has been operating since early 2010, initially through another community group; LMEG ( Millennium Events Group). In 2013 LEAP set up independently as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), Charity Number SCO44019. LEAPs aims and objectives are summarised in its constitution: ● to advance environmental protection and improvement by promoting, empowering and enabling sustainable communities through energy conservation and efficiency, encouragement of the usage of natural resources and the reduction of carbon use, pollution and waste; ● to advance education by raising awareness and encouraging communities to consider their impact on the environment; ● to encourage community participation in contributing to environmental improvement and ensure the services offered meet the needs of the community, and help to provide new skills and perspectives. ● the area within which the organisation shall operate shall be the villages of Lochwinnoch, , and , and the surrounding areas.

LEAP Work

LEAP have operated to date through funder income. The Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) has provided the main source of funding since inception. Funding secured for period 1st April 2015 to 31st March 2016 will enable LEAP to deliver the Calder and Gryffe Community Project, a broad ranging energy efficiency project in the villages of Houston, Crosslees, Brookfield, Bridge of Weir, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch, in Renfrewshire. This project will develop the work LEAP have undertaken to date in the areas of home energy efficiency, education, transport, food, and recycling. CCF have also funded a second project over the same period working with Young People; Yep! a Youth Engagement Project in the villages of Bridge of Weir, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch.

In addition to meeting CCF outcomes, LEAP has secured funding from Car Plus for the ongoing development of a Sustainable Rural Car Club. We continue to work in partnership with Renfrewshire Council on a number of pilot energy efficiency initiatives and recently secured funding from Energy Action to enable us to ensure energy efficiency changes we identify in homes can be made. In particular circumstances, LEAP can support people to ‘Make it Happen’ through EAS funding, providing materials and skills for recommended draught proofing measures to be put in place. As part of LEAP’s efforts to become less reliant on funder income LEAP has opened an ECO shop in both Drop in Centres (Bridge of Weir and Lochwinnoch).

LEAP Team

The Depute Project Manager will support the Project Manager who is the link between the LEAP Board of Trustees, a voluntary group made up of individuals from within the local communities in which we operate, and the team of contractors who together delivery the project outcomes established with the various funders. It is anticipated that there will be further opportunities to engage with volunteers.

LEAP Future

Recent community consultation and a Social Return on Investment (SROI) Assessment have clearly established strong support for the work LEAP undertake within the community.
