Communication in Overwatch Christal Toh (U1830172L) 1
Communication in Overwatch Christal Toh (U1830172L) 1. Introduction Overwatch is a multiplayer First Person Shooter (FPS) online that pits players against other players using in-game characters known as “heroes”, and is developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Overwatch is an extremely popular game, garnering at least 40 million new players since its launch in 2016 (Gough, 2019). Games are predominantly used for entertainment, but can also be used for social functions and have the ability to deeply impact the language used in the game, which will be discussed further in the essay. The game has two different communication systems that can be used on its own or simultaneously by players. The first communication system is the game’s messaging system, or in other words the “chat box”. It largely resembles messaging systems found in SNS (Social Networking Systems) and is text-based (Figure 1). The second communication system is the game’s in-built voice system. This resembles phone conversations because players can have voiced conversations with one another without being able to see each other’s faces, and is speech-based (Figure 2). Players can select their desired target addressee from a large pool of audiences, but most use only three of them - group, team and chat. Figure 1: Chat box Figure 2: Voice system 2. Relevant Literature A study was conducted to investigate the reasons for the attraction of gaming and how social activities can be influenced by online gaming (Wu, Wang & Tsai, 2010). Based on the study’s results, it was concluded that players have frequent social interactions with others and exchange information with one another using the game’s systems. -
What Makes a Good Loser? an Ethnographic Study of Toxic Behaviors in Competitive Multiplayer Games
What makes a good loser? An Ethnographic Study of Toxic Behaviors in Competitive Multiplayer Games Azul Romo Flores Supervisor: Isabel Löfgren Södertörn’s University | School of Culture and Education Master’s Dissertation, 30 credits | Spring 2020 Master’s programme in Media, Communication and Cultural Analysis To Bruno González Vázquez, thank you for your endless support. 1 Abstract Over the past decades, the scholarly discourse of violent video games as a possible influence for aggressive behaviors has gained much attention, primarily relying on the content of such games This study aims to explore the environment of competitive multiplayer gaming in terms of technicality (e.g. game mechanics), social interactions within a video game, and additional resources outside of the game as possible influential factors for toxic behaviors in competitive multiplayer games. Bourdieusian social theory is applied to gain a better understanding of the relationship between agents (players) and the field (competitive gaming) and the relevance of gaming capital. This study is based on a digital ethnographic approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of the gaming environment, and reports on semi-structured online interviews with 14 participants aged between 17-40, to gain insight on players’ perception and responses towards toxic behaviors in competitive games. This study proposes a spectrum of toxic behaviors in competitive multiplayer games, in which actions may be distinguished based on the form of expression (eg. verbal, physical or in-game). Primary findings suggest there may be a causal relationship between a player’s knowledge of a game and their conveyance of toxicity, regardless of age and gender. -

What's the Hype About Esports? a Qualitative Study About Esports Consumer Motivation
What's the hype about esports? Nyckelord: esport, åskådare, Uses and Gratifications, konsumentmotivation, kvalitativ studie, intervju Abstract Esports as a spectator sport has gained a significant audience during the last decade, attracting almost half a billion viewers worldwide and input from large well-known companies, but the reason as to why people watch esports is still not well studied. -
