Houston Grand Opera Unveils Enchanting New Production of Hansel and Gretel by Renowned Puppeteer Basil Twist Perfect Holiday Treat for the Whole Family Opens December 1, 2006 Houston, TX (October 5, 2006) – This holiday season, Houston Grand Opera (HGO) stages a spectacular new production of Humperdinck’s beloved fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel featuring artists from the HGO Studio and members of the HGO Orchestra and Children’s Chorus. Eleven public performances, December 1 – 23, will offer ample opportunities for Houstonians to enjoy this holiday treat. The Production is directed and designed by America’s premier puppeteer Basil Twist, whose works have dazzled audiences across the continent (New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Montreal) and in Europe (France, London and Munich). Called “true magic” by the New York Times, Twist’s work fuses music and puppetry into spellbinding theatrical experiences. His largest puppet for Hansel and Gretel will be a giant witch built by the Jim Henson Company, and Twist will build the remaining puppets himself, including several marionettes and bunraku puppets. Hansel and Gretel showcases artists from the internationally acclaimed HGO Studio, one of the world’s finest programs for opera’s future stars. Irish mezzo-soprano Fiona Murphy and American soprano Rebekah Camm star as the brother and sister who get lost in the woods and are captured by the Witch, sung by American baritone Liam Bonner. It’s astounding, time is fleeting and The Rocky Horror Show is back. We’re starting another sensation and we’re definitely not under sedation! A new Australian production of the much-loved Rocky Horror Show will open Sydney’s brand new Star Theatre in February 2008 and tickets go on sale on Monday 27 August. Co-Producer Paul Dainty, Chairman of Dainty Consolidated Entertainment says: “It’s a thrill to be bringing The Rocky Horror Show to the Australian stage. It is a timeless piece of theatre that has spanned decades. I know Australian audiences – both new and old fans – will love this show which stars some of our finest talents.” “This fresh production is an exciting new take on the world’s favourite rock ‘n’ roll musical. It brings together the hottest cast I have seen for a long time” commented co-producer Howard Panter, Joint Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director of the UK’s Ambassador Theatre Group. The Rocky Horror Show is an institution and one of theatre’s most endearing and outrageously fun shows. Its well-known and much-loved storyline goes something like this: Squeaky-clean sweethearts Brad and Janet knock on the door of an eerie house to use the phone after their car breaks down in the rain on a dark and stormy night.

  • Character Profiles
CHARACTER PROFILES Jemma Rix on playing Elphaba: “Elphaba was born with green skin and because of this she is unfairly treated and judged, even by her own father. This causes her to be very sensitive about her skin colour. She is super intelligent, has a dry sense of humour and has so much care and compassion for everything and everyone in the land of Oz. When Elphaba discovers that what she thought was a quirk is actually a magical talent, she has the opportunity to meet The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz. However, she soon finds out he is creating segregation in the land and she does not want to be a part of it. She is then cast out of society and labelled “The WICKED Witch Of The West”. Even though she was standing up for what is right, the details are twisted so that the Ozians believe she is truly “WICKED”. Glinda is the only friend she ever had and through this friendship they both learn from each other and change for the better. Playing this role is a dream come true. With such a beautiful story and stunning music, I feel very lucky to be part of this amazing show.” Suzie Mathers on playing Galinda/Glinda: Glinda is such a wonderful character to play with so many dimensions. She goes on such a huge journey throughout the show and becomes a better person for the lessons she learns. In the beginning Glinda is confident, forward and self involved. She approaches life the only way she knows how. Privileged and entitled.
