PS HIM fkf *1(5 /«rA W/’hen we think of the heroism of the Fighting Services, the Mercantile Marine, the Fire fighters, the A.R.P., the many Corps of Women’s Auxiliary Services, Doctors, Nurses and staffs of Hospitals, and, above all, the heroism and spirit of self-sacrifice shown by the women and children of cities, towns and hamlets which have been bombed incessantly by the Nazi murderers, it may sound Raymond Massey (right) and not only presumptuous but downright swank to ” suggest that films Eric Postman in 49th the have played any really important part in the War. I think to escape from Canada to the we may divide, roughly, the part the films have played into United States but is out- manoeuvred by Raymond showing us, firstly, what Nazism really means and Massey. what we are fighting against, and, secondly, how we are fighting the greatest menace to Civilisation since Democracy was established as the keystone of the arch of Civilisation. Democracy is easily explained. The great Lincoln. President of the first really United States of America, described it as Govern- ment of the People, by the People, for the People. The emblem of Republican France was Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. In England, and later in the British Empire, the meaning was Freedom of speech and action, Una Merkel and W. C. Fields in so long as it did not interfere with the " The Bank Detective.” Freedom of others.

  • By Doug Mcclelland (From Film Fan Monthly, October 1973)
by Doug McClelland (from Film Fan Monthly, October 1973) I have written about many film actresses in my time, but never about one as anonymous as Mary Field . I also have never written about one who has been in more movies. It is a testament to the overflow wealth of the screen's peak years that in preparing this article (with not inconsiderable t research resources) I was unable to unearth any biographical material on Field, an accomplished character woman in probably a couple of hundred films from the 1930s to the 1960s. Obviously taken for granted not only by writers but by studios and fans, Field just may have been the medium's most ubiquitous female during that epoch—excepting, of course, "Queen of the Hollywood Extras" Bess Flowers, inevitable and distinguished in her feather-cut fringes . Field, however, was an actress, and while her parts sometimes were so small she went unbilled, they were polished with a rare skill that has not tarnished. The slender Field, of indeterminate age and as plain-featured as her name, had a rather parroty nose and a none-too-prominent chin, with dark hair plainly coiffed . Understandably, prim 1 types became her specialty, yet she brought to all such immac- ulate diction and Stanislaysky-like immersion—without sacrificing Mar Field 153 the parade of Irish servants dispatched by father William Powell's bluster; in Where There's Life (1947), the Bob Hope–frightened hotel help who shrieked "Love fiend!" ; and in Top o' the Morning (1949), the Irish maid who sang a duet with Bing Crosby.

,^'.' The Museum of Modern Art „„ ,^8 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 245-3200 Cable: Modernart FOR RELEASE ! Thursday, December 5, I968 h5 YEARS OF COLUMBIA PICTURES OBSERVED The Museum of Modern Art will present, from December 5th to January 6th, a sampling of representative pictures from Columbia Pictures, currently celebrating its forty-fifth anniversary. Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Museum's Department of Film, in announcing the twenty-nine feature films selected, commented, "I am amazed not only at the variety of films - from two-reeler comedies to three-hour color spectacles - but also at the number of key American directors who at one time or another contributed their creative efforts to the development of a major Hollywood studio." He pointed out the difficulty of making a choice since many directors merited a complete retrospective. Columbia Pictures has had on its roster of directors Frank Capra, John Ford, Gregory La Cava, Howard Hawks, Ben Hecht, Max Ophuls, Fred Zinnemann, and many others who have made film history. Those pictures on the program which may evoke a certain nostalgia include: "The Bitter Tea of General Yen" (1933), with Barbara Stanwyck, directed by Frank Capra; "His Girl Friday" (19i+0), a remake of "The Front Page," directed by Howard Hawks, with Gary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and Ralph Bellamy; "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941), with Robert Montgomery and Evelyn Keyes; "Gilda" (191+6), a Charles Vidor film starring Rita Hayworth; "The Jolson Story" (19^+6), directed by Alfred E. Green, with Larry Parks; "From Here to Eternity"(I953), the Fred Zinnemann film with Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra; and "Lawrence of Arabia" (I962), the David Lean film with Peter 0'Toole, Sir Alec Guinness, and Anthony Quinn.
