Two Bodies, One Soul Glimpses of the Alps and the Himalayas 23-26 June 2016 / Convention Foyer, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi About the cause This exhibition of mountain photography opens with the launch of 'Two Bodies, One Soul: Glimpses of the Alps and the Himalayas', a limited edition fundraising series for the Children's National Institute (childrennationalinstitute.org), a home for abandoned and orphaned children established in 1947 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, at his former residence, Swaraj Bhawan, in the northern Indian city of Allahabad. Fifty percent of any sale proceeds will go to the Children's National Institute. Any profit that still remains after all expenses have been paid will go to the artist's own research project on reducing disaster risk and supporting community adaptation to extremes in changing Himalayan environments. The project, titled ‘Understanding and enhancing the adaptation and resilience of remote high-mountain communities to hydrometeorological extremes and related geophysical hazards in a changing climate’ is supported by the University of Sheffield, UK, and the Dudley Stamp Memorial Award (Royal Geographical Society with IBG). The project involves extended fieldwork in the High Himalayas. The artist's new Himalayan music album, 'Poshpoozaa and other ancient prayers from a Kashmiri household' will also be launched at the show. The first 100 signed album CDs will be available at the venue. Any sale proceeds will go to the Children's National Institute or the aforementioned Himalayan disaster risk reduction research project. About the artist Vaibhav Kaul is a young Himalayan geographer, mountaineer, photographer, painter, singer, poet and nostalgist. -

The First Ascent of the Trifthorn
• THE FIRST ASCENT OF THE TRIFTHORN THE FIRST ASCENT OF THE TRIFTHORN BY D. F. 0. DANGAR AND T. S. BLAKENEY HE history of the Trifthorn provides one of the minor puzzles of Alpine history. At various times three different people have been credited with making the first ascent. In the first edition of Studer's Ueber Eis und Schnee, vol. iv., p. 290, it is stated that so far as is knovvn the summit \iVas reached for the first time in I872 by' Herr Beraneck, vater.'1 At the end of the third volume, however, is a list of peaks in the Svv-iss Alps exceeding 3,250 metres in height with the names of those who made the first ascent in each case. Peak No. 41 (Valais) is the 'Trifthorn (Zermatt) 3737 meter. 12261 Eng. Fuss ' ; here, the first ascent is said to have bee11 made in I 866 by A. von Wattenwyl, a member of the Diablerets Section of the Swiss Alpine Club... The Conway-Coolidge. Pennine Guide, published in 18go, attributes the ascent to ' M. Beraneck in 1872,' vvith a reference to the Jahrbuch S.A.C., viii, p. 58o. 2 We have been unable to find any evidence in support of von Wattenwyl 's ascent in I 866. The second volume of the second edition of Studer's work was publisred in I 8g8 and on p. 503 the Trifthorn is stated to have been first climbed by M. G. Beraneck in I 872 from the Triftjoch ; no other information about the ascent \vas available. -

Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2010 with funding from Boston Library Consortium Member Libraries http://www.archive.org/details/pioneersofalps1859cunn PREFACE Tn the pages now presented to the reader will be found a collection of sketches of the lives and of portraits of those who first conquered the great peaks, opened out the mountain highways, and who may fairly be said to have "made possible that sport which so many of us enjoy every year in the Alps —men who are, or have been in their day, undoubtedly great guides. The present is a singularly favourable time for forming such a collection, as in addition to the portraits of those guides who have perfected the Art of Climbing, and who are still among us, we are able to obtain the likenesses of many of those who took the largest share in the work of exploring the Alps after the commencement of systematic mountaineering. The first point on which a decision was required was as to the mountain centres to which the selection of guides should be limited. -

Rothorn De Zinal, 4221 M Arête SE, Voie Normale∗
