But yeah, that was like a very special time of my life, and as I started to watch it I just got, like, chills. HRISHI: You had a Proustian moment? JOSH: Yeah, exactly. HRISHI: You were transported. That’s great. In this episode, of course, we’re talking about “Game On.” It’s episode six from season four. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin and Paul Redford. It was directed by Alex Graves, and it first aired on October 30, 2002. HRISHI: This episode is a famous one because it features President Bartlet debating Governor Ritchie. There’s also some stuff about Qumar, there’s some stuff about Toby and Andy, but the real headline is that baby-faced Joshua Malina makes his first appearance as Will Bailey, who’s running the Horton Wilde campaign from a mattress store in Newport Beach. -

V práci jsem užil metodu zakotvené teorie. Pomocí jejích postup ů jsem vytvo řil osm tematických kategorií užitých stereotyp ů. Ty jsem pak mezi ob ěma seriály komparoval. Krom ě samotného obsahu stereotypního zobrazování má práce zkoumala jednotlivé strategie jejich užití. They also include the social value and they can be an instrument of power. My theses investigates their using in American animated series Futurama and Ugly Americans. -

(FMAB 107C) Course Description: Since it first appeared as a series of short animations on the Tracy Ullman Show (1987), The Simpsons has served as a running commentary on the lives and attitudes of the American people. Its subject matter has touched upon the fabric of American society regarding politics, religion, ethnic identity, disability, sexuality and gender-based issues. Also, this innovative program has delved into the realm of the personal; issues of family, employment, addiction, and death are familiar material found in the program’s narrative. Additionally, The Simpsons has spawned a series of animated programs (South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, Rick and Morty etc.) that have also been instrumental in this reflective look on the world in which we live. The abstraction of animation provides a safe emotional distance from these difficult topics and affords these programs a venue to reflect the true nature of modern American society. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to provide the intellectual basis for a deeper understanding of The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, and Rick and Morty within the context of the culture that nurtured these animations. The student will, upon successful completion of this course: (1) recognize cultural references within these animations. (2) correlate narratives to the issues about society that are raised. -

By Eric Alvarez Abstract Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night focuses on the events that unfold in the newsroom of a nightly sports highlight show. The impulse of the series stems from the relationships amongst the show’s two anchors, three producers and its managing editor. As individuals, the journalists are smart, talented and dedicated in their professional lives. Yet, despite their capabilities and professionalism, each echoes characteristics and faces problems similar to those of journalists in classic popular culture. They often put the job over their personal lives and struggle when faced with the consequences. But in the end, they always tend to band together as a newsroom family. * * * “Five minutes to air. First team in the studio.1” The voice echoes through the newsroom at 10:55 p.m. It is the nightly wake-up call for the Sports Night team. Journalists both in front of the camera and in the control room scramble as the clock ticks toward show time. And then it starts. The one thing that gives the journalists a home, a family and a sense of accomplishment. BRIDGERTON SERIES AS A PARADIGM OF FEMINIST CO-CREATION OF THE TELEVISION AUDIENCE Graciela Padilla-Castillo, Aysel Zeynalova, Asunción Bernárdez-Rodal Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] INTRODUCTION Bridgerton is a television series created by Chris Van Dusen, produced by Chris Van Dusen, Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes. Its first season premiered worldwide on 25 December 2020 on Netflix. The first season has eight episodes, as is the norm for all Netflix series, and a second season is already confirmed thanks to the fact that it racked up 82 million views in the first month of its premiere (Zorrilla, 2021). If it follows the structure of the collection of novels written by Julia Quinn, from which the original idea stems, the series could have up to 8 seasons, as there are 8 different books, each centred on the 8 Bridgerton children. The action takes place in London, around 1810, among the high society parties. It begins with the presentation of the young brides to the Queen of England and the appearance of a gossip bulletin, signed by an anonymous author: Lady Whistledown. The plot, which at first sight does not seem very original, is adapted to our reality, offering original and necessary touches that form the basis of this investigation. On-screen, Shonda Rhimes innovates once again with a choral and multiracial cast, which she has previously imposed on all her series and which made her stand out especially from the first season of Grey's Anatomy onwards. Rhimes proposes blind casting so that actors and actresses are not chosen on the basis of physical characteristics imposed by the script. -

HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. This is Part 2 of our two-part episode discussing the two- part episode "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen.” Coming up later, we’ll be joined by Bradley Whitford, who played Deputy Chief of Staff Joshua Lyman. But first, we’re going to start the episode off with an interview with Michael O’Neill. JOSH: Of course, on The West Wing , Michael plays one of our favorite recurring characters, Special Agent Ron Butterfield, the head of President Bartlet’s Secret Service protection detail. Hey Michael. MICHAEL: Hey Josh, Hrishi. How are you guys? JOSH: Oh man, it’s good to talk to you. HRISHI: Yeah, thanks so much for joining us. JOSH: We’ve been enjoying you all season. We’ve thus far discussed only the first season of The West Wing . I guess I’m curious, to start, to know... how did you get involved in the show? MICHAEL: I went in to audition for the head of the president’s detail of the Secret Service. Chris Misiano was directing that episode, and Aaron wasn’t either inclined or able to make that particular audition and I screwed it up the first time. You know, you didn’t fool around with Aaron’s language. It was really beautifully drawn but it was very, very specific, and I stumbled over it. -

Today we're talking about episode 7 of season 4, "Election Night". JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, the story’s by David Gerken and David Handelman, David Handelman, a friend of mine, and it was directed by Lesli Linka Glatter. Terrific director with whom I've worked on more than one occasion. It first aired, oh, all I wrote down was that it first aired, and you know what? I feel like that's good enough. [Hrishi laughing] JOSH: You don't care when it aired. It aired in 2002. HRISHI: No, I like knowing that it aired on November 6, 2002, which I think is a nice detail because it lines up with actual election week. JOSH: Indeed. HRISHI: Here's the synopsis from Warner Brothers. The official synopsis. I like this because of the way they talk about you. JOSH: Oh. HRISHI: Well, your character. "On election day Bartlet and his staff begin counting eXit poll votes across the country. In a conservative California congressional district the results have important implications for Sam and a maverick democratic campaign manager, Will Bailey." JOSH: I like the sound of that. HRISHI: "Meanwhile Donna meets an intriguing Navy Lt. Commander, Jack Reese, who has been transferred to the White House as Deputy Military Aide." JOSH: Played by Jack Nicholson impersonator, Christian Slater. Just kidding. If you're listening you're your own man and you're a terrific actor. -

We are thrilled to now share Stephen Adly Guirgis’ funny and powerful Between Riverside and Crazy. These back-to-back prize winners demonstrate how the Fountain aims to always provide you with theatre of the highest quality on our intimate stage. Stephen Adly Guirgis is widely considered to be one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged from New York theater in decades. This acclaimed and award-winning playwright humbly admits, “A play is not a cure for cancer. The best play in the world is not going to make peace. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 © Copyright by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 by Alice Elizabeth Royer Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor William McDonald, Co-Chair Professor Johanna R Drucker, Co-Chair This dissertation examines American films, miniseries, and television shows that center on the democratic process, mobilizing it in the service of stories that both provide intense narrative and visual pleasures, and offer satisfaction in the form of apparent knowledge gained about the inner workings of electoral politics in the United States; these media texts are here theorized as “democracy porn.” Significantly, democracy porn emerges alongside neoliberalism, and its proliferation mirrors that ideology’s meteoric rise to prominence. As such, the dissertation considers texts made since the advent of neoliberalism in 1973, and up to the US presidential election of 2016, which marks a major shift in the meanings and values associated with democracy porn. Through historical, textual, and discourse analysis drawing on critical theories of affect, citizenship, and neoliberalism, the dissertation interrogates the complex ways in which democracy porn is constructed and functions within and surrounding moving image ii texts. The project thus tracks the ways neoliberal ideology manifests in the media texts in question, as well as how the consumption of these texts impacts viewers’ understandings of their own citizenship within a democracy increasingly steered by neoliberal principles.
