By referring to us as His “children,” G-d let Friday, 11 Tishrei it be known that He would never sever His relationship with us, and that we can never sever Healing the World our relationship with Him – just as parents can [G-d said,] “I strike and I heal.” Deuteronomy 32:39 never sever themselves from their children, and children can never sever themselves from their The Hebrew word for “strike” (machatzti) is related parents. The difficulty we experience in might seem to threaten it. trying to sense the spiritual in what we do or in trying to apply our inspiration to our daily lives is It is therefore pointless to try to hide or flee from the true definition of exile. In the Messianic era, this relationship, and senseless to think that it G-d will heal this split. The dividing barrier will be can ever be forfeited. G-d’s love for us is infinitely transformed into a connecting doorway, enabling stronger than anything we may have done to the spiritual and the material to once again unite. weaken it. This is how evil will be eliminated in the future: G-d will be so revealed that evil – the denial of G-d – will simply cease to exist.

It follows that the way to hasten the Messianic era is by taking care to refine even the lowest aspects of our material lives, infusing them with as much Thursday, 12 Tishrei spirituality as we can. By living “messianic” lives in this way, we are doing our part to nullify the exile. When the Messiah Comes [Moses addressed the non-Jews:] “Nations! Praise [G-d] for His people, [the Jews]!” Deuteronomy 32:43

When the Messianic Redemption occurs, truth will no longer be so easily confused with falsehood. It will become clear to the whole world why G-d chose the Jews to be His people. Our role as the priests and teachers of humanity will finally be universally acknowledged, and our redeeming contributions to human civilization will be fully appreciated. The nations of the world will then do whatever they can to aid the Jews in their Divine mission of bringing the world to its fullest potential.

Educating the world to appreciate not only G-d but G-d’s people is therefore an integral part of preparing the world for the Redemption and hastening it.

n parshat Vayelech, we read that Moses commanded the tribe of Levi, Iwho carry the Ark, to “Take this Torah scroll and place it alongside the [tablets of the Ten Commandments that were in the] Ark of the Covenant.”

The Midrash tells us that Moses wrote thirteen Torahs, one for each of the 12 tribes, and the 13th was to be put into the Ark of the Covenant, and if an issue arises with any of the Torahs, they would be able to check the 13th Torah to clarify the issue.

21 THE TEN DAYS OF TESHUVAH

Day One The first ten days of the Jewish calendar are known as “the ten days of teshuvah.” These are days for soul-searching, repentance and return (teshuvah) to G-d. Citing the verse, “Seek G-d Mailchimp bannerwhen He may be found, call upon Him when He is near,” the states: “these are the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.” Actually, this ten-day period includes Rosh Hashanah, which occurs on the first and second days of the month of Tishrei, as well as Yom Kippur, which falls on the tenth of Tishrei. This means that while Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are themselves days of teshuvah, they each embody a principle that goes beyond Teshuvah is a soul’s experience of the agony of disconnection the concept of “return”: the essence of Rosh Hashanah and its channeling of this agony to drive its return to G-d. precedes teshuvah, while the essence of Yom Kippur Thus, our sages have said that through teshuvah, “sins are supersedes teshuvah. There are three fundamental aspects to our bond with G-d and the The Singular Day manner in which it is expressed in our lives. But there exists an even deeper unity between a Jew and G-d. The mitzvah relates to the level on which the On the most basic level, we achieve connection with finite and mortal nature of man sets him apart from the G-d through our observance of the mitzvot, the divine divine—a nature that the mitzvah comes to overcome. The concept of a “divine commandment” has meaning only after one has accepted G-d as the authority over one’s life; a transgression is a transgression only because it violates a divine command, and teshuvah is spurred by transgression.

Thus, the ten days of teshuvah are defined as the “days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.” They are preceded by “Rosh Hashanah” (the concept, not the days, which are themselves part of the ten), since our submission to the divine sovereignty is the basis for the “ten days of teshuvah.” And they are superseded by “Yom Kippur,” since Yom Kippur, in addition to itself being a day of teshuvah, is the ultimate realization of the soul’s quintessential oneness with G-d. 23 HALACHA OF THE WEEK
