ABSTRACT Going Anywhere: Stories by David Armstrong Dr. Maile Chapman, Examination Committee Chair Professor of English University of Nevada, Las Vegas Growing up in a rural, Appalachian town, I recognized that tight-lipped doggedness was a mark of strength. As a writer, I became intrigued by how I might portray people whose defining attributes were silence, how essentially to give voice to voicelessness. The answer for me was to begin exploring place as an origin of inner expression. The stories in Going Anywhere track people moving through the landscape, their journeys, often destinationless, traversing the space between life’s dark realities and the fantastic leaps of faith we all make to survive. A father seeks out a way to deal with the unexpected death of his daughter, a heroin-addicted mother kidnaps her own son to teach him about beauty, expectant parents wrestle with their own doubt, and a boy learns how to support his mother in the wake of a divorce. But beneath the human struggle is a prevailing sense of wonder—a public pool with miraculous properties, a church that requires its parishioners to carry the plasticized hands of corpses, a dog at a gas station with insight about a man’s marital indiscretions, and a worldwide epidemic of ghosts. Connecting them all is the journey: people traveling in search of solace, insight, clarity, and purpose, gathering up their own lives into discernible pieces of fact and conviction in the hopes of getting it right. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Writing is like chasing ghosts with a butterfly net. It’s a feeble attempt to capture something ephemeral and, dare I say it, magical—something made up of memory and meaning—using only that blunt instrument, the written word. In thanking those who need thanking, I’m certain I’ll be just as imperfect and forgetful as in all my endeavors. There are many beyond the few mentioned here who had a hand in supporting me and creating this book. For their emotional and intellectual nourishment, I’m forever grateful. That said, thank you to my mother and father, Don and Karen Armstrong. Thank you also to Drew and Katie Armstrong, Jenny Moore, Rosemary Yates, Daniel Armstrong, Richard Wiley, Maile Chapman, Doug Unger, Carol Harter, Damien and Ashley Cowger, Dustin Faulstick, Jolynn Baldwin, Colby Gillette, David Ballenger, Kyle Hildebrandt, Darrell Spencer, Joan Connor, Eric and Kristin LeMay, Darlene and John Unrue, Loreen L. Giese, Andrew Malan Milward, Paul Sacksteder, Michael Van Auken, and James Miranda. For their editorial support, thank you to Lev Raphael, Lisa Graziano, Chris Offutt, Matt Bell, Amelia Gray, Amber Sparks, Tom Dibblee, Michael Kardos, Bryan Tomasovich, Matt Sailor, and Kellen Shaver. Also a special thanks to a woman whose commanding knowledge of the mechanics of language I didn’t fully appreciate until my adult life—Mary Jean Rieder, my high school Latin teacher. And finally, a thanks beyond thanks to my wife, Melinda, who is everything and everything and more than everything always. iv DEDICATION For M, who is my home, and P, who is still a part of it v TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT................................................................................................................iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS...........................................................................................iv DEDICATION..............................................................................................................v INTRODUCTION........................................................................................................1 EPIGRAPH...................................................................................................................4 STORY 1 TAKE CARE........................................................................................5 STORY 2 THEIR OWN RESOLUTION............................................................13 STORY 3 HEAR IT.............................................................................................42 STORY 4 COURIER...........................................................................................50 STORY 5 BETHESDA........................................................................................75 STORY 6 PATIENCE IS A FRUIT....................................................................92 STORY 7 A DIFFERENT-SIZED US..............................................................110 STORY 8 BUTTERSCOTCH...........................................................................125 STORY 9 SNAPSHOT OF DOMESTIC SCENE WITH RESCUE DOG.......150 STORY 10 STRAW MAN..................................................................................167 STORY 11 MURRAY........................................................................................189 STORY 12 FIFTY...............................................................................................224 BIBLIOGRAPHY....................................................................................................234 CURRICULUM VITAE..........................................................................................235 vi INTRODUCTION This introduction is meant to provide a cohesive account of the systemic pattern emergent in what might be referred to as Hegelian sublation, a series of interdependent, simultaneously disparate but relationally linked ideas within each story that, interspersed throughout a larger narrative (that of the book as a whole), form what Roland Barthes called the “obtuse” metafiction that takes place beneath the surface of a single image. This is to say that dynamic elements, if one is given an initial understanding of their nature, reconfigure themselves based upon the additional context of new plots, phrases, abstractions, metaphors, allusions, and cultural bases and biases. Such is the context that establishes (or re-establishes)

In every alley of Ueno station, one of the main train stations in Tokyo, there were always groups of former war prisoners held in Siberia, still wearing their tattered uniforms and playing accordion, chanting, and panhandling. Many of them had lost their limbs and eyes and made a horrifying, yet curious, spectacle. As a little child, I could not help but ask my father “Who are they?” That was the beginning of a long dialogue about war between the two of us. That image has remained deep in my heart up to this day with the sorrowful sound of accordions. My father had just started work at an electrical laboratory at the University of Tokyo when he found he had been drafted into the imperial military and would be sent to China to work on electrical communications. He was 21 years old. His most trusted professor held a secret meeting in the basement of the university with the newest crop of drafted young men and told them, “Japan is engaging in an impossible war that we will never win.

Panella Page | 1 Time-Loop Chronicles About Author John V. Panella has been writing off and on for decades. Back in the early 70’s he dabbled in writing scripts for television shows and movies for personal enjoyment. It was then in the 80’s he began to get serious and started writing about potential errors in our historical archives and records. This led him into a series of writings and his first book dealing with codes, prophecies, history, religion and spiritual belief paradigms. For the last 25-years, he has spent a lot of his time sharing his discoveries, writing hundreds of articles, magazines, along with many books. Then one day he decided why not go back to his past and leave the non- fiction genre behind for a while and get back to his first love, Science Fiction and Time Travel. Instead of trying to fit all the pieces of our past, why not change a few of them with scenarios that make you wonder, what if this happened, or that happened, and what if what we have been told is simply not true? After spending so much dedicated time trying to make sure everything he had written was accurate, he decided, why not throw it all up in the air, and let the chips fall where they may.

University of Nevada, Reno Partying with Hello Kitty: How Electronic Dance Music and Rave Culture are transforming, commercializing, and globalizing youth culture in the twenty-first century A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History By Geoff Scott Dr. Hugh Shapiro/Thesis Advisor May 2014 i Abstract This thesis will demonstrate how electronic dance music (EDM) has evolved from the musical underground during the second half of the twentieth century into the mainstream, commercial powerhouse it is now in the early twenty-first-century world. EDM at its core is a musical style characterized by the use of synthetic, electronic sounds. The combination of technological devices such as drum machines, repetitive bass lines, electronic builds and releases and inorganic noises in tandem with instrumental and vocal samples makes EDM an incredibly malleable style of dance music that has branched into a variety of forms over the course of its less than fifty year existence. Innovations in technology, like the tape reel, the Moog synthesizer, the vinyl mixer and the computer have led to new ways of contemplating and creating music. I argue that the innovative musical voices of late modernism and early postmodernism set the foundation for early EDM, who were not afraid to harness the new synthetic sounds at their disposal. Electronic dance music can trace its roots back to the repetitive, minimalist structures used since the 1960’s by postmodern composers such as Philip Glass and the electronic instrumentation of artists like Terry Riley and John Cage. Owing to its flexibility, EDM has also been re-contextualized in different cultures.

  • Lyrics by Thorsten Nesch 1 a Few Words
Lyrics by Thorsten Nesch 1 A few words: Thanks for giving a damn and being interested in my songs. 1998 I started writing songs in English, same time I picked up the guitar. These are not all of my songs but the ones I deem passable. You can (or did) listen to them on www.nesch.bandcamp.com. It's an evolving process as I re-record my songs. Most songs are about the stuff I like: drinking, love and travelling. Besides music I also like books and movies, so I drop some names like Bukowski, Kerouac and Jarmusch among others in here. The songs take place in Canada (B.C and Alberta), Germany, Ireland, Albania, Australia and other places. You find an anecdote to each song in here what was a fun thing to do. I also added some evidence and handwritten first versions of songs in here. I would like seeing that myself in songbooks from others. Over half of these lyrics I didn't write at home, I wrote them on the road, in buses, many trains, hotel rooms, cafes, bars and during writing residencies in Denmark (H.A.L.D.) and Hausach in the Black Forest (LeseLenz). And by the way “Thanks for giving a damn” by Otis Gibbs is also one of the best music podcasts out there. Do yourself a favour and check it out. Other tips? Over last 10 years most music I discovered over “Hi54Lofi” blog run by Jeremy. Another radio show is “Dirty Windshield Radio Hour” by Leeroy Stagger on CKUA, what is a good place to be for your ears anyway, in case you didn't know already.

  • 'Hills' Alum Holly Montag Is Dating Audrina Patridge's Ex Justin Bobby
‘Hills’ Alum Holly Montag Is Dating Audrina Patridge’s Ex Justin Bobby The ladies of The Hills are at it again! According to UsMagazine.com, Holly Montag is enjoying a taste of Audrina Patridge and Kristin Cavallari’s sloppy thirds and has decided to attempt a relationship with known bad boy Justin “Bobby.” One source close to the couple says, “They’re dating and have been for awhile”. Maybe the third time’s the charm for Justin Bobby … or maybe not. Is it important to take a person’s past into account pre- relationship? Cupid’s Advice: When entering into a new relationship, many of us try to look at it as a fresh start and let the past be the past. But, is it even possible to change? Cupid has some things to think about when looking into your partner’s old flings: 1. How it ended: Sometimes things just don’t work out, but it’s important to look at why they didn’t. If your partner and his or her ex ended amicably, then there may not be much to inquire about. But, if there’s bad blood, you might consider finding out more details. 2. Did he learn from it?: Of course people make mistakes, and every mistake is a learning experience. One of the important things to look at when asking about a prior relationship that ended badly, is if he exhibits the same behavior that was previously an issue. 3. Level of commitment: Did your partner have a few serious relationships, or did he just jump around? Gauging his/her’s level of commitment from their previous partner(s) allows you a glimpse at what to expect.
