High-res depth model required within a whole-of- GBR scale hydrodynamic model. Lack of info about deep-water ecosystems lying deeper than 200 m in GBRWHA. Vast areas of reefs and shoals have never been mapped with modern survey techniques. Key seabed features are hidden from view and outside of effective management. 3 Resolution: 0.001-arc deg (~100m) Longitude: 142° to 160° East Latitude: 10° to 29° South Horizontal datum: WGS84 Vertical datum: MSL Area: 3,000,000 km2 4 Multibeam swath surveys 5 Example source multibeam data: RV Southern Surveyor, GBR margin, 2007 5 km 6 Singlebeam echosounder surveys 7 Example singlebeam data: GBR Seabed Biodiversity survey, 2003-2005 10 km 8 Lidar aerial surveys 9 Example lidar data: RAN LADS survey, Ribbon Reefs, 1995 3 km 10 Satellite bathymetry 11 Example satellite bathymetry data: ALOS AVNIR2 scene, offshore Cooktown Equivalent lidar coverage 4 km 12 Satellite elevation 13 Example satellite elevation data: SRTM 1-arcsec data, Hinchinbrook Island 14 Horizontal datum WGS84 AGD66 WGS84 WGS84 15 Vertical datum MSL LAT 16 Coastline 0 m 17 Noise 18 ~840million xyz points (not including SRTM) 19 Proportion of data sources 0.27% 2.77% 2.42% 0.24% 94.31% 20 Gridding process 21 22 Stradbroke, Moreton Islands 23 Fraser Island 24 Capricorn, Bunker Group 25 Shoalwater Bay, Pompey Reef 26 Whitsunday Islands 27 Townsville area 28 Cairns area 29 Cooktown area 30 Cape York area 31 Southern Queensland Plateau 32 Northern Queensland Plateau 33 Southern seamounts 34 Northern plateaus 35 New gbr100 grid AusBathyTopo (GA, 2009) 30 km 36 New gbr100 grid AusBathyTopo (GA, 2009) 60 km 37 Future research & opportunities • Public accessible formats by 30 Sept 2010. • Ongoing revision of gbr100 grid (V2.0+). • Fine-scale geomorphic maps by June 2011. • Expanded spatial coverage at 100 m-resolution? • Satellite bathymetry for remote reef areas? • New uses for 3D grids and collaborations? 38 Acknowledgments • David Sandwell (SIO) • Michael Andrew, Mark Bolger (AHS) • Andrew Owen, Robert Parums, Steve Sagar (GA) • Rudi Kloser, Roland Pitcher (CSIRO) • MSQ and Qld Ports Authorities • Sheriden Morris (RRRC) • Qld Smart Futures Fellowship 39.
