Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Poor This reminds me of poverty. It reminds me of poverty because of the scratches. I like the story that goes with the icon. And how Mary’s and Jesus’ garb seem poor but are beautiful. SG Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Sorrowful This image reminds me of Mary’s evangelical counsel of most sorrowful. I was reminded of this counsel because of the expression on Mary’s face. Her eyes are closed and she looks a little sad. This picture gives me the impression Mary is thinking about her Son’s sad fate. This is my favorite image because I think it is really neat how the artist has portrayed Jesus and Mary with dark skin. I also chose this image because although Mary looks sad, she also looks obedient, which is very inspiring. HH Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Pure The reason I like Our Lady of Guadalupe as my favorite picture, is because it reminds me how even “old looking” art is beautiful in its own way. The counsel for this work of art is most pure. The reason why is that she was lifted by an angel and stepped on a snake that is a representation of the devil. AT Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Obedient The image I chose is by Jan Van Eyck (from the Ghent Altarpiece, 1432). I chose this image because it really emphasizes that Mary is a queen, and she is a queen of heaven and earth. I also think this is a beautiful image of Mary. I think of chastity and obedience. I think of obedience because she is holding a bible in her hand praying to God. EF Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Pure This is my favorite image of Mary because Mary is wearing a blue scarf that looks too big for her. This reminds me of when young children play dress up, which shows and reminds us that Mary is human too. I think the virtue being shown here is most pure because she is young and innocent like all young children. RMC Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Patient This is my favorite image because of how refined the details are. Her face is depicted like a stern face, yet calm. She doesn’t seem to be angry, just peaceful. Other than her facial features, I also admire her robes which have neatly depicted roses. And if I can recall, roses symbolize love and passion. It feels like she’s sending us a message saying, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” I think it matches with patience because Mary looks as if she’s waiting for someone. Her folded hands could mean she is not hasty and anxious. She appears so calm and composed which probably means the person is late. In my opinion, Mary is telling us, “It’s never too late to turn to God. It’s never too late to ask God for help. Even if you fall into the darkest void in your life, His light will be there to shine at its brightest.” Quote from Pinterest: God has perfect timing. He is never early, never late. It takes little patience and faith. But it’s worth the wait. MH Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Pure Mary is the perfect model of faith, pictured here with God Himself. In this picture, Mary looks like she is glowing, shining her light down on us. This picture reminds me of one of her titles, Mary Most Pure…as in pure of heart. She glows from the inside out. Her heart is like the lighthouse inside the mighty sea of life. Guiding us through it to help us find the shore, Heaven. CG Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Pure This is my favorite image of Mother Mary. I like this image because she is looking down as if she is in heaven and she is watching over us. Her halo is delicate and beautiful like her, and the flowers remind me of the ones depicted in the Annunciation. Her outfit is how I personally imagine it, plain yet elegant. She is very modest. Her brown hair is more accurate with where she lived, and her face is so gentle. This image makes me feel safe. I think this matches the evangelical counsel of purity because she is dressed modestly, she looks so chaste in this image and the flowers could represent her virginity. There is a large white glow that reminds me of the fact that she is immaculate and holy. In this image she is looking down at you as to remind you to be chaste because she is watching. GS Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Pure I picked this one as my favorite because first it looked visually pleasing. Then I looked more into detail and noticed Mary’s eyes in this art piece. Mary’s gaze towards Jesus looks so full of infinite love and care. And I see wonder in her eyes. I think what I'm seeing is all the feelings of a parent towards their child, all in one. That’s what stood out to me, her eyes. But back to the visually pleasing part. I love the hair accessory on Mary’s head. It’s like a tiara or crown but more humble. And also Mary is again setting another virtuous example, prayer with her prayerful hands. And this image reminds me of Mary most pure because of her eyes. Her eyes don’t seem to have any intentions that aren’t God’s intentions as well. SS Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels I love this image because it shows her beauty and her purity through art. I like it because it truly is worth staring at for hours and makes you think about Mary and how she must have been. It makes you want to think and reflect on the things that are portrayed in the ways that you might find interesting. I love it because to me it is just so accurate. Not that she looks like that or anything, because she is probably even more beautiful. This image reminds me of the following Evangelical Counsels: Most Pure-----She looks perfectly untouched. Most Humble----I don’t know why but something about this picture simply reminds me of it. Most Faithful----The rosary she carries reminds me of it. Most Devote-----The rosary she carries reminds me of it. Most Merciful-----Her heart and the crown with thorns reminds me of the pain and suffering she experienced when her Son went through all of this pain, too. And the fact that, even so, she still forgave us and called us her children. Most Sorrowful------The Pain she suffered MCL Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Humble My favorite image of Mary is this one of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I really like how she is being raised up and honored, and yet she has her head down and hands together in prayer. I think this depiction of Mary goes really well with, “Mary, Most Humble”. AM Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Patient Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon shows Mary comforting the baby Jesus. As a daughter, and especially during this time, I realize how much patience it takes to be a mother. Mary at her young age, was the best mother to Our Lord and to us all. GH Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mother Mary The first thing I thought of was poverty, which I think was wrong of me. I thought they might be poor because the child isn’t wearing any clothes. I also thought they might reflect poverty because they aren’t American, and I am ashamed of myself for thinking that way. In the end I don’t think this picture relates to poverty, but it was my first thought… SF Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Humble I love this image of Mary because it is still slightly modern and makes Mary look like an ordinary person, although she is the Queen of Heaven and Earth. I think that this image matches the evangelical counsel “Mary, Most Humble” because in the image she looks poor and meek…although she is a queen, she is still humble and pious. ST Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Humble This is my favorite image because it looks more modern and it is very detailed. I also like how Mary is still wearing blue in this image. I believe this image matches Mary most humble because she is not wearing a lot of jewelry and crowns like in some of the other ones. She obviously deserves the crowns and jewelry, but I like how simple this is. It is reminding us that she was human and that she was poor. AL Sacred Art and Mary’s 10 Evangelical Counsels Mary, Most Humble Mary, Most Pure My eyes were drawn to this image because I loved how simple it was. The colors were beautiful but there weren’t so many that it was overwhelming. This led me to think of the virtue: Mary, Most Humble.
