Albanese I If a quintessential metaphysical catechism were to be named, one of the major textual candidates would be H. Emilie Cady's Lessons in Truth—a basic for the Unity School of Christianity, a staple in its bookstores, and an often-cited work in its metaphysical communications. First published in 1894, the book features chapters that originated in a series of articles contributed to Unity publications from 1892 by Cady, a practicing physi- cian. Exact records of how many copies have been published are not avail- able, but the back cover of the 1967 edition offers one piece of evidence, announcing that the print order came to 60,000 copies per printing for many years and that this particular edition is the forty-fourth. Over thirty years later now, it is not unreasonable to estimate that some 3 million copies of the text have been printed. This work stands out not only because of its classical status but also because its slightly old-fashioned title Lessons in Truth conjures, in an especially marked way, the sense of belief in a fixed order of the universe that evocations of metaphysics initially convey. In this reified ontology there is a realm of absolute truth and reality, substantial and unchanging. Catherine L. Law of attraction (New Thought) In the New Thought philosophy, the Law of Attraction is the belief that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into a person's life.[1][2] The belief is based on the ideas that people and their thoughts are made from pure energy, and that through the process of like energy attracting like energy a person can improve their health, wealth, and personal relationships. Advocates generally combine cognitive reframing techniques with affirmations and creative visualization to replace limiting or self-destructive ("negative") thoughts with more empowered, adaptive ("positive") thoughts. A key component of the philosophy is the idea that in order to effectively change one's negative thinking patterns, one must also "feel" (through creative visualization) that the desired changes have already occurred. Early in his life, Quimby was diagnosed with tuberculosis. However, medicinal treatment wasn't working, so he began carriage riding through his hometown, Lebanon, New Hampshire. He then regained his health and recovered, an event that prompted his study of "mind over body".[9] Although he never used the words 'Law of Attraction', he explained this in a statement that captured the concept in the field of health: the trouble is in the mind, for the body is only the house for the mind to dwell in, and we put a value on it according to its worth. -

Why James Allen Still Matters By Mitch Horowitz James Allen’s literary career was short, ranging roughly from the publication of his first book in 1901 to his death in 1912. Yet these few years of output resulted in nearly twenty books, including one of the most widely read inspirational works of our time: As a Man Thinketh. Allen’s book became read in households where few or no other New Thought books were found. His methods of mental creativity and ethical self-seeking set the template for much of the metaphysical culture in America in the twentieth century. In a sense, the key to understanding Allen’s work appears in the details of his own life. The writer’s journey from “poverty to power,” to use his phrase, was Allen’s greatest creation. James Allen was born in 1864 in Leicester, an industrial town in central England. His father, William, was a successful knitting manufacturer who cultivated James’s taste in books and philosophy. A downturn in the textile trade drove William out of business, and in 1879 he traveled to New York City to look for new work. His plan was to get 1 settled and pay for the rest of the family to join him. But the unthinkable occurred. On the brink of the Christmas season, just after James had turned 15, word came back to the Allen household that its patriarch was dead. William had been found robbed and murdered two days after reaching New York. His battered body, with pockets emptied, lay in a city hospital. -

Jakub Ženíšek, my supervisor, for providing valuable suggestions and linguistic guidance. 3 Abstrakt This thesis provides details about historical background of American Transcendentalism, a theological, philosophical and literary tradition of the first half of the nineteenth century in United States and of New Age religion originating roughly at the turn of the same century and maturing in the 1970’s in a form of the New Age movement. The work focuses on the influence of American Transcendentalism as one of the shaping factors, which contributed to the emergence of New Age. The attention is placed primarily on the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Through a detailed analysis of selected Emerson’s essays parallels are drawn between the beliefs held by the Transcendentalists, mainly Emerson, and general beliefs shared with the New Age community. Following the historical development of both traditions, we discover the point of convergence, namely the New Thought movement originating in the second half of the nineteenth century.
