Sir Joseph's Character Reference Sheet Sir Joseph’s Character Reference Sheet Name: Sir Joseph of the Smith Colors/Affinity: White/Blue/Green and Artifacts Species: Human Class: Artificer Wizard Biological Sex: Male Sexual Orientation: Homosexual Physical Description: 5’10” in height; weighs 170 pounds; has bluish-gray eyes; has curly, reddish hair down to the floor which he does something different with at every opportunity; has a lengthy red beard, into which he braids his Sigils; slender frame with a bit of paunch and a surprising amount of muscle on it; walks with a limp in his right leg and is never seen without his cane sword Personality: Manic Depressive who remains hopeful despite it; a true romantic Speech Quirks: Long-winded and fancy; loses track mid-sentence at times; hates to be interrupted Quote: “Bant will endure and Mirrodin will endure, as so shall we all endure.” Plane of Origin: Alara (the Shard of Bant) Planes Visited: Alara (he is from the Shard of Bant, but has seen Esper, Grixis, Jund, and Naya in post-Conflux Alara the Reborn, which is currently his home), Dominaria, Kamigawa, Llorwyn, Mirrodin/New Phyrexia, Rabiah, Ravnica, Shadowmoor, Shandalar, Zendikar Notable Mentions: Ajani Goldmane – Sir Joseph has deep respect and admiration for Ajani Goldmane and has fought beside him many times. He also finds him incredibly attractive, in ways both physical and mental. He hopes that Ajani will overcome his grief at the loss of Elspeth Tirel on Theros, and he meant it when he told the Nacatl Leonin that he could always come to him for any reason at any time. Elspeth Tirel – Sir Joseph didn’t particularly care for Elspeth’s mopey attitude, but he respected her capacity for good, her combat prowess, and her compassion. He fought beside her a few times against the hordes of Grixis, and misses her despite their disagreements. Mephiri – As a dreamer and tinkerer, Mephiri naturally despises Sir Joseph. That hatred has grown a thousandfold after the Sigiled artificer’s visit to his home plane of Rabiah, where Sir Joseph sought the wisdom of King Suleiman’s teachings. Rafiq of the Many – Sir Joseph supplies Rafiq with weapons and boons whenever he can, to aid in Bant’s resistance against the hordes of Grixis. He fights beside his old friend whenever he can, and would do anything for him. The People of Zendikar – Sir Joseph has a great respect for the Kor and their ability to craft unique equipment, and has spent a great deal of time amongst them. He loves Zendikar, and the insane sense of adventure and wonder present amongst the Hedrons and out questing with his Allies. He hasn’t been back there in a while. The Mirran Resistance – Sir Joseph fights alongside their ranks whenever he can, and has learned a great deal about metalcraft from the Auriok. He hates the Phyrexians, especially having seen what they did to Dominaria. Major Life Moments: Dreaming of other worlds in his youth, and the later realization that those dreams were true and that those worlds had names; Being accepted to and later expelled from the grandest academy in Akrasa; His father teaching him what he knew of the forge as a trade skill; Falling in love with a Rhox man named Al-Amir, and figuring out his sexuality; Being exiled from Akrasa to the Outlands for interfering in a royal investigation into that Rhox man whom he loved; Losing and regaining that Rhox’s love time after time after time; Meeting his heroes Ajani Goldmane and Rafiq of the Many How Their Spark Ignited: Sir Joseph watched his beloved, a Rhox monk whose name he will not even speak, walk into a temporary tear torn in the fabric of reality during the Conflux which lead into the Blind Eternities, never to be seen again. The two of them had been on and off for years, living near each other, both of them Outlanders, their stories constantly intertwined despite not always being together. As he had put it, “There are endless worlds out there, Joe. You’ve dreamed of them, you know they’re real. You’re happy in at least one of them, and maybe I am, too. I love you.” Sir Joseph tried to follow his beloved, but upon seeing the Blind Eternities in-person, his Spark ignited and he found himself in the land of Llorwyn that he had dreamt of so very often. Special Training: Sir Joseph was taught enchanting in a grand academy in Akrasa, from which he was expelled for his theories on tapping into the powers of god-like beings from other realities. The Rhoxes in the Outlander monasteries taught Sir Joseph the ways of the forge, which he was already no stranger to as his father had long been a royal smith and had taught him plenty, and he furthered those studies amongst the Kor of Zendikar and the Auriok of Mirrodin/New Phyrexia. Ajani Goldmane and Rafiq of the Many taught him how to fight in ways the monks and the knights never could. Goals: The liberation of Mirrodin from the Phyrexians; Glory and salvation for his homeland of Bant; Helping Ajani in any way he can whenever he can; Redemption for everybody (including his nemesis, Mephiri) .

  • Gathering of Card Players and Subcultural Expression
THE MAGIC OF COMMUNITY: GATHERING OF CARD PLAYERS AND SUBCULTURAL EXPRESSION Travis J. Limbert A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Dr. Marilyn Motz, Advisor Dr. Esther Clinton © 2012 Travis Limbert All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Marilyn Motz, Advisor When Magic: the Gathering was released in 1993, it was the first trading card game. It paved the way for the trading card game subculture and market that exists today. This thesis explores the implications of this subculture and the ways it can be thought of as an urban leisure subculture. This thesis also discusses Magic’s unique community, which has been instrumental in the game’s success over the last two decades. Magic’s community is created symbiotically, through official support by Wizards of the Coast, and the parent company Hasbro, as well as the usage and interaction by the fans and players. It is this interaction that creates a unique community for Magic, which leads to the game’s global popularity, including its tremendous growth since 2010. This thesis looks at trade publications, articles written about Magic, player responses collected through online surveys, and other works to create an extensive work on Magic and its community. This thesis focuses on how the community is important to the consumption of copyrighted cultural texts and how this creates of meaning in players’ lives. iv To my parents, James and Jona, who always encouraged me. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my thesis committee, Dr.

  • Mephiri's Character Reference Sheet
Mephiri’s Character Reference Sheet Name: Mephiri Colors/Affinity: Red and Artifacts Species: Efreet Class: Barbarian Biological Sex: Male Sexual Orientation: Whatever anyone wishes it to be Physical Description: Mephiri usually presents himself as a bipedal horse-like skeleton wreathed in flames that is at least twelve feet tall; He is never seen without his shackles adorning his wrists and ankles, no matter what form he is currently presenting himself as In his natural form, Mephiri is nearly seven feet tall, dark-skinned with a reddish tint, and has hair the colors of a burning forest. He keeps a neat, pointy goatee, but his hair is always wild and long and free. He almost never wears clothing. Personality: Mephiri likes to trick people with false promises and “monkey’s paw” wishes, as is the way of the Efreet. He is extremely-covetous, and is incredibly- envious of the freedoms that non-Efreeti and non-Djinni people have to follow their dreams, his own wistful dreams being the only things that kept him going for so long in his prison. Speech Quirks: Mephiri speaks in riddles and rhymes, and never directly says much of anything without obfuscating it within some quirky limerick. Quote: “I could grant your deepest, darkest desires and make them flesh. I could inflict such pleasures upon your body. Simply utter the words and make those dark promises, and swear them to me as if I am the devil you are so afraid of meeting.” Plane of Origin: Rabiah the Infinite Planes Visited: Alara the Reborn, Dominaria/Dominia, Innistrad, Kamigawa, Rabiah the Infinite (his home plane), Ravnica, Shandalar, Wildfire, Zendikar Notable Mentions: The Barbarians of the Pardic Mountains – Mephiri visited Dominaria early into his Planeswalking career, curious to see what the most famous realm in the Multiverse had to offer one such as him.

Introduction This document is designed for people who’ve moved beyond the basics of the Magic: The Gathering® game. If you’re a beginning Magic™ player, you’ll probably find these rules intimidating. For casual play and most ordinary situations, you’ll find what you need in the Magic: The Gathering basic rules. You can download a copy of the basic rules PDF from the Wizards of the Coast® Magic rules website at Magic.Wizards.com/EN/Rules. If you’re sure this is where you want to be, keep reading.
