On March 18, 2021, Dollarway School District hosted its 2021 Career Exploration Camp for 8th – 12th grade students. The event was presented to virtual and to students that attended in-person. During Career Exploration Camp students were introduced to traditional as well as non-traditional careers for male and females. Non-traditional careers refer to jobs that have been traditionally filled by one gender. The US Department of Labor defines non-traditional occupations as occupations for which individual from one gender (male or female) comprise less than 25% of the individual employed in that particular career. Arkansas Career Exploration camps allow students the opportunity to participate in exciting hands-on activities and further explore their own personalized career guidance plans. Dollarway students received information and hands on activities from local small businesses, alumni, district professionals, and Jefferson Area Technical Career Center. The camp’s first participants were Dollarway’s own Nurse Felecia Miller and Nurse Kathy Wells who represented the Health Science Career cluster. Students learned first aid procedures, such how to stop the bleed and basic concepts of how to use an AED in case of an emergency. Mr. Jackie Harris, Attorney, and former NFL Player for the , , , and presented under the Hospitality & Tourism Cluster. Attorney Harris encourage students that are interested in becoming a professional athlete is, but emphasized “that they are student-athletes, with student being first” he further stated that, “students should make their education part of their main plan and not consider it as a fall- back plan”. Mr. Harris facilitated an activity on increasing hand-strength in football, so that student athletes would have better control of the football. Attorney Harris is now practicing law at McKissic & Associates Law Firm in Pine Bluff. Mr. Kendrick “Pops” Williams owner and operator of Pops Beauty & Barber shop and Mrs. Stephanie Clark owner and operator from Opulence Hair & Beauty Salon presented to students in the Human Services, Business Management and Administration career cluster. Mr. Williams stated that sometimes in their business they field like counselors. He stated that they would like for people to feel better about themselves when they leave than when they came in. Mrs. Clark spoke extensively about the students becoming entrepreneurs and how they should prepare to create a career in what they love to do. Mr. Williams showcased his barber equipment/tools and Mrs. Clark showed students the proper way to clip natural hair ends. Both businesses are local in the city of Pine Bluff. Mr. Kourtney Smith who is a Music Educator at Dollarway High School presented under the Education and Training career cluster. Mr. Smith is also a Dollarway alumni and local Pastor at Destiny Worship Center. Mr. Smith shared his step by step career path with students and as a music teacher he led an activity on how to identify keys on the piano. Lastly, students at Dollarway were introduced to Jefferson Area Technical Career Center. Mr. Kurwin White, Director, supplied students with information on career and post-high school job market preparation. Students were able to obtain information about credits and certification they can receive while still in high School. Some of the courses they can enroll in involve the following fields: Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Welding. Students were able to observe students working within a crime scene and students taking vital signs. Several students assisted with the narration of the career camp via zoom. Their names are as listed; (12th graders) Freddiemae Thompson and Jessiah Grisby, (11th graders) Tyler Jenkins, Eddie Collins, Tamera Smith, (10th graders) Tyazia Daniels and Trace Suggs, Mr. Cross 8th grade class. The Career Exploration Camp was hosted by Ms. Marla Barnes, College & Career Coach for the Dollarway School District. The camp was supported by Robert F. Morehead Middle School campus staff Ms. Ronnieus Thompson (Principal), Kanechia Sergeant (counselor), Mr. Dedrick Cross (History Teacher) and Dollarway High School staff, Mrs. Yolunda Prim (Principal), Mr. Frank Lyles (Math Instructor) and Mr. Freddie Harris (Counselor).
