University of Tampere Tampere 2000 Maarit Piipponen. “(No) More Family: Reading Family and Serial Murder in Patricia Cornwell’s Gault-Trilogy.” Tohtorinväitöskirja: Englantilainen filologia, Tampereen yliopisto. 265 s. ________________________________________________________________________________ Tarkastelen väitöskirjassani perheen ja sarjamurhan yhteenkietoutumista amerikkalaisen rikoskirjailijan Patricia Cornwellin kolmessa Kay Scarpetta-romaanissa: Cruel and Unusual (1993), The Body Farm (1994), ja From Potter’s Field (1995). Kutsun näitä romaaneja työssäni Gault-trilogiaksi, koska kaikissa esiintyy sarjamurhaaja Temple Brooks Gault: sarja alkaa Gaultin astumisella Scarpetan maailmaan, ja liikkuu kopiomurhan kautta Gaultin kuolemaan trilogian viimeisessä osassa. Erityisen tarkastelun kohteena on murha perheessä, koska sarjamurhaaja tappaa sisarensa trilogian viimeisessä romaanissa. Luku 3 analysoi sukupuolta ja sukupuolista identiteettiä trilogiassa. Sarjamurhaajan hahmo nähdään romaaneissa nimenomaan uhkana siksi, koska hän rikkoo heteroseksuaalisen sukupuolijärjestelmän binaarilogiikan. Sarjamurhaaja esiintyy useissa ’toiseuden’ hahmoissa eikä hänellä näytä olevan stabiilia sukupuolta ja sukupuolista identiteettiä. Hän mm. näyttää naiselta ja homoseksuaalilta mieheltä. Naismainen mies yhdistetään trilogiassa systemaattisesti homoseksuaalisuuteen, ja homoseksuaalinen mies on taas aina HIV-viruksen kantaja. Täten romaanit tuomitsevat ’poikkeavan’ miehen, ja koska hänet esitetään sarjamurhan kontekstissa, niin poikkeavuus rakentuu entistä suuremmaksi uhaksi. Samaten romaanien päähenkilö, oikeuslääkäri, kuvataan poikkeavaksi naiseksi, ’maskuliiniseksi’ naiseksi: juuri tämän oman poikkeavuutensa takia hän pystyy lukemaan rikollista. Naisten maskuliinisuus puolestaan yhdistetään romaaneissa aina lesbolaisuuteen. CONTENTS Acknowledgements 1. I wish to express my gratitude to a number of people who have commented on the various parts or drafts of my thesis during the past years. This thesis has two different ’homes’: the Department of English, University of Tampere, and the Finnish Graduate School for North American Studies. I would thus like to thank my supervisors Professor Ralf Norrman and Dr. David Robertson at the Department of English, and Professor Olli Vehviläinen, Professor Markku Henriksson, and Dr. Michael Coleman of the Graduate School. I would also like to express my thanks to the other student members of the school as well as to the visiting scholars for their comments. In particular, I would like to thank the following persons, who have in various ways encouraged me and/or critically read the various drafts or parts of the thesis: Antony Easthope, Tina Parke- Sutherland, Heta Pyrhönen, and Nicholas Royle. During the last couple of years, Arja Kulmala and Kaija Marjamäki patiently listened to my thoughts on serial killers and Cornwell over cups of coffee and glasses of wine; sometimes we had the pleasure of being accompanied by Tiina Ohinmaa. Satu Manninen and Asko Kauppinen provided me with bed & breakfast, and much more, during my visits in Edinburgh; now we all know that one slice of the chocolate cake is just not enough. Riitta Laitinen and Tuija Modinos always encouraged me and, in their own ways, pushed me towards gender studies. Mikko Tuhkanen kindly read my chapters despite the geographical distance between us: indeed, electric communication knows no boundaries. For financial support and travel grants, I am grateful to the University of Tampere, H. Weijola Foundation, the Department of English Philology, Suomalainen Konkordialiitto, and Oskar Öflunds Stiftelse. I also wish to thank the examiners appointed by the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Tampere for their valuable comments on my work: Associate Professor Judith Halberstam (University of California, San Diego) and Dr. Sally R. Munt (University of Brighton, UK). I believe that, had I been able to receive their comments at an earlier stage, this study would have been much better. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to my parents Lilja and Paavo Piipponen for their

The Body Farm 1 The Body Farm Rachel Hilton Salt Lake Community College Mortuary Science Department The Body Farm 2 The Body Farm The Body Farm, a strange and eerie term you may have heard in a book or on a television show, meaning exactly what it sounds like: an outdoor research facility where bodies are strategically placed in the sun, in the shade, in ponds and in trunks and examined to see the effects of time and certain elements. Why do we have several body farms in the United States and what purpose do they serve? One day the students and staff of body farms across the U.S. hope to aide law enforcement in catching criminals by making an atlas of what happens to the human body after death. By developing this atlas equipped with pictures, copious amounts of time will be saved by law enforcement, time that would otherwise be wasted on trying to develop a time of death. The education a body farm can provide for aspiring forensic anthropology students is endless. Many teachers have tried to simulate crime scenes in classrooms, and while they do work and give students a broader spectrum of inquiries, to have an actual body to study over time is the ultimate gift. Body Farms in the U.S Dr. William M. Bass’ inspiration for starting the body farm stemmed from a possible murder case presented to him by local police where they asked him to approximate time of death of a body whose resting place was disturbed when a couple decided to remodel their home.

Summary: New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell brings back Kay Scarpetta, consulting forensic pathologist for the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, in her grittiest and most compelling novel. In rural North Carolina, the brutal murder of eleven-year-old Emily Steiner has shaken a small town. But more disturbing are the details of the crimes, chillingly reminiscent of the handiwork of a serial killer who has eluded the unit for years. Into this volatile atmosphere comes Scarpetta's ingenious, rebellious niece Lucy, an FBI intern with a promising future in Quantico's computer engineering facility--until she is accused of a shocking security violation. While coming to terms with Lucy, Kay must conduct a grisly forensic investigation at a clandestine research facility in Tennessee known as the Body Farm. There she will find more answers to Emily Steiner's murder--and evidence that paints a picture of a crime more horrifying than she imagined .

  • Confronting the Holocaust in Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther Novels
ATLANTIS Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies 38.1 (June 2016): 89-107 issn 0210-6124 “But What’s One More Murder?” Confronting the Holocaust in Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther Novels Anthony Lake Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates [email protected] Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther series of Nazi Germany-set historical crime novels use irony in the exploration of themes of complicity, guilt and redemption in relation to the Holocaust. The use of irony enables Kerr’s protagonist Bernie Gunther to confront and describe the Holocaust and establish his sense of selfhood as an anti-Nazi. However, it does not empower him to resist the Nazis actively. Bernie seeks to confront the Holocaust and describe his experiences as an unwilling Holocaust perpetrator when he led an SS police battalion at Minsk in 1941. Later, his feelings of guilt at his complicity with the Nazis in the Holocaust haunt him, and he seeks redemption by pursuing justice to solve conventional murders. The redemption that Bernie Gunther pursues is called into question in the ninth novel in the series, A Man Without Breath (2013), when the possibility of active resistance to the Nazis is revealed to him when he witnesses the Rosenstrasse Protests in Berlin in 1943. This revelation raises the questions of agency and choice, and forces an ordinary German like Bernie Gunther to confront the possibility that he might have actively opposed the Nazis, rather than allow himself to become their accomplice. Keywords: detective fiction; Holocaust; Philip Kerr; irony; guilt; redemption . “¿Qué supone un asesinato más?” Afrontando el Holocausto en las novelas de Philip Kerr sobre Bernie Gunther En las novelas policiacas de Philip Kerr sobre Bernie Gunther, ambientadas en la Alemania Nazi, el autor recurre con frecuencia a la ironía para explorar temas como la complicidad, la culpa o la redención en relación con el Holocausto.

  • 51 Dissection of Patricia Cornwell's Feminist Woman
JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES - VOLUME 10 (2012), 51-64 DISSECTION OF PATRICIA CORNWELL’S FEMINIST WOMAN DETECTIVE KAY SCARPETTA CARME FARRÉ-VIDAL University of Lleida ABSTRACT. This analysis of Kay Scarpetta acknowledges the importance of feminism in the identity of this woman detective. Kay Scarpetta contests patriarchy from the root: she is a forensic anthropologist with the necessary intellectual abilities and expertise for the pursuit of criminals. She has the power to solve the murder, the patriarchal privilege enjoyed by the traditional male detective, but her characterisation retains feminine characteristics, too: she can admit to be afraid in the face of danger and she cares for victims, those lying on her autopsy table – many of whom are women – but also the ones left behind. Kay Scarpetta’s identity leads her to expose the forms that women’s victimisation can take in a society based on prioritising men’s privileges. The obstacles that Kay Scarpetta has to overcome in order to expose patriarchy will not discourage her, though, since her ultimate goal is to help dignity and equality prevail. Keywords: Feminist detective fiction, Kay Scarpetta, equality, patriarchy, abuse of power, women’s victimisation. 51 Journal of English Studies, vol. 10 (2012) 51-64 CARME FARRÉ-VIDAL DISECCIÓN DEL FEMINISMO DE KAY SCARPETTA, LA MUJER DETECTIVE DE PATRICIA CORNWELL RESUMEN. The Remains of Doctor Bass Written by Alan Bellows on 06 November 2008 Name _________________________________ Under normal circumstances, one would expect a wandering throng of students to demonstrate animated displeasure upon encountering a human corpse in the woods; particularly a corpse as fragrant and festering as that which was found on an August afternoon in Knoxville, Tennessee. From a short distance the male figure almost appeared to be napping among the hummingbirds and squirrels, draped as he was over the pebbled ground. But something about his peculiar pose evoked a sense of grim finality– the body language of the deceased. The students knelt alongside the slumped form, seemingly untroubled by the acrid, syrupy tang of human decay which hung in the air. They remarked on the amount of decomposition that had become evident since their last visit, such as the sloughed skin and distended midsection. The insects which feasted upon the decommissioned man were of specific interest, prompting a number of photographs and note-jottings. After surveying the scene to their satisfaction, the students strolled across the glade to examine a considerably more decayed corpse in the trunk of an abandoned car. Their lack of alarm wasn’t altogether surprising, for they were part of the organization responsible for dumping these corpses– along with dozens more– throughout the otherwise serene forest. They were forensic anthropology students from the University of Tennessee. Affectionately referred to as the Body Farm, the facility was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bill Bass, a professor of anthropology at the university. Before the Body Farm was established, information on human decay was astonishingly inadequate, leaving criminal investigators poorly equipped for determining abandoned bodies’ time of death.

Kay Scarpetta Series Volume 6 FROM POTTER’S FIELD Patricia Cornwell And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. -Genesis 4:10 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS He walked with sure steps through snow, which was deep in Central Park, and it was late now, but he was not certain how late. Toward the Ramble rocks were black beneath stars, and he could hear and see his breathing because he was not like anybody else. Temple Gault had always been magical, a god who wore a human body. He did not slip as he walked, for example, when he was quite certain others would, and he did not know fear. Beneath the bill of a baseball cap, his eyes scanned. In the spot - and he knew precisely where it was - he squatted, moving the skirt of a long black coat out of the way. He set an old army knapsack in the snow and held his bare bloody hands in front of him, and though they were cold, they weren't impossibly cold. Gault did not like gloves unless they were made of latex, which was not warm, either. He washed his hands and face in soft new snow, then patted the used snow into a bloody snowball. This he placed next to the knapsack because he could not leave them. He smiled his thin smile. He was a happy dog digging on the beach as he disrupted snow in the park, eradicating footprints, looking for the emergency door.

Christmas had never been a particularly good time for Dr Kay Scarpetta. Although a The Body Farm/From Potters Field for most, it always seem to heighten the alienation felt by society's violent fringe; and that usually means more work for Scarpetta, Virginia's Chief Medical ExaminerI. The body was naked, female and found propped against a fountain in a bleak area of New York's Central Park. Her apparent manner of death points to a modus operandi that is chillingly familiar: the gunshot wound to the head, the sections of skin excised from the body, the displayed corpse - all suggest that Temple Brooks Gault, Scarpetta's nemesis, is back at work. Calling on all her reserves of courage and skill, and the able assistance of colleagues Marino and Wesley, Scarpetta must track this most dangerous of killers in pursuit of survival as well The Body Farm/From Potters Field justice - heading inexorably to an electrifying climax amid the dark, menacing labyrinths of the New York subway.
