Su fin es proveer de un medio de difusión de alto nivel académico a los trabajos sobre Historia de la Medicina presentados en las reuniones internacionales que son organizadas cada dos años bajo los auspicios de la Sociedad, en los años en los que no se lleva a cabo el Congreso Internacional de Historia de la Medicina. Por tal razón, este es el sexto número de Analecta, ya que se decidió tomar como el primero al volumen de las Actas de la Reunión Internacional llevada a cabo en Lisboa en 2001. La edición de Analecta será bianual, lo que contempla el que haya un volumen que se publique durante el año en el que se realicen los Congresos Internacionales, el cual contenga estudios monográficos de mayor extensión que los destinados a ser publicados en Vesalio, órgano oficial de la Sociedad, o cahiers producto de reuniones planeadas ex profeso o reuniendo trabajos refe rentes a un tema determinado y solicitados por invitación a los autores. ix Presentation In principle this would be the Analecta Historico Medica fourth issue, but, curiously, is the sixth one because the Editorial Commitee decided to take as the first one the volume containing the papers presented at the First International Meeting on the History of Medicine, held in Lisbon in 2001. Analecta Historico Medica represents a common effort by the Internationalis Societas Historiae Medicinae and the Faculty of Medicine of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)’ Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine. The aim is to provide the historico-medical community a means to publish, at a high academic level, the selected papers pre- sented in the International Meetings organized every two years, precisely in the years when the corresponding International Congress wouldn’t take place. Analecta will appear twice a year and it will publish, one year, the materials provenient from the International Meeting, and in the following year, monographic studies which extension made it incovenient to be included in Vesalius, the official organ of the ISHM, and some

Preface A note from the editors Pauline Podlashuk, our great aunt, wrote these memoirs in the early 1960s when she was in her eighties. She sent them to a grand-niece in London, asking her to arrange for publication. In January 1965 the publishers Cassell and Company wrote back as follows: We have now given serious consideration to Dr. Pauline Podlashuk’s memoirs: ADVENTURE OF LIFE, and I am sorry to have to tell you that we shall not be able to accept it for publication. Your Great Aunt certainly had an eventful life, and the manuscript makes for interesting reading. Unfortunately too much work would have to be done on it before the manuscript was publishable – and this we could not undertake. … In editing these memoirs, we can endorse the publisher’s view that the manuscript was indeed interesting but needed a great deal of work. We tried to retain our great aunt’s voice and use her words and phrases wherever possible. Sometimes we changed sentences and then on a second (or third or fourth) reading, returned to her original. Chances are that when you come across wording that makes you sit up and take extra notice, and expressions that are considered 'politically incorrect' today, it is her original voice.

    HISTORY – Theodor Escherich Theodor Escherich, who discovered the E. coli bacterium Tony Abraham Thomas, Christian Medical College, Vellore Escherichia coli (better known as E. coli), is both a harmless inhabitant in the intestine and a highly pathogenic organism capable of inflicting disease in the form of diarrhoea, dehydration and even death. Named after its discoverer Theodor Escherich, a German paediatrician and microbiologist, the gram negative bacillus is important not only because of its pathogenic activity but also because it is one of the best understood cellular life forms serving as a model organism and as a molecular biological 'workhorse' for numerous laboratories around the world.(1) Theodor Escherich was a giant in the field of paediatrics and microbiology with numerous contributions to both fields, expanding our knowledge of disease causing pathogens but more importantly finding ways to relieve suffering in children over the generations. Important contributions: 1. Identified and isolated 19 different bacteria that form the intestinal flora in infants. He identified Bacterium coli commune (the common colon bacillus now known as Escherichia coli) and described in its characteristics in detail. 2. Demonstrated the presence of diphtheria antitoxin in serum samples from children recovering from diphtheria and established the role of diphtheria antitoxin for the treatment of children with diphtheria. 3. Described the clinical signs of idiopathic infantile tetany (in 1890) and showed that hypoparathyroidism played a role in tetany. 4. Recognized the significance of intestinal bacteria in causing urinary tract infections in young girls. 5. Co-investigator and developer of anaerobic culture methods. 6. Identified the hazard of the high sodium content of cow’s milk, emphasized the value of breast-feeding, and developed the volumetric system of infant feeding that involved the weighing of infants before and after nursing.
