4 5 FOREWORD

PROF. PUAY-PENG HO Director, School of Architecture

The School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is very excited to be able to co-present the exhibition and sym- posium BUILDING CULTURE as part of the celebration programmes for the 20th anniversary of the founding of the School. The School stands at the confluence of ideas and practices in built environ- ment design, of the present and in future, in China and the world. In the past twenty years, the School has created a research and teaching ethos that valued excellence and innovation, and em- phasizing on its contribution to the community. The mission of the School of Architecture is to advance knowledge and prepare students for the increasingly complex world. As such, this exhibi- tion and symposium fit perfectly into the ethos and mission of the School. The best of innovative architecture designs from the new generation of Spanish architects are featured in this exciting ex- hibition which will allow both our students and the wider profes- sional public an understanding and appreciation of the achieve- ments of these Spanish architects. In addition, the community in Hong Kong can also have the opportunity to be exposed to best creative approaches in the design of the living environment and a chance to reflect on the best practices in the world.

At the School, we focus our research and teaching in the areas of sustainability design, urban studies and design and architectural conservation. I am pleased that the symposium will address issues in these same areas that require much research and innovation. With the dialogue between both Spanish designers and their coun- terpart from Hong Kong, I am sure the symposium will provide the necessary platform for the advancement of knowledge in these fields and also addressing the particular context in the Pearl River Delta. Above all, I wish the symposium and exhibition will create a desire to deepen the collaborations and exchanges between Spain and Hong Kong.

MR. JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ NADAL Consul General of Spain

I feel especially honoured to introduce BUILDING CULTURE, a multi- faceted event that will include the exhibition “Architecture with- out Paper”, the International Conference of Architecture “Hong Kong/Spain – Water and Culture”, and the Student Workshop on “New Market and Waterfront Communities.”

The Spanish Consulate-General in Hong Kong is proud to organize this event together with the International Conference on Architec- ture (ICOA), and with the School of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which celebrates in this year 2011 its 20th Anniversary.

Today, Hong Kong is at the forefront of technological innovation and architectural creative design in China and in Asia; Spain is privileged to have both a long tradition in architecture, and a young and dynamic generation of architects that has been ac- knowledged by their vibrant originality throughout the world. The exhibition, the conference and the workshop are therefore a unique opportunity for Spanish and Hong Kong architects and de- signers to exchange their views and experiences in the dynamic context of today’s world, when we all experience the need to re- view our traditional patterns and ideas in order to build modern and sustainable community environments. I am convinced that this special event will be not only useful for professional architects, designers, academicians and students, professionals, but also en- joyable for all our friends in Hong Kong.

Finally, I want to thank the Spanish Agency for International De- velopment Cooperation, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the curators and all our sponsors for their generous support.

6 7 OVERVIEW

PROF. MARISA YIU Organizer and co-convener of BUILDING CULTURE: Hong Kong -Spain, Water & Culture Symposium, CUHK

BUILDING CULTURE is an inaugural collaboration between the School of Architecture at the Chinese University that bridges and exchanges, with various institutions and partners in Hong Kong and abroad. The hope is to further elaborate on the building of culture and the culture of the building profession. This year ICOA- International Conference of Architecture organized by Ana Hildago, María González and Silvia Villanueva has developed an exciting platform to share and introduce Spanish practices, designers, architects, curators and planners to a Hong Kong audience. The symposium gathers key members and representatives of current developments in Hong Kong to showcase the latest projects, amongst case studies and projects developed by Spanish designers and academics. Hong Kong’s vibrancy of culture and future developments are constantly influx, and this meeting offers a space for productive sharing, learning and reinterpretation amongst professionals, academics and students.

Cities in Spain such as Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia have undergone major evolution based on infrastructural changes on their sea and waterfronts to become cultural capitals or branded as ‘city of arts and sciences’, whereas Madrid has moved towards rebuilding the centre of the city. Such cases will serve as examples to discuss Hong Kong’s current developments that relate to waterfront developments of various scales. The new cruise terminal at the former airport in Kai-Tak, the West Kowloon Cultural District and the future South island area of Aberdeen are transforming the urban and social fabric as it undergoes future development. How do issues of sustainability, designing for cultural cities create areas of synergy and influence that engages and benefit the community of Hong Kong? What strategies have been or will be employed to activate the urban waterfronts of these cities? How is architecture and building design influencing the culture in Hong Kong and Spain? This BUILDING CULTURE symposium will be organized around four panels: Contemporary Spain and Hong Kong: cities in transformation, Designing for diverse Communities and Social Dynamics, Waterfronts and Landscapes, and finally, Urban Design: what’s next for Cultural sustainability and Designer Cities?

As part of the overall theme, an audio visual exhibition entitled “Architecture without Paper” is presented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, organized by Menchu Miguélez, Cultural Officer of the Consulate General of Spain Hong Kong and curated by Javier Maroto and Álvaro Soto. This travelling exhibition presented at the recent Venice Biennale, will be showcasing fifteen emerging design studios and practices based in Spain. As part of the programme, a student workshop between Architecture School of Madrid and CUHK will be hosted to encourage e sharing on the topic of “New market and waterfront communities”.

20 21 “New market and waterfront communities” STUDENT WORKSHOP

Organized by Marisa Yiu (CUHK) and Blanca Lleó (Architecture School of Madrid). November 9th- 11th, 2011 This workshop will examine old and new social enterprises that relate to food production: such as wet markers, farms, wholesale fish markets to supermarket typologies in HK. From contemporary explorations of socio-environmental needs and material explorations, the workshop of the studio will culminate into a design of a new Market Commune structure. A building and public space on a waterfront area will combine programs to accentuate food production and consumption into formal and spatial strategies. Students will engage with fish markets, visit and analyze the Aberdeen waterfront by taking a sampan boat tour. As a response to the future development of the MTR, the South Island Line (East) is currently being planned and will be a medium capacity system that will run from the South Horizons, via Lei Tung, Wong Chuk Hang, Ocean Park to Admiralty. The Market commune will be located at a strategic point along the Aberdeen promenade area, as a site for speculation to host a new market place centre that supports the local community, future inhabitants in the area and future influx of cultural tourists to the area. The arrival of the Spanish companies in Asia

When Spanish companies entered Latin America in the mid-1990s they created a wave of investment during a relatively short period and Spain joined the international list of major foreign investors. BBVA, Santander, Telefónica and Repsol were some of the companies that worked hard to build significant positions in the local markets. Gonzalo Toraño However, in the following decade Spanish investment flows focused on Europe. One BBVA reason for this was the Argentine crisis in Head of Asia Pacific 2001, which opened Spanish eyes to the Managing Director risk of concentrating investments in a single region. Another reason was the far greater ease of access to the enormous European market following the introduction of the euro. Spain’s funding costs became much lower compared to those that previously applied to its former currency and economic cycle.

Although Europe and Latin America remain the preferred targets of Spanish investment, in recent years direct foreign investment flows to Asia have increased for reasons that are easy to understand. Asia contains 60% of the world’s population and growth forecasts in that continent are generally much higher than in other regions. Furthermore, in many Asian countries the internal markets are still far less mature than those of developed economies.

The companies that have recognised this opportunity can be found in retail finance, retail commerce and renewable energy. Yet others provide the construction and infrastructure finance needed for economic development. The size of BBVA’s investment in China (over €3 billion) makes it a good example. It made a long-term commitment to the entire region, where it started operations more 30 years ago and now has presence through branches or representative offices in the main financial centres (Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, Taiwan, Mumbai, Sydney, Beijing and Shanghai).

At present there are countless opportunities for growth in Asia and BBVA is helping local and foreign companies with their expansion plans, and with their trading operations and investments in Europe, the United States and Latin America. BBVA, as close you need, far go. Europe, America and now, increasingly, Asia. We became a prominent internacional bank through hard work and simplicity. And our extensive presence in the important Asian markets, where we have over 30 years of experience, means we can o er innovative and transparent solutions that directly address our customers’ goals. Their trust inspires endeavours. We synchronise experience to generate value.
