  • Mega Conferences
Non-revenue sports Football, of course, provides the impetus for any conference realignment. In men's basketball, coaches will lose the built-in recruiting tool of playing near home during conference play and then at Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. But what about the rest of the sports? Here's a look at the potential Missouri Pittsburgh Syracuse Nebraska Ohio State Northwestern Minnesota Michigan St. Wisconsin Purdue State Penn Michigan Iowa Indiana Illinois future of the non-revenue sports at Rutgers if it joins the Big Ten: BASEBALL Now: Under longtime head coach Fred Hill Sr., the Scarlet Knights made the Rutgers NCAA Tournament four times last decade. The Big East Conference’s national clout was hurt by the defection of Miami in 2004. The last conference team to make the College World Series was Louisville in 2007. After: Rutgers could emerge as the class of the conference. You find the best baseball either down South or out West. The power conferences are the ACC, Pac-10 and SEC. A Big Ten team has not made the CWS since Michigan in 1984. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Now: At the Big East championships in October, Rutgers finished 12th out of 14 teams. Syracuse won the Big East title and finished 14th at nationals. Four other Big East schools made the Top 25. After: The conferences are similar. Wisconsin won the conference title and took seventh at nationals. Two other schools made the Top 25. MEN’S GOLF Now: The Scarlet Knights have made the NCAA Tournament twice since 1983.

  • Predicting Intrinsic Value of NCAA Division I Men's Basketball
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics, 2015, 8, 74-91 74 © 2014 College Sport Research Institute Predicting Intrinsic Value of NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaching Salaries __________________________________________________________ Ryan M. Brewer, Ph.D. Indiana University - Purdue University Columbus Chad D. McEvoy, Ed.D. Syracuse University Nels Popp, Ph.D. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill _________________________________________________________ Men’s head basketball coaches at NCAA Division I programs commonly earn hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars each year, and are commonly paid three or four times as much as their university presidents, yet these wages are currently not rigorously analyzed prior to making hiring choices. Regression modeling reveals that basketball program revenue predicts the vast majority of compensation levels, apart from lifetime successes in NCAA tournaments, each coach’s ratings percentage index (RPI), and lifetime winning percentage. Athletics directors therefore need a tool whereby intrinsic value of their head coaches can be assessed. This study remedies an identified gap in the literature by extending estimates of intrinsic valuation to coaches’ contracts, increasing labor market efficiency. Predicted salaries of contemporary coaches are compared to actual salaries, noting differences. Keywords: Intrinsic value, wages, salaries, coaches, college basketball Downloaded from http://csri-jiia.org ©2015 College Sport Research Institute. All rights reserved. Not for commercial use or unauthorized distribution. Predicting Men’s Basketball Coaching Salaries 75 A USA Today (Berkowitz, Upton, & Durkin, 2012) database showed the average head coach of a team participating in that year’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament was paid more than $1.4 million annually.

COMING OFF THREE STRAIGHT 15-WIN seasons FOR THE first TIME SINCE 1970, THE ARMY WEST POINT MEN’S BasKETBALL PROGRAM TURNS its attention to captURING its first patriot LeagUE championship IN 2015-16. WWW.GOARMYSPORTS.COM WEST POINT The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished repu- tation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of gradu- ates includes some of our nation’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educa- tors, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, chal- lenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis.
