Back in Apalachicola, Saturday, May 2nd is another big day. The Historic Apalachicola Home & Garden Tour starts that morning, and includes a fund-raising luncheon at Benedict Hall. As the tour concludes, the Owl Cafe’s Tap Room opens. It’s an ideal destination for tour-weary travelers to get off their feet, satisfy their appetites, and quench their thirst with local Oyster City Brewing Company beers on tap. A little “liquid courage” might come in handy later that evening during the Chestnut Street Cemetery Ghost Walk – hosted by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society – from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Fantastic days begin just east of Carrabelle at the St. James Bay Golf Resort, too. Break your fast at the Crooked River Grill, and then play 18 holes of championship golf in an Audubon International Certified Silver Sanctuary. After golf, cruise the scenic Franklin County coastline from Carrabelle to Apalachicola. Then, follow the river to Up The Creek Raw Bar. The views from the Wildlife Observation Deck are incredible, and the food’s not too shabby, either. From there, meander to the heart of downtown Apalachicola for a visit to the Oyster City Brewing Company. You can sample new recipes and seasonal brews, and take home cans or growlers of your favorites. Cap off the day with live entertainment at the High Five Dive Bar (formerly Bowery Station), Apalachicola Ice Company, or, if you plan things right, a show at the Dixie Theatre.

CAPE SAN BLAS LIGHTHOUSE & KEEPER’S QUARTERS

In downtown Port St. Joe, you can make a day of it without ever returning to the car! Leave your wheels in the public lot on Williams Avenue, then make your way to the Sand Dollar Cafe for breakfast. Travel & Leisure named it one of the nation’s Top 10 comfort food destinations. Just a few steps away, across Highway 98, is George Core Park, the new home of the Cape San Blas Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters. You can climb the 98-foot tall tower and learn the beacon’s fascinating history. The Gulf County Welcome Center is just a block away on the bayfront, and is filled with information on local attractions. For lunch, it’s back across Highway 98 to Provisions. This popular Reid Avenue eatery is known for outstanding salads and delicious daily specials. It’s the perfect starting point for a downtown shopping excursion, too. Unforgettable experiences await you all along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. As one magical day draws to a close, a tomorrow filled with promise beckons. Answer the call! Make a day of it in Old Florida! 14 MUST SEE FORGOTTEN COAST BY DANIEL ANDERSON FISHING A Seasonal Guide: Part 1 of 3

he waters of Florida’s Forgotten Coast T attract anglers from all over the world. The year-round fishery targets a cyclical parade of trophy species and top-notch table fare. Some species are a constant presence, while others come and go with the changing seasons. Knowing what to target when, where and how, is critical to fishing success – and this guide will help. Part 1 will have you catching fish from January through April – Parts 2 and 3 will cover the rest of the year. JANUARY & FEBRUARY

The two coldest months of the year offer almost identical regional fishing conditions, so the information that follows applies to both. My two favorite cold weather target species – Striped Bass and Vermillion Snapper – have very little in common.

WINTER REDFISH IN THE INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY

TRIGGERFISH ABOUND OFFSHORE YEAR-ROUND

Winter Stripers venture far downstream Drum, Flounder, Sheepshead and the where fresh water from lakes and rivers occasional Largemouth Bass are all likely mixes with the tidal flow from salty bays bycatch – a good problem to have! and estuaries. Cold, cloudy weather will keep them hidden in deep holes, but warm Vermillion Snapper, on the other hand, days and bright sunshine send them on the frequent offshore wrecks and reefs in the move. Find a deep snag in brackish water . You’ll find them in waters near a fork in the waterway – odds are the as shallow as 50 feet, but larger specimens Stripers will be there. Bait of choice? A live seem to like depths of 80 feet or more. Also shrimp fished using a Carolina rig with known as Beeliners, Vermillion Snapper are just enough lead to keep it on the bottom. not picky eaters. They readily accept frozen Although Striped Bass are the intended shrimp and cut baits, but calamari squid quarry, Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black is your best bet. A dropper rig with 2 or 3 SPRING 2020 15 small circle hooks will have you filling the fishbox in no time. Like all Snappers, Beeliners have excellent vision, so lighter leader will yield more bites. Bycatch could be tasty Mangrove Snapper and Flounder, but will likely include out-of-season Red Snapper, Gag Grouper and Triggerfish, too.

MANGROVE SNAPPER

Another excellent winter target for offshore fishermen is Red Grouper. Fishing areas of natural bottom with strips of cut Bonito or TRIGGERFISH SEASON BEGINS MARCH 1, 2020 large, butterflied baitfish will entice a bite from these predators. 16 MUST SEE Triggerfish harvest will continue. That is one incredible month of fishing, and I have yet to mention the best part...when it comes to fishing in April along Florida’s Forgotten Coast, Cobia is king!

Cobia are powerful fish, spectacular table fare, and anglers target them in relatively shallow water. They have a well-earned reputation as picky eaters. One day, they’ll gulp down a bucktail jig or live pinfish without hesitation. The next, they’ll refuse everything you throw at them. The one exception? A live eel, a.k.a. Cobia candy. Put an eel in front of a Cobia, and they simply cannot resist.

Their annual Spring migration brings them to Old Florida from the west, and Cobia fishermen begin the day heading in that direction. Having the Sun at your back helps you spot fish, and turning back east in the afternoon keeps it there. Cobia are primarily caught along the outer edges of sandbars and over nearshore structure, so focus your efforts there. When you hook one, prepare for battle – Cobia put up a heck of a fight.

April is also my favorite month for Redfish. Slot size Reds gather on grass flats and oyster bars in 2 to 6 feet of water, and at ambush points where tidal currents run strong. Find schools of baitfish in the shallows in April, and you’ll likely find Redfish feeding on them. Identifying the natural prey, and using baits that match (or closely mimic) that prey, is a virtual guarantee of success. In a pinch, live shrimp will usually work, too.
