Blue Crabs Announce New Broadcaster Posted by TBN On 04/06/2011 CRABS INK A NEW BROADCASTER FOR THE 2011 SEASON Grandson Of Legendary Broadcaster Harry Caray Becomes New Broadcaster For Blue Crabs The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced that Josh Caray will be the team's new broadcaster for the coming season. Caray will call all 126 games on BroadcastMonsters.com with live video webcasts set on ibnsports.com. Caray comes from a long line of broadcasters as he follows his grandfather (Harry), father (Skip), and brother (Chip) into the broadcast booth. Harry Caray was a major-league baseball broadcaster for 53 years while covering the Cardinals, A's, White Sox and Cubs. He became known nationally while with the Cubs on WGN for leading the crowd in "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch. In 1989, Harry was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame after receiving the Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented annually to a broadcaster for making major contributions to baseball. Skip Caray became known for his 33 years of broadcasting Atlanta Braves baseball games while also serving as a broadcaster for Turner Sports' coverage of the NBA, NFL, college football, college basketball, and the Goodwill Games. Skip is best known in Atlanta for his final call of Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS when a bottom of the ninth, Francisco Cabrera base hit and a safe slide at home by Sid Bream, catapulted the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and into the World Series. Caray was later inducted into the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame in 2004. Chip Caray is currently a television broadcaster for the Atlanta Braves and their regional television station Fox Sports South. In the past he has also served as the lead commentator for TBS' Game of the Week and one of their voices for college football. Chip has also called games for the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Orlando Magic in his career. Josh comes to Southern Maryland from San Angelo, TX where he was a broadcaster, media relations director, and marketing director for the San Angelo Colts of United League Baseball. In the past, Josh has also called games for the Gwinnett Braves of the International League and the Rome Braves of the South Atlantic League. The Blue Crabs open spring training on April 18, with Opening Day scheduled for April 29 at Regency Furniture Stadium against the Somerset Patirots. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. At our annual meeting, Don Coffin proposed that the Committee establish an annual award for excellence in research into the business of baseball. Don and I believe that such an award could raise the Committee’s visibility among academics and other non-SABRites researching in our field, attracting new members and encouraging non- members to send copies of their work to the Committee. Zimmermann's three-run single capped a four-run fourth inning that gave the Nationals a lead they would not relinquish. A.J. Pierzynski's two-run single in the first inning provided an early lead for Braves starter Alex Wood, who surrendered just two hits through the first three innings. "The Woody we love to see and the competitiveness was there," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It was just a lot of pitches and a lot of deep counts." While Wood was lifted after his pitch count reached 100 through five innings, Zimmermann bounced back from some early-inning struggles and retired eight of the final nine batters he faced, while striking out seven. Danny Espinosa paced the Nationals' offensive attack with his third career four-hit performance and first since 2012. "[Zimmermann] helped himself out tonight. The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ February 2021 By Dave Badertscher The 400 Fan Club was able to keep its consecutive Gameboree streak alive by hosting the 55th annual gala as a free virtual event on Zoom on Wednesday evening, January 20. This year’s theme was appropriately “2020: A Season Like No Other.” Due to COVID considerations our traditional cocktail reception, silent auction, raffle, and dinner were not offered. Food and beverages were on you own at home. Approximately 80 attendees and special guests participated in the session. After this enthusiastic, 90-minute celebration of Braves baseball, we could definitely lay claim to hosting the best virtual Eddie Glennon Gameboree ever. Emcee Wayne Coleman opened the Gameboree by introducing the evening’s producer, Harlow Lisak, and Fan Club President Howard Evans. Howard welcomed the attendees and talked about the work of the Club’s Board of Directors, much of which had to be done virtually in 2020. The Board is planning activities for 2021, which will include more monthly Zoom meetings, pre-game socials at Truist Park, a Major League trip to Denver during Labor Day Weekend and, pandemic permitting, minor league trips to Gwinnett and Rome and hopefully to the Braves new affiliate, the Augusta Green Jackets.
