Nonprofit Security Grant Program Threat Incident Report: January 2019 to Present November 15, 2020 (Updated 02/22/2021) Prepared By: Rob Goldberg, Senior Director, Legislative Affairs [email protected] The following is a compilation of recent threat incidents, at home or abroad, targeting Jews and Jewish institutions (and other faith-based organization) that have been reported in the public record. When completing the Threat section of the IJ (Part III. Risk): ▪ First Choice: Describe specific terror (or violent homegrown extremist) incidents, threats, hate crimes, and/or related vandalism, trespass, intimidation, or destruction of property that have targeted its property, membership, or personnel. This may also include a specific event or circumstance that impacted an affiliate or member of the organization’s system or network. ▪ Second Choice: Report on known incidents/threats that have occurred in the community and/or State where the organization is located. ▪ Third Choice: Reference the public record regarding incidents/threats against similar or like institutions at home or abroad. Since there is limited working space in the IJ, the sub-applicant should be selective in choosing appropriate examples to incorporate into the response: events that are most recent, geographically proximate, and closely related to their type or circumstance of their organization or are of such magnitude or breadth that they create a significant existential threat to the Jewish community at large. I. Overview of Recent Federal Risk Assessments of National Significance Summary The following assessments underscore the persistent threat of lethal violence and hate crimes against the Jewish community and other faith- and community-based institutions in the United States. -

Clopper Professor Donald Winford c Rachel Steindel Burdin, 2016 Abstract Intonation has long been noted as a salient feature of American Jewish English speech (Weinreich, 1956); however, there has not been much systematic study of how, exactly Jewish English intonation is distinct, and to what extent Yiddish has played a role in this distinctness. This dissertation examines the impact of Yiddish on Jewish English intonation in the Jewish community of Dayton, Ohio, and how features of Yiddish intonation are used in Jewish English. 20 participants were interviewed for a production study. The participants were balanced for gender, age, religion (Jewish or not), and language background (whether or not they spoke Yiddish in addition to English). In addition, recordings were made of a local Yiddish club. The production study revealed differences in both the form and function in Jewish English, and that Yiddish was the likely source for that difference. The Yiddish-speaking participants were found to both have distinctive productions of rise-falls, including higher peaks, and a wider pitch range, in their Yiddish, as well as in their English produced during the Yiddish club meetings. The younger Jewish English participants also showed a wider pitch range in some situations during the interviews. -

THE STORY OF FOUNTAIN: HARD FACTS AND SOFT SPECULATION Thierry de Duve ABSTRACT Thierry de Duve’s essay is anchored to the one and perhaps only hard fact that we possess regarding the story of Fountain: its photo in The Blind Man No. 2, triply captioned “Fountain by R. Mutt,” “Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz,” and “THE EXHIBIT REFUSED BY THE INDEPENDENTS,” and the editorial on the facing page, titled “The Richard Mutt Case.” He examines what kind of agency is involved in that triple “by,” and revisits Duchamp’s intentions and motivations when he created the fictitious R. Mutt, manipulated Stieglitz, and set a trap to the Independents. De Duve concludes with an invitation to art historians to abandon the “by” questions (attribution, etc.) and to focus on the “from” questions that arise when Fountain is not seen as a work of art so much as the bearer of the news that the art world has radically changed. Mutt, dated 1917, and titled Fountain. The 2017 centennial of Fountain brought us a harvest of new books and articles on the famous or infamous urinal. I read most of them in the hope of gleaning enough newly verified facts to curtail my natural tendency to speculate. But newly verified facts are few and far between. -

‘This will be a popular picture’: Giovanni Battista Moroni’s Tailor and the Female Gaze Lene Østermark-Johansen In October 1862, when Charles Eastlake had secured the purchase of Giovanni Battista Moroni’s The Tailor (c. 1570) for the National Gallery (Fig. 1), he noted with satisfaction: Portrait of a tailor in a white doublet with minute slashes — dark reddish nether dress — a leather belt [strap & buckle] round the end of the white dress. He stands before a table with scissors in his rt hand, & a piece of [black] cloth in the left. CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. 2 The hands excellent — the head low in tone but good (one or two spotty lights only too much cleaned) the ear carefully & well painted — All in good state — The lowness of the tone in the face the only objection — Background varied in darkness — light enough to relieve dark side of face & d. air — darker in left side & below — quite el.1 Eastlake’s description, focusing on the effects of colour, light, and the state of preservation, does not give away much about the charismatic qualities of the painting. With his final remark, ‘quite eligible’, he recognizes one of the most engaging of the old master portraits as suitable for purchase by the National Gallery. Eastlake’s wife Elizabeth immediately perceived the powerful presence of the tailor and made the following entry in her journal: ‘It is a celebrated picture, called the “Taglia Panni.”2 The tailor, a bright-looking man with a ruff, has his shears in his beautifully painted hands, and is looking at the spectator. -

jan | feb | march | 2020 SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF ART from the director Dear Members, Happy New Year! The year 2020 is truly one for celebrating! The Museum continues to present groundbreaking exhibitions, including that of Tatsuo Miyajima. On view through April 19, this exciting installation represents the artist’s first solo U.S. museum exhibition in over two decades and the rare opportunity to experience the captivating and immersive light-based work that embodies his Buddhist practice. In addition, a selection of small-format American paintings will grace a section of Ridley-Tree Gallery in later March, highlighting the important Preston Morton Collection of American art. This installation is an impressive reminder of the breadth of the Museum’s holdings in that area and includes beautiful works by Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Eakins, Walter Gay, and William Merritt Chase, just to name a few. The ever-popular Parallel Stories Lecture Series returns with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jane Smiley in February and former California and U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera in March. In addition, Art Matters makes a comeback this winter season with engaging lectures by eminent scholars on the artists Michelangelo and Frederick Hammersley. Finally, this year marks the beginning of the countdown to the October 11 re-opening of SBMA’s galleries, which have been closed due to the current renovation project. This will be the first time that Members and visitors will have the opportunity to experience the extraordinary transformation of the Museum, including new dedicated exhibition spaces for contemporary art, photography, and new media; a breathtaking re- installation of Ludington Court; a new grand staircase; and refined finishes and state-of-the-art lighting. -

Really, Socialism?!
These contemporary reflections on the trajectory of post-war painting are complemented by a series of screenings and performances. Jen Liu’s video The Red Detachment will examine forms of bodily discipline by tracing the connections between the meat industry and the seminal Maoist ballet of the same name. Anna Rubin will present a rough cut of footage recording her relationship with a Leipzig teenager for whom cosplay serves as a means of reflecting on German history. In the closing event, Arseny Zhilyaev and Chang Yuchen will conclude with performative lectures on art institutions under socialism, respectively, experimental museology and technical life-drawing. Really, Socialism?! intends to spotlight the diversity of official artistic practices in state socialism: not just Soviet Socialist Realism, but also its Maoist apostate Revolutionary Romanticism and the abstract modernism that flourished in former Yugoslavia, among others. Programs include an online reading group on socialist science fiction in collaboration with the New Centre for Research and Practice, focusing on an optimism about technology that seems almost alien today. This exhibition will be complemented by the launch of an online archive that translates, collates and introduces seminal tracts on socialist aesthetics.
