At the time, a celebratory de Blasio was commending the Guyanese community in New York for its industry and contributions that led to Liberty Avenue being co-named Little Guyana Avenue. Such was the feeling of pride and accomplish- ment that the hundreds of New Yorkers gathered for the event did not mind the rainy weather. They were there to celebrate the historic moment, and to soak in the feeling of accomplishment as Guyana’s diasporic footprint grows in New York. Late City Edition Monday 21st February, 2011 ior batsmen, Thisara Perera (11), Angelo Mathews (21) and Chamara Kapugedara (02) were dismissed in quick succession. Thilan Samaraweera was unbeaten on 18 off 10 deliveries. Sri Lanka’s total of 332 for seven is their second highest in World Cups. Perera came in for the side in place of Lasith Malinga, who was nursing a back strain and bowled well picking up three wickets. He dismissed the danger- ous John Davison, who held the record for the fastest hundred in World Cups, when he went through his defence off the first ball of the second over in the innings and could have had a second wicket immediately, but Thilan Samaraweera at first slip failed to hold onto the chance by Zubin Surkari. Perera finished with three for 23, while Nuwan Kulasekara claimed three for 16. There was not much resistance by the Canadian batsmen and Rizwan Cheema towards the end provided some entertainment hitting 37 runs off 25 balls with four fours and two sixes, both off the world’s highest wicket taker, Muttiah Muralitharan. • Kent County Cricketers a to Z
Kent County Cricketers A to Z Part Two 1919-1939 By Derek Carlaw Statistics by John Winnifrith This collection of biographies have been written, on behalf of the ACS, by Derek Carlaw. For those readers wishing to obtain more detailed statistical information, it is recommended that a search is undertaken on the relevant pages of the CricketArchive website ( http://cricketarchive.com/ ). Kent County Cricketers A to Z Part Two 1919 to 1939 Introduction Part Two of the Kent A to Z covers the 92 cricketers who made their entry into first-class cricket for Kent between the wars. With 12 Championship titles, 330 wins and only 49 defeats, Yorkshire dominated throughout the two decades, but Kent could reasonably claim to be the most successful of the Southern counties, twice ending runners-up and in only three seasons failing to finish in the top half of the table. During those inter-war years, cricket was becoming increasingly professional. Of the names listed in the county averages in the 1921 Wisden, over 57% were amateurs. By 1931 the figure had fallen to 41%; and in the last pre-war season it was down to 33%. Kent, in common with one or two other counties, fought hard against the prevailing trend. Throughout the period, they stuck to their long- established policy of endeavouring to field a minimum of three amateurs in every match. In practice, they were quite frequently unable to do so, especially early in the season but, of the 92 cricketers listed in the following pages, 60, i.e. over 65%, were, in the idiom of the time, ‘Gentlemen’.
