For many visitors, arriving in the “Little Town on the Prairie” it is like reading from the pages of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books.

“It stood up in front of her suddenly. It was a big house, a real house with two stories, and glass windows. Its up-and-down boards were weathering from yellow to gray and every crack was battened, as Pa had said. The door had a china knob. Laura opened the door and peeped in.” - ‘By the Shores of Silver Lake’

Imagine you are that little girl named “half pint” and for the first time seeing the inside of the Surveyors’ House. How excited she was to be in such a huge house that actually is not big at all. She wrote of family values, hard work and determination in the settling of the Dakota prairies and Laura Ingalls the building of the little town on the prairie, De Smet. ATTRACTIONS and how many things of interest could be found on 160 acres that at a careless glance looked like all the rest of the prairie.” - Laura Ingalls Wilder, Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography Lured by the prospect of free land from the Homestead Act of 1862, the Ingalls family traveled over a thousand miles in a covered wagon to homestead. They completed the requirements - live on the land for five years, build a home and plow at least 10 acres - in Dakota Territory. Laura’s books share the stories of hard work and sacrifices her family endured to gain title to this piece of Dakota prairie. Today this land is a place for visitors to experience Laura’s stories. Native prairie grasses cover over a hundred acres, period buildings house exhibits that explain homestead life and hands-on activities allow visitors to understand the changes in our agricultural heritage. 12 | De Smet Community Guide 2018 The Loftus Store 4 The Loftus Store Laura wrote of Mr. Loftus and the Loftus store in several of her “Little today House” books.

Daniel Loftus came to De Smet in late 1879 and established the Loftus Store, a general merchandise store that he ran successfully until his death 43 years later. Through his time as owner, Mr. Loftus featured the finest of goods on his shelves, and the store became known as “The Quality Store.” The Loftus Store became the town’s social center: men would play checkers, share the latest area news and discuss crucial information such as when the train would arrive carrying much needed food for the winter. The original Loftus Store still stands on main street (Calumet Ave) and displays memorabilia from times of yore. All are welcome to come on in and live the history. Enjoy the Laura Ingalls Wilder 33 Wilderness Trail & Silver Lake The Laura Ingalls Wilder Wilderness Trail begins at 4th Street & Lyle Ave. Experience Laura’s walk in the fields of the Big Slough. Enjoy the wild grasses, the wild flowers, and the wild life. The Walking Trail to Silver Lake, completed in its first phase in 2008, provides an easy walk back in history with an excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing. It gives tourists as well as residents a walk close to the shores of Silver Lake and the opportunity to experience the area as it was to early homesteaders. It also allows an easily accessible vantage point for the wide variety of birds, wildflowers, grasses, and small animals.

Silver Lake, a pothole lake formed by the melting glaciers, was the site of the railroad camp and the Surveyors’ House. The Ingalls lived in this The beginning of the Trail house when they first came to De Smet. The lake, which is modest in Head for the LIW Walking size, is often inquired about by many of De Smet’s visitors. The lake is Trail to Silver Lake located just east of the city.

“The lake shores went lower and lower toward Big Slough, until really there was no shore. The lake melted into the slough, making small ponds surrounded by the harsh, rank slough grass that stood five and six feet tall. Little ponds glimmered between the grasses and on the water the wild birds were thick.” - Laura Ingalls Wilder, ‘By the Shores of Silver Lake’

14 | De Smet Community Guide 2018 ATTRACTIONS ‘The Garden of Remembrance’ 10 Located on the south side of the De Smet Cemetery on the road to the historical Ingalls grave sites is a quiet haven of stone, plantings, water and labyrinth. This ‘Garden of Remembrance’ is designed ‘for the living’ as a place where all who visit will find comfort and peace of mind. It is place where all can pray and meditate. As you walk around the garden you hear the comforting sounds of water falling and the babbling of the creek. The boulders and rocks - all thoughtfully selected and delivered to the site are each different and unique in their own way - just like people. The labyrinth represents life’s pathway full of twists and turns and definitely not always level ground. As you follow the path, allow yourself to let go of the presence of grief and sorrow and look to the future that we cannot see but must have hope and faith in. When you reach the center boulder and gaze all around you can see so much beauty of life and nature! There are trees, the plants and grasses, the flowers! You can hear the spirits thought the pine trees! Much love, thought and care has gone into the creation of this garden as all work was donated by community members. It is truly “A place that Heaven touches Earth.”

This ‘Garden of Remembrance’ was built in 2008 spearheaded by the De Smet High School class of ‘08 after they had witnessed a great deal of tragedy with classmates and peers. There are no names placed at the Garden as it is for everyone. Many years ago the ground to the west of the Garden was the burial place of 635 plus people who passed away in poorer times and were laid to rest by the county with no recognition. It was previously called a Potter’s Field. It is “For those whose names are known only to God’. Everyone is welcome to help with the care of the plants as it is all maintained through volunteer help. It is handicap accessible and open to everyone. It is a beautiful area that all should take a little time to visit, Scenes from the reminisce on your time in De Smet and feel the serenity. Learn about the Spirit of Manchester, where artist Harvey Dunn was born, where Grace Ingalls Dow “Baby Grace” lived most of her life, and where a 1961 Dakota Territory Centennial Celebration drew nearly 150,000 people. The town was destroyed by a massive F-4 tornado in 2003. This distinctive monument stands at the site of the old Town Hall and includes the historic Town Pump, two places where everyone gathered and shared their sense of community. Enjoy what are often exhilarating sunsets at this site, which is surrounded by many varieties of native South Dakota grasses. You’ll be inspired by the historic spirit of this community and learn about small towns that grew along a railroad as it punched west across the prairie. De Smet Community Guide 2018 | 15 LIVE THE LEGACY... OF THE ‘WILDER’ LIFE Depot Museum / Harvey Dunn School 8 Take a step back in time to the early days of De Smet area residents. The current depot was built in 1906 after a fire on April 23, 1905 destroyed the original one. Pa Ingalls served at the first depot in De Smet. Contrary to the TV series, the Ingalls never actually lived in the depot. The Ingalls family lived in the Surveyors’ House (which can be toured at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society).

ATTRACTIONS The Dakota Central Railway Company owned the first railroad through De Smet. Marvin Hughitt, a Chicago broker, surveyed and bought the railway and surrounding land.

He later sold the land in 1881 to the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company. The De Smet railroad had two passenger trains for many years. One of the trains was referred to as the “400.” The 400 referred to how many minutes it took to travel from Huron, SD to Chicago, Il. The depot was one of the town’s gathering spots.

S. Neal Meyer (local banker) purchased the depot and donated it to the city of De Smet for a museum. Mrs. Doris Thorson gave the city money to refurbish the building. Some of the original lights, windows and fixtures are still in the depot over one hundred years later. The brick walk way on the west of the depot ground was laid by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Depot Museum / Harvey Dunn School Company in 1906.

The museum also has the town’s original fire/curfew bell on Gehm at 854-3274. There is no admission charge. Feel free display. The museum is home to many important artifacts. 16 | De Smet Community Guide 2018 ATTRACTIONS THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF DE SMET ORGANIZED IN 1880, CHURCH HAS HAD INTERESTING HISTORY Reprinted from The De Smet News, June 10, 1921

The Congregational Church at De Smet has a history that dates back to the early days and is closely linked with the development of Kingsbury County. A review of the church since its foundation brings many names of prominent citizens and events of those days to the minds of old timers... The first religious service was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Ingalls, on the banks of Silver Lake, February 29, 1880. Twenty-five people were present at the meeting. De Smet was then in its infancy, with but two houses where the city now stands. It was in June of the same year that the pioneers gathered at the depot waiting room to organize a Congregational Church. The names of eight charter members appear on the records: Rev. and Mrs. Edward Brown, Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Ingalls, Mary Ingalls, Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Gilbert and V.V. Barnes being the organizers. Of these Mrs. Ingalls and Mary Ingalls are still residents of the city and members of the church. Judge Barnes and Mrs. Gilbert are still living, but have long since moved away from the vicinity. The church prospered and quickly became a factor in the town. Meetings were held in the school house for about two years, but during the summer of 1882 a church building was erected. A large building in those days, the Congregational Church was for many years the largest in the county, and today still forms the main body of the rebuilt structure. The money for building was raised by subscription and by aid from the society. It was a little over a year after the completion of the church that the bell was hung, an important event, for it was the first bell in Kingsbury county and marked a step in the progress of this new county. The same old bell serves today, having served the people of the church since December 29, 1883. The first pastor, Rev Brown served until August 1884, when he retired, having attained the age of seventy years, at which age he had desired to retire. It is noticed from the records, however, that he continued to serve his people until the following year, when Rev. J. J. Otis was secured as pastor.

About 10,000 years ago a large glacier covered the De Smet area. The glacier moved southward forming the west side of the Missouri River. As the glacier retreated, it left large stagnant blocks. The stagnant blocks formed the numerous South Dakota sloughs and lakes. Lake Thompson, near De Smet, is the largest glacial lake in the state.

The American Indian entered the South Dakota area during the period, between 5,000-8,000 years ago.

In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson assigned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the territory that would become the state of South Dakota in defense of the Louisiana Purchase. After exploration, Clark referred to South Dakota as the “Land of Plenty”.

The present North Dakota and South Dakota area became the Dakota Territory in 1868. The history of Kingsbury County begins in 1838 when John C. Fremont of the US Army and Dr. Nicolet came through this section. The early settlers found a sea of waving grass when they arrived in the late 1800’s. Kingsbury County was named for George W. Kingsbury of Yankton, a pioneer, editor, historian and legislator.

De Smet was plotted in 1880 and incorporated in 1883. Years later it was dubbed “Cream City,” because of the high cream production.

The first family of De Smet was that of Charles P. Ingalls. He was the timekeeper for the railway construction crew at his camp on the shore of Silver Lake, a mile east of where De Smet was to be built. As construction work ceased in the fall of 1879, he and his wife and four daughters remained in the timekeeper’s building through the winter and spring and built what was to become Ingalls’ store.

By 1883, De Smet was a typical early prairie town. De Smet had about 60 buildings including grocery and provision stores, wagon shops, lumber yards, banks, a drug store, newspaper companies, a flour mill, a church, a school, an elevator, two attorneys, a harness shop, one hotel and two real estate dealers.

On November 2, 1889, President William Harrison issued a proclamation announcing the admission of South Dakota as a state of the great republic of the United States of America. The late 1890’s were years of progress, which brought about the passing of the sod shanty. With the 20th century came the telephone, rural mail routes and the automobile. Progression also brought electric lights by 1910 and the radio by 1920. De Smet was among the early ones to have cement sidewalks and the surfaced streets by the 1950’s.

De Smet Community Guide 2018 | 37 Kingsbury County 11 Courthouse

As Chuck Cecil, states in his ‘Stubble Mulch’ column for the Brookings Register, “Of all the courthouse buildings in South Dakota, the one in De Smet, Kingsbury County, is the most unique and gets my vote as the most beautiful, too.”

Kingsbury County was created February 2, 1880. The County was named after brothers George W. and T.A. Kingsbury, both prominent in territorial affairs. De Smet was chosen as Kingsbury County seat on November 2,

COMMUNITY 1880. On May 30, 1882, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Keep presented the site for the courthouse.

Built in two phases, the east wing built in 1889 and the west wing in 1898, the courthouse is somewhat unusual in that a covered drive through connects the two wings. This drive through was perfect for citizens dropping by for courthouse business during the horse & buggy days, especially if they arrived in stormy weather. It was also used to safely drop off prisoners at the county jail located in the basement and since moved to a new building.

As a building on the Federal Historical Register, renovations done in 1981 focused on maintaining historic significance. These renovations included installing new “old style” doors and duplicate wood moldings and trim throughout the building. On Veterans Day 2016, the community added a memorial on the courthouse lawn that features a bronze statue to represent each branch of the military.

New Businesses in De Smet

De Smet is fortunate to have new businesses opening each year. In 2017, the merging of Maynards and Lewis Drug that included the expansion of the Maynards building has been a tremendous addition to Main Street. It has increased the amount of services, products and hours of availability for our area residents and created a pleasant one stop shopping facility. • Adam Sorenson & Nicole Heisel have opened Dakota Grills Catering on Main Street to bring great catering options to events in De Smet. They specialize in prime rib, fancy pineapple glazed pork loin, smoked marmalade turkey, glazed beef brisket and baby-back ribs along with a full menu. Call 605-323-9589 and 605-847-4713 to order. • The new Dollar General store on Hwy 14 has brought new shoppers to De Smet and also increased the availability of products that our locals previously had to travel to larger metropolitan areas to purchase. This store has attracted the fishermen and campers from Lake Thompson. Visitors traveling through De Smet on Highway 14 and tourists have stopped for items they need. • Ashley Warner has expanded her AFLAC insurance business.

DEVELOPMENT Mike & Rhonda Siefker Our Story

In 2014, Rhonda and Michael were living in Claude, Texas. They took a vacation through the state of South Dakota. Rhonda loves Little House on the Prairie, so Michael surprised her with a stop in De Smet. They enjoyed the area and people and subscribed to the De Smet News Online. There really wasn’t a reason for the subscription, but small-town newspapers tell a lot about the area and people. Meanwhile in Texas, Michael was planning on his retirement from the Amarillo Fire Department after 25 years of service as a Lieutenant and Paramedic. Rhonda and Michael’s goal was to have a small ranch or farm that they could retire to and stay physically active. One day a small acreage came up for sale in the De Smet News. It looked awesome, had trees and was priced better than most Texas properties. Everything fell into place and in April of 2015 South Dakota became their new home. Rhonda is an Enrolled Agent and does all kinds of tax work, financial planning, bookkeeping and works at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society. Michael is an RN in the ER at Sanford in Sioux Falls.

Ryan & Debra Hafey Operate a Nationwide Business The Hafey’s moved to De Smet because they value small town living and like what De Smet and the surrounding area offers. Ryan operates a company called Avid Hawk LLC that specializes in website solutions for businesses, organizations, and local governments. “We are excited to raise our kids in such a wonderful community while continuing to grow Avid Hawk.”

58 | De Smet Community Guide 2018 DEVELOPMENT

Matt & Melissa Kees & Family Moved Back Home Matt Kees grew up in rural De Smet before planting roots and building his family in the Sioux Falls area. Traveling back to De Smet most weekends, it became harder and harder to want to leave only to head back to the hustle and bustle. Our boys loved the freedom of the countryside and we longed to give them a more relaxed childhood. Little did we realize how easy the transition could be! All we had to do was ask! Before we knew it, we were packing up our two boys, Max (9) and Meyer (4) and heading to a little house on the prairie. We both work for Sammons Financial Group based out of Sioux Falls, SD; Matt as a Solutions Architect, Melissa as a Project Consultant, from the comfort of our own home 10 miles north of De Smet. Technology these days affords us the flexibility of being mobile, yet we remain fully connected with our co-workers back in the office and are still close enough to travel to Sioux Falls for the occasional face to face meeting.

Scott & Shannon Palmlund Owners of Palmlund Automotive Born and raised in De Smet, Scott and Shannon Palmlund have seen their community undergo many changes throughout the years. “We value small-town living and felt the progressive community of De Smet had a lot to offer, so we opened Palmlund Automotive in 2008.” In 2012, wanting to add space and have a place of their own, the Palmlund’s purchased a building once known as the De Smet Motor Company. “The building was in need of repairs, be we saw a great deal of potential and loved the history that encompassed our new location.” Palmlund Automotive proudly offers automotive repair, tire sales and service and used car sales on the corner of Highway 25 and 2nd Street.

Glen & Janet Davis Founded Legend Seeds

Glen originally came to De Smet as the Vocational Ag Teacher and Janet as County Extension Home Economist back in the early 70’s. In 1990, they started Legend Seeds, which now serves eight states along with Manitoba, Canada. Legend Seeds has 75 full-time employees, of which 35 work out of De Smet and Willow Lake. “We’re excited about the future. We’re looking forward to continual growth.”
