It’s being released by Trixie DVD, who have also released the Burn to Shine series. Two years in the making, it features a show performed at the 9:30 Club in October 2005, during which Bob played songs spanning his entire career for the fist time in a solo setting with a full band. He was backed by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), Jason Narducy (Verbow, Robert Pollard) and Rich Morel (Bob’s partner in Blowoff). You can get some more details about the show and view the clip here. The clip features most of Sugar’s “A Good Idea” and the audio sounds incredible. Yet another October release I can’t wait for. Share This Turbo Boy Published by thepsychicpilot June 19th, 2007 in Random. 1 Comment Word came out this week that Robert Pollard will be releasing two (yes, two) new albums, Standard Gargoyle Decisions and Coast to Coast Carpet of Love on Merge in the traditional Bob/GbV release month of October (October 9th, to be exact). “We made the decision to break it down into two records, one being the pretty pop record and one being the abrasive punk record, although it’s got some pretty moments also. It’s almost like Guided By Voices; it’s the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other.” http://thepsychicpilot.com/ 6/22/2007.

HOPE VI Redevelopment of Westpark Evaluation: Year III Report Rachel Garshick Kleit, PhD and Lynne C. Manzo, PhD With: Colin-Morgan Cross Allison Stanko Robert Pollard Sara Green EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report summarizes results from the third year of a four-year evaluation of the redevelopment of the Westpark public housing community for the Bremerton Housing Authority (BHA). The evaluation project as a whole, based upon an evaluation plan that BHA approved in 2008, addresses the following five (5) questions: 1. What are the impacts of the HOPE VI redevelopment on the lives of Westpark residents? 2. To what extent has BHA achieved the goals identified in its revitalization plan and Community and Supportive Services (CSS) work plan? 3. To what extent has BHA achieved success in integrating the physical and social aspects of the HOPE VI revitalization strategy? 4. What kind of economic development is generated in the local community as a result of the HOPE VI effort? 5. What is the impact of the HOPE VI redevelopment on community revitalization in the Westpark neighborhood and the City of Bremerton? This report responds to the first, second, and third questions concerning the impact of redevelopment on the lives of original Westpark residents, the achievement of service goals identified in its Redevelopment and CSS Work Plans, and how far along BHA is in integrating the physical and social aspects the HOPE VI revitalization strategy. In order to address these questions, we focus this report on several more specific questions: In general,

DVD Review - The Devil Went Home And Puked - LAist http://laist.com/2009/12/12/dvd_review_-_the_devil_went_home_an.php Client Server DVD Review - The Devil Went Home And Puked It might come as a surprise that former Guided By Voices guru, Robert Pollard, has quietly amassed the best post-GBV year of his career. Never one to sacrifice quantity for quality, 2009 saw the 51-year-old put out no less than six proper albums - most of which were quite good. In fact, three of these records are gonna make my year-end Top Ten List. Cementing ’09 as a high-water-mark in a career full of ‘em, Uncle Bob closed out the year with a smattering of vault releases - a live Boston Spaceships “bootleg”, a Circus Devils greatest hits, a four disc/100 song box of unreleased GBV tracks, and a career-spanning DVD “The Devil Went Home and Puked”. A “video collage” culled from Pollard’s archives, Puked is a dizzying mish-mesh of snippets - a few seconds of live footage here, old newscasts, drunk people acting drunk. It’s an artsy pastiche as lo-fi as anything the band has produced, and certainly, not for the uninitiated. For the converted, Puked is sort of hilarious, sort of intriguing, sort of frustrating, and definitely entertaining. The too short clips had me salivating for the unedited footage. At 60-something ADD minutes with nary a hint at narrative or context, it’s not a treasure trove, so much as a peek at the treasure trove that probably exists in some dusty box in its creator’s basement.

  • Guided by Guided by Voices
Guided by Guided By Voices Marc Lazar Do you remember what it felt like to be a teenager? For some of us, those years are not far removed. For me, now in my 40s, I look back and think of how much I hated being a teenager, how much I tried to distance myself from the age I belonged to, and who I was. All the ways I didn’t quite fit in. To picture me in 9th grade, it helps to understand the distinction between geek and nerd, two terms that were practically interchangeable at the time. Today, geeks can be self- Guided By Voices confident. But, back when I was a freshman, in the D.C. suburbs of the late-80s, all fake colonial-style houses festooned with American flags, there was no such thing as geek “Glad Girls” chic. Professional athletes didn’t yet pose for the cover of GQ wearing plastic frame Isolation Drills glasses and bowties. There weren’t any Marvel Comics movies grossing trillions at the box office. X-Men was for nerds who read comic books alone in their room, only taking a 04/2001 break to rewind their Rush cassettes to listen to Red Barchetta again for the 14th time. TVT Well, at least for me it was. So, clearly, I was a nerd. I had few freshman year friends, carried over from junior high, along with the knockoff Bugle Boy pants I wore most days. "Thomas," who was as embarrassed of being Korean as I was of being Jewish due to the prevailing nerdy stereotypes—and as a result, was in the middle of a phase where he wore a large leather Africa medallion around his neck to school every day.

  • BOSTON SPACESHIPS Our Cubehouse Still Rocks (Guided by Voices Inc.) Street Date: September 7, 2010
BOSTON SPACESHIPS Our Cubehouse Still Rocks (Guided By Voices Inc.) Street date: September 7, 2010 Following three full-length records in only two years, Our Cubehouse Still Rocks is a breakthrough fourth album from Boston Spaceships. Featuring Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), Chris Slusarenko (Guided By Voices) and John Moen (Decemberists), the band began as a long-distance recording collaboration, but brilliantly hit their stride on this album as an unshakable, actualized band. For a group that took their name from the over-the-top UFO illustrations on record covers from 70's arena rockers Boston, there's no denying a classic-rock flag flying high overhead. Just below, however, there's a bustling churn of art-damaged new wave, echoes of Devo, mid-period Wire and the sour songcraft of the Rough Trade stable. From the lead-off near-prog sunshine psyche of "Track Star" to the barn-burning album closer, "In The Bathroom", the 16 songs fly by in a gust of demented, high- energy pop. Pollard's talent in visual arts, especially his fascination with collage, seems to have integrated into the sonic realm on this album. While early GBV had the occasional tape cut-up, compositional collage runs throughout the song- writing here, be it schizophrenic structure or a completely random burst of over- dubbed drum solos. Bouncing from acoustic psych dirges to beer-soaked rock and roll, the record is brimming over with hooks and Pollard's incredible gift for melodies so catchy they shine through even the weirdest musical surroundings. Arguably the best collection of songs from the Spaceships, some of their strongest tunes meet up with expertly-produced sonic landscapes.

  • Boston Spaceships Let It Beard Guided by Voices, Inc
Boston Spaceships Let It Beard Guided By Voices, Inc. Street date: August 2 Let's begin with a bold and yet entirely defensible premise: The new Boston Spaceships double album, Let It Beard, is the most ambitious, varied, sprawling — and yet entirely coherent— record that Robert Pollard has made in his entire career. This is not an accident. Though some—understandably confused by Pollard's ambitious, varied, and sprawling output post-Guided By Voices—may have earlier consigned Boston Spaceships to the "Pollard side-project" pile, (which is admittedly considerable), this is not a side-project. This is a band. This is Pollard's main band. Let It Beard, the fifth Boston Spaceships album in its three year existence, is nevertheless the product of more than half a year's work by that new band, and it shows. Pollard initially delivered to Portland-based guitarist/bassist/keyboardist (and ex-GBV member) Chris Slusarenko acoustic demos of 40 songs. Between the two they whittled down the list to 26, for which Bob sketched a rough sequence. Slusarenko worked out the basic structures and took the songs to drummer John Moen (Decemberists, Stephen Malkmus). Chris and John then banged out the basic tracks over the course of three days in engineer Jonathan Drews' basement studio in Portland. It was Chris' idea that John not hear any of the songs prior to recording, in an attempt to engender some of the tension and spontaneity of early Guided By Voices records, something he felt had been partly jettisoned in the latter stage of that band's illustrious career, in favor of a more professional approach.

Condition: New. New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Marc Woodworth s book covers the album s long and unorthodox period of writing, recording, sequencing, and editing. It includes interviews with members of the band, manager Pete Jamison, web-master and GBV historian Rich Turiel and Robert Griin of Scat Records. At least sixty-five songs were recorded and considered for the album and five distinct concepts were rejected before the band hit upon the records final form. One late version, very nearly released, contained only a few of Bee Thousand s definitive songs. The rest were le out and nearly ended up in the boxes of cassette out-takes cluttering up Robert Pollard s basement. The story of Guided By Voices transformation from an occasional and revolving group of complete unknowns to indie-rock heroes is very much part of the story behind the making of Bee Thousand . In addition to providing a central account of how the record was made, Woodworth devotes another substantial chapter to the album s lyrics. Robert Pollard s lyrics are described by critics, when they re described at all, as a brand of tossed-o surrealism, as if his verbal sensibility is somehow incidental to the songs themselves.
