With more than 130 million people inhabiting an area as big as Greece, Java is one of the most populated places on this planet. No wonder that Java has become Indonesia's political and economic epicenter throughout the history. Administratively, Java is composed of three propinsi (or provinsi; provinces)—West Java (Jawa Barat), Central Java (Jawa Tengah), and East Java (Jawa Timur)—as well as Jakarta Raya (Greater Jakarta) daerah khusus lbukota (special capital district) and Yogyakarta daerah istimewa (special district), both of which are administratively considered provinces. Bali Bali, one of the smaller islands in Indonesia, has been described by many different names - The Hidden Paradise, The Last Paradise on Earth, Morning of The World, Island of Gods, The Island of a Thousand Temples, the Emerald Isle of Asia and Island of the Smiling People. For centuries, Bali has attracted visitors from all over the world, drawn to its Colorful festivals and ceremonies, traditional music and dances, its arts and crafts, delicious cuisine, dramatic underwater world, and friendly people. Whether you want to unwind and chill out on one of Bali's many white sandy beaches, surf the hardcore waves, enjoy some retail therapy in one of the malls or try out your bargaining skills at one of the many traditional markets, there is something for everyone on this tropical island paradise. Why not be adventurous and try some white-water rafting or deep-sea diving? Or simply relax and clear your mind practicing Yoga or Tai Chi. Bali offers you the best of both worlds. Places in the trip Yogyakarta Yogyakarta, or Jogjakarya, or Yogya in short, is one of Indonesia’s main tourist destinations. The city is the capital of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, on the south of Java. The city is a renowned centre of education, classical art and culture such as music, poetry and puppet shows. The bustling town has a population of about half a million people and offers a wide range of tourist facilities. Our Happy Trails Office in Yogjakarta is also here to give assistance that might be needed. One is always welcome to come in for a cup of coffee and a nice chat with one of our staff. Why Yogyakarta? Yogyakarta being a laid back city, allows for a great exploration of the Indonesian/Javanese culture. The various attractions in the surroundings such as Borobudur, Prambanan and the Sultan’s palace all have new normal practices in place, and comprise of large areas which allow for easy social distancing. There is nice bungalow accommodation available, in strategic locations. Solo Solo is a major city in Central Java. Together with Yogjakarta the two cities are the heirs of the Mataram Kingdom that split in 1755. The city of Solo lies some 100 kilometres south of Semarang and some 60 kilometres east of Yogjakarta. As Solo is less touristy than Yogjakarta, the city has kept much of its Javanese character. The inhabitants of the city are known to be charming and soft- spoken. The Museum Batik Danar Hadi is known as the largest Batik collection, with over 10.000 pieces of batik. Why Solo? Solo is not often visited by tourists, nevertheless a worthy stop on the way to the Bromo Vulcano. By stopping in Solo, clients can visit a lesser known sultan’s palace with barely any tourists. Further the drive from Solo to Bromo can be done mainly via toll roads, avoiding trains. Bromo Mount Bromo is world-famous for its unique volcano sunrise. Visitors can look down the crater which is full of smoke, feel the cold air brushing their cheeks while enjoying the breath-taking sunrise from atop the volcano. There are many activities to do in the area, including camping, horse riding to the sea of sand or general trekking. The area has long been settled by the Tenggerese people. What makes the Tenggerese so unique is that they have kept their strong customs and culture without being influenced by the outside. Why Bromo? Bromo National Park, being a natural wonder allows for lots of possibilities to explore the caldera whilst avoiding crowds. We offer alternative viewpoints, and trekking which are crowd-less and give a unique view of the volcano. Ketapang/Ijen Ketapang is a ferry port located in Kalipuro, Banyuwangi, East Java. This port connects the island of Java to Bali. the name Ketapang comes from many Terminallia catappa plants or called Ketapang by the locals. This area is also famous for the beaches and view of the karst. Why Ketapang/Ijen? Near Ketapang, there is a lot to experience in nature, may it be the Ijen Volcano trekking or a plantation walk in Kalibaru. A great place to stop before heading over to Bali, whilst enjoying some natural wonders in a safe way. We have selected nice bungalow style accommodation near the beach. Pemuteran Located at about 130 kilometres to the north of Denpasar lies Pemuteran. This wilder area offers pristine and quiet black-sandy beaches. The area is well-known for its number of major Hindu temples. As Pemuteran is located between a rocky mountain and the sea, the Hindus believe it possesses a lethal spiritual power called Nyegara Gunung. People come here to get away from the busy city to relax and take strolls over the white sandy beaches. Another popular attraction here is the world’s largest artificial bio-rock reef project – ideal for diving. Another great place to visit is the Bali West National Park, not far from Pemuteran. Why Pemuteran? The fisherman village of Pemuteran has bungalow type of accommodation and is ideal for a holiday with social distancing. Especially the private villa’s offer the great opportunity for relaxing time, as a couple, a family or a group of friends. Villa’s with up to 6 rooms are available. Excursions can be made from here to places in the nature, with limited use of car transportation. Snorkeling can be done without any transportation, right from the beach where there is an “artificial coral built” project. When bringing your own snorkel it is the ideal activity with social distancing. Munduk Munduk is a remote town situated in the north of Bali. The village sits atop a ridge running down from the north- western rim of the Bedugul caldera. The ridge tumbles steeply on either side into the green valleys below, where distant paddy and spice plantations create a spectacular scene both to the north and to the south. As the village is located approximately 800 meters above sea level, the temperature is a slightly cooler and less humid compared to the lowlands in the coastal areas. Munduk is a wonderful place for trekking and visits to the plantations and the famous Ulun Danu Temple. Places of Interest Twin Lake (Buyan and Tamblingan) Lake Buyan and Tamblingan, is located in the District Sukasada, approximately 21 miles South of Singaraja City. Lake Buyan is one of three twin lakes formed within a large caldera. This lake is flanked by two other lakes, namely Lake Tamblingan in the west and in the east of Lake Bratan. Buyan Lake is the largest of the three. Among the Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan separated by forests along approximately one mile. There is a pool that is connected directly to the lake Buyan through a narrow channel called Telaga Aya. The cool weather surrounded Why Munduk? Munduk is a remote destination where social distancing can be applied easily. The accommodation is in separate bungalows, no big buildings in this place. Excursions can be made from here to places in the nature, without using or limited use of car transportation. by mountains that completely green, quiet and comfortable atmosphere. Sanur Wedged in between the busier Denpasar in the west and the ocean in the east, Sanur is Bali’s compromise of the bustling south and tranquil north.

  • Report on Menjangan Island's Coral Reef
REPORT ON MENJANGAN ISLAND’S CORAL REEF: A BALI BARAT NATIONAL PARK MARINE PROTECTED AREA BY ORLA DOHERTY1, CAROL MILNER1, PHILLIP DUSTAN2, STUART CAMPBELL3, SHINTA PARDEDE3, TASRIF KARTAWIJAYA3 AND ABIGAIL ALLING1 ABSTRACT Menjangan Island is located off the coast of NW Bali. The island and surrounding waters lie within a Marine Protected Area (MPA), as part of the Bali Barat National Park (BBNP), officially formed in 1984. Although many organizations have surveyed this reef area over the span of four decades, this is the first time that data on reef quality is compared over a nine year timeframe, from 2002 until 2011. From 19 March to 10 April 2011, eleven sites were studied: eight were located within Bali Barat National Park (BBNP) and three were located outside. The sites were clustered into areas identified as “BBNP Menjangan Is.” (sites surrounding Menjangan Island), “BBNP Sumber Klampok” (sites adjacent to the mainland) and “Sumber Kima” (sites outside the MPA). Sites within BBNP Menjangan Is. contained the highest mean cover of live hard corals (42%) although these sites also had the highest incidence of fishing gear and damaged coral colonies. Comparisons of the benthic substrate data in 2011 with data collected in 2002 suggests that there was an overall increase in coral coverage in each of the 3 areas, as well as an increase in the damage to live hard corals. The two areas within BBNP had more than twice as much fish biomass in comparison with the area outside BBNP. Using the Index of Fish Diversity in the Indo Pacific region (CFDI; Allen and Werner, 2002), fish species were judged to be moderately diverse within the BBNP and poorly diverse outside.

  • Red Island Travel Information Guide
2019 Information Guide Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to consider a stay with us in our little slice of paradise here at Red Island. I was first introduced to this area by our local partner in 2007 and at that stage there was no infrastructure whatsoever. We would spend our days sitting under the pandanus trees surfing, eating, sleeping, and repeating with no other tourists in sight. Fast forward to 2019 and we now offer private rooms with A/C, Wifi access, a swimming pool, amazing food and comfortable hang out areas. Whilst the comfort level has improved, the vibe in the village remains the same, quiet, peaceful and idyllic. This accompanied with consistent fun waves makes Red Island a must see. Many of our older guests that visit relate it to how Bali was in the 70’s, before the mainstream of surfers started to flock in. Fortunately, Red Island has managed to avoid this movement entirely. With that said, we would like to share this experience with you and highly encourage you to come visit Red Island, to witness its charming appeal and give yourself the chance to experience that ‘this is how life should be’ feeling that only truly special places give you. Yours in Surfing, Mike McComas and the Red Island Travel crew Getting to Red Island from Bali: We offer a private overland transfer for guests wanting to experience the scenic drive and waves of Bali/Java that are less frequented by western tourists. Travel time is approximately 6-7 hours from Kuta/Seminyak/Canggu area, including a ferry ride to break the drive up.
