Warren Krause Collection contains 14 boxes of information gathered by M. Warren Krause and his wife, Betty Fennemore Krause, for publication of the The Arizona Guide. Krause, M Warren- 1 of 45 Arizona Historical Society at Papago Park, 1300 N. College Avenue, Tempe, AZ 85281 Phone: 480-929-0292 ext. 174, Email: [email protected] Published over a 35-year period from 1938 to 1972, except from May 1942 - December 1944 during World War II, the Guide was a source of information about places to go and things to do in Arizona, it also contained a calendar of current events and activities in the state, maps and advertising. After Mr. Krause’s death in 1972, his wife and his son, John K. Krause, continued to edit and publish until mid-1975. The collection consists mainly of promotional pamphlets and brochures from Arizona cities and towns, and points of interest, from the 1930s to the 1960s. These are arranged alphabetically by cities and towns and by county, with a special section for resorts and guest ranches. The resorts and ranches are further divided into geographical areas. Among the brochures and pamphlets are some from Mexico and states bordering Arizona, especially New Mexico. There are informational leaflets from Southern California, and a few pamphlets from Utah, Nevada and Southwestern Colorado. The four boxes of newspaper articles and clippings from The Arizona Republic, dated mostly in the early 1950s, are arranged alphabetically by cities and towns and under general subjects and points of interest. These headings are self-explanatory, and may be useful when used in conjunction with the promotional material. Of interest are the special newspaper sections on specific Arizona localities. One box is devoted to newspaper clippings on Arizona history topics such as mining, camels, gunfighters, pioneers and Mormons. Included are many “Arizona Days and Ways” columns by Roscoe G. Willson. There are several special publications and magazine articles of historical interest, fully described in the accompanying index. Also, there are two boxes of material under general headings that relate to articles and information published in The Arizona Guide. They cover a wide range of subjects about Arizona, including drives and trips, Indian arts and crafts, parks, agriculture, flora, fauna, and hunting and fishing. There is a small amount of miscellaneous correspondence concerning various topics for publication in the Guide dated from 1939 to 1971. The letters relate to permission to publish, transmittal, inquiry, corrections to copy, and Arizona flora. There is a resume of John Fennemore Krause (c. 1964), drawings which were used as illustrations in the publication, and operating statements. In addition to this collection, there is: (1) The M. Warren Krause Map Collection (see attached list); and (2) The extensive Warren Krause Photograph Collection, containing 760 photographs. The photos cover archaeological sites and Indian ruins, national monuments, Southwest Indians, Mexicans, points of interest, cultural events, historical buildings, flora, fauna, business activities, scenery and subjects that generally correspond to the indexed headings in this collection.
