    PROGRAM NOTES Disney in Concert: Around the World Quincy Symphony Orchestra September 29, 2019 Quincy, IL Notes by Dr. Paul Borg We begin our season with a generous offering of music from the films of the Walt Disney Company [Walt Disney Productions until 1986]. When Walt Disney died in 1966, the corporation continued his inspired and successful animated-film output. Although not all of nearly 200 animations, live-action films, television series, documentaries, or videos are equally memorable, everyone today has heard many of the songs associated with the films, whether from viewing the films, listening to recordings, or in live concerts such as this one. In the late 1920s and 30s films had newly been furnished with recorded sound, giving motion pictures real-time spoken dialogue among the characters as well as music that could entertain with songs embedded in the storyline. Music could also be employed to enhance or evoke a particular emotion--think the spooky two-note shark approach in Jaws or the "screeching" of the knife in the shower scene of Psycho. Walt Disney and his brother Roy extended these sound element to animated cartoons, short at first (Steamboat Willie) and eventually feature length (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). Disney's intent to continue a series of fairy tale animations was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he and his collaborators produced a series of training and propaganda films, even using Donald Duck in some comical short sketches. After the war, Disney turned his vision to television and then his entertainment parks, starting with Disneyland in 1955.

The first part of the thesis introduces Lloyd Webber’s biography, his close collaborators as well as his production company the Really Useful Group and description of all his works. The main part of the thesis is aimed at his musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar , rather their origin and development, the main plot and their main characters that have many things in common. Both these musicals are based on topics from the Bible. The thesis also deals with the librettos and their translation into Czech. By BARRY SINGER Correction Appended NAME the most important lyric writers of the past half-century. Stephen Sondheim, without question; the lyricist who single-handedly deepened the American song tradition with penetrating verbal invention and an enlivening dose of psychological complexity. But also Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, folk balladeers who infused lyric writing with the imagery and confessional aspect of modernist poetry. Their innovations created an entirely new tradition, or perhaps antitradition -- that of the self-absorbed singer-songwriter for whom, in the name of personal expression, all lyric-writing rules could be broken. It's a tradition that still dominates, having produced hordes of disciples, including many truly gifted lyricists, ranging from Bruce Springsteen and Lou Reed to Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel, from Elvis Costello and Tom Waits to Beck, Rufus Wainwright and Fiona Apple. Increasingly, though, to write in the classic, urbane style of Hart, Gershwin, Berlin, Porter and Sondheim is to discourse in a dead language. Their notion of lyric writing as a craft, a verbal equivalent of melodic composition, grounded in wit and elegant wordplay, is today so thoroughly antiquated that one can barely find a context for it.

    BROADWAY NOIR: FILM NOIR AND MUSICAL COMEDY IN CITY OF ANGELS (1989) BY JASON CHARLES WITT THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Music with a concentration in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Master’s Committee: Professor Jeffrey Magee, Chair and Director of Research Professor Gayle Sherwood Magee Abstract City of Angels (1989) uniquely transforms the structural, thematic, and visual elements of film noir through the conventions of musical comedy and thereby subjects both genres to affectionate satire. This essay explores the connections between these idiosyncratic forms of entertainment, particularly in the ways that noir devices and tropes emerge from songs penned by Cy Coleman and David Zippel, to reach a greater understanding of the ways in which City of Angels depicts and comments on the cultural history of film noir. My methodology looks to literary criticism and philosophy written on both film noir and hardboiled fiction for theorization on the core elements of those genres. Those traits are measured against City of Angels as a work, primarily musically but also in its lyrics and dialogue, using frameworks presented within the work of Raymond Knapp, Stacy Wolf, Scott McMillin, and other scholars of musical theatre. Where relevant, I engage with histories, music theory, and non-scholarly publications for social context and reception. The essay is organized along archetypal lines, namely the private investigator and femme fatale, to show how those models inform the show’s gendered characterization. It exposits indices for the 1940s and the classic Hollywood era, all pointing toward a framework where the musical comedy can function as a cultural history.
