History of the PRCUA Part 4 - Compiled by Kathryn G. Rosypal, Executive Editor

At the turn of the century, there were more Polish Catholics in Chicago than the churches could hold. One new parish after another was established in the City, and Polish Catholics were very verbose about wanting a Polish bishop to meet their spiritual needs. The PRCUA - as the largest and most powerful Polish Catholic organization in America - did everything possible to influence the Pope to appoint a Polish bishop, including meeting with Archbishop Albin Symon, the Pope’s emissary who was sent to Chicago to investigate the situation. In May of 1908, Rev. Pawel Rhode, Pastor of St. Michael’s Church, was Bp. Paul Rhode, 1st appointed auxiliary bishop of Chicago by Pope Pius X. He was born in American Bishop of Austrian-Poland and came to the U.S. with his mother at the age of 9, settling Polish ethnicity PRCUA gathering in the Great Hall (1937) (PRCUA Collection, PMA Archives) (PMA Archives) in Chicago. Since he was the first Pole in America to be named a bishop, over 200,000 people gathered in the streets of Chicago on the day of his consecration, July 29, 1908, to watch a parade in his honor. Over 20,000 uniformed honor guards from church societies and militia groups, 700 Polish priests, as well as a delegation from the PRCUA and other Polish fraternals proudly marched behind the Bishop. It was a glorious and victorious day for Polish Catholics - at last, a Polish bishop! In November of 1912, Bishop Rhode blessed the cornerstone for the new PRCUA headquarters that would be built at the corner of Milwaukee and Augusta on Chicago’s near northwest side. This area was known as the “Polish Triangle” (intersection of Milwaukee, Division and Ashland). This was the primary hub for Poles in Chicago at that time. Churches, fraternal organizations, banks, stores Background scenery behind Great Hall stage (Courtesy of PMA Archives) and businesses in the area all catered to PRCUA headquarters with its rounded facade (PMA Archives) Polish immigrants. Milwaukee Avenue could easily accommodate 2,000 people. Measuring 70 ft. wide, was then Chicago’s main thoroughfare leading to Wisconsin. (Continued in next issue) Construction continued throughout 1913 and by the fall it was completed at the cost of $163,151.13. According to an article in Narod Polski in 1912, the building was designed to have a basement with a boiler room (with 2 boilers for central heat), storage areas, coal bin, 42’x70’ newspaper print shop and a 40’x42’ press room. The first (street level) floor boasted 6 large storefronts that were projected to rent for $700 per month. At the rear of the first floor - now the Social Hall - was the newspaper typesetting room. The second floor featured the offices of the PRCUA president, secretary, treasurer, editor and general office staff. There was also a 12’x20’ directors meeting room, a 20’x49’ committee room PRCUA Typesetting Room (1919) (PMA Archives) and a 16’x26’ room for the PRCUA Library. There were also 8 small offices for the PRCUA to rent out to doctors, lawyers etc. Over the printing room was a small 4-room apartment for the janitor/guard who was entrusted with the care of the building. HICKORY HILLS, IL - In 1975, the PRCUA Adult Culture Group - in an effort to raise funds for scholarships Pres. J. Drobot, E. Muszalski, C. Steczek, M. Brzezniak, J. Drobot, given to the candidates in the M. Brzezniak’s daughter Veronica and granddaughter Deanna Crouchelli Moms and M. Konopnicka Adult Culture Group members Cinderella-Prince Charming Ball - hosted its 1st Spring Fashion Show. Thirty-eight years later, the M. Konopnicka Adult Culture Group continues this honored tradition. The talents of Cinderella and Prince Charming Ball candidates, moms, as well as Adult Culture Group members were showcased throughout the 2013 Spring Fashion Show. Held on Sunday, March 3, at the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills, IL, the event was chaired by Bonnie Zawora and Halina Avila. The "Rockin Spring Fashion Show" opened with our very own special guest, Polish Elvis, Jarek Spychalski. As the show continued, commentators Teresa Skorusa and Tom Frankowicz took time to commemorate today's Fashion Show in memory of Sue Buras, the Foundress of the Fashion Show. Sue Buras had inspired us all to be the best runway models that we could be and will be deerly missed. Her ideas, 38 years later transformed into a phenomenal fundraiser bringing forth great models from our own members and candidates and fashions by Dress Barn, Deb's, Men's Warehouse, Windsor, Christina's Bridal, ABA Tuxedo, and Kimberly Bond Boutique. Terri and Tom, with grace and charm, presented the models to some good old rock n’ roll music. With a “Rock N’ Roll Music is here to stay” motto, teen girls danced and modeled spring fashions. The teen boys looked debonair in suits from Men's Wearhouse. The lovely moms put on their dancing shoes as they flirted with Elvis during "Hunk of Burning Love." The teens showcased prom dresses and suits. We "Rocked Around the Clock" with CinderellaKelsey Cetnarowski and Prince Charming Daniel Zuk, 2013 Runners-Up Camilla Steczek and Jeremiah Stanek and 2012 Runners-Up Kimberly Skrzypiec and Timothy Eckert. Wonderful guest entertainers Wesoly Lud dancers, under the artistic directors/choreographers Misia and Richard Jaminski, performed "Dziadek Polka". The music and the talent took everyone back to their first sock hop, with poodle skirts and young love. Young models Nicole Johnson, Anna Tumiel, Anna Richardson, Joanna Burdzy, Katarzyna Burdzy, Teresa Czerwien, Ola Muszalski, Emilia Kroplewski, Karolina Kroplewski, Mathew Schab and Nicholas Schab performed a number choreographed by Kasia Avila to "Tutti Frutti" The HHPD Company dancers, Elise Schall, Gigi Aggozino, Ashley Udaykee, Katie McGee and Andrea Mitrofski, directed by Liz Dynowski, performed an exciting jazz dance to "Blue Suede Shoes." The finale featuring Cinderella and Prince Charming and 2013 candidates dressed to the nines from Christina's Bridal and ABA Tuxedo, as they danced to a “Love Me Tender” serenade by Elvis. Ed Muszalski, President of the M. Konopnicka Adult Culture Group, thanked everyone for making the event a huge success. He appreciated all the hard work done by Committee members: Halina Avila, Bonnie Zawora, Danuta Stypula, Gabriela Zuk, Walter and Liz Dynowski, Angie Muszalski, Mary Brzezniak, Veronica Crouchelli, Diane Cortesi, Stanley and Mary Dron, John Frankowicz, Vickie Kroplewski, Danielle Kroplewski, Krystyna Lech, Anita Richardson Jola Stanek, and Monica Pazdiora. The excitement continued as audience members won raffle prizes and money raffles. The donations, gifts, prizes and time contributed by so many in order to make this 38th anniversary fashion show a huge success is greatly appreciated by the M. Konopnicka Adult Culture Group.
