Stay home, Stay safe & Keep reading! - Praneet Bubber (NGD '90) BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING July 11, 2020 SANAWAR GIRLS EXPEDITION TO MT. KILIMANJARO August 2019

Climbing members: Mrs. Priya Dhillon, Major Priya Jhingan, Meghan Bhagirath (VGD U6), Avanti Aggarwal (NGD L6), Ishampreet Kaur Ahuja (NGD U6), Mahika Goel (HGD U6), Ananya Panchhar (VGD L6), Kashish Pathania (VGD U6) and Roshni (HGD (U6). Expedition Coordinators: Padma Shri Mr. Ajeet Bajaj (OS '83), Mr. Chander Lal, Mr. Umed Singh and Mr. Venkatesh Maheshwari

The untold story behind one of the greatest adventures in Sanawar’ s history was revealed. The sweat, tears, pain and exhilaration.

Breaking the glass ceiling, the girls of Sanawar, scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest single free- standing mountain in the world, a dormant volcano at 19,340 metres above sea level. Their journey to the top of Kilimanjaro was the best experience of their lives. It truly exceeded all expectations. It brought new experiences to be cherished for the rest of their lives. Their stories and ability to get prepared and ready for the climb proved to themselves that they had the strength, ability and persistence in the face of this mighty mountain.

They made us believe that they can achieve anything that they put their minds to and truly represented the Sanawarian spirit of ‘Never Give In’! "Great things happen when men/women and mountains meet. " - Mrs Priya Dhillon (OS '88)

Jambo, (Hello) "Go where u feel most alive this is exactly how I feel whenever I climb”. Growing up in Sanawar, following my passion to climb by enrolling in various courses in mountaineering in N.I.M. Uttarkashi, a never to be missed opportunity to climb with the Girls expedition team to Mt. Kilimanjaro given to me by Mr. Pandey, our Headmaster was thrilling. It was a journey to climb a beautiful mountain in a beautiful land with Team Sanawar... the team with the, "Never give in" spirit from start to finish. The team which stood together, encouraging, laughing, helping and stretching themselves to the limit through four temperature zones was beautiful. Never letting anyone limit them, doubt never entering their young minds, a great sense of self belief and will power, admiring everything and appreciating everyone was extremely satisfying. To reach beyond one's fears and doubts, embracing Mrs Priya Dhillon (OS '88) people of another land all in one pursuit...that of climbing the mountain. Camaraderie, humility, respect and team spirit, is what was learnt by me with this young team. And yes, "take every chance, drop every fear," is what should be the ones guiding light, for, to miss opportunities is to miss a large part of life itself. And like Edmund Hillary said, It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves, "so go where you feel most alive." Asante Sana (Thank you) Mr. Pandey, Mr. Ajeet Bajaj, Chand, Venki, Umed, Sebastian and everyone on the team and yes of course the 'Never Give in Spirit of Sanawar, the best

In a story apt for the movies, one of tears, sweat and exhilaration, seven boys of Sanawar created history by setting two records for scaling the highest peak in the world. First, by becoming the youngest team to summit the top of world and second, Raghav Joneja (15 years) became the youngest Indian to scale the peak.

The invigorating webinar was the first time the entire team got together to share their experience with the OS fraternity. Receiving a fantastic response the webinar showcased the boys and the support team as they took us along on their hair-raising journey by sharing their emotions and anecdotes from the expedition!

They say it's easier to go down a hill than up. As with everything else, Everest proved this wrong. 16 hours uphill, an exhausting yet successful conquest, the way back to camp 3 was the scariest thing I have ever encountered. That is when I had to keep reminding myself "Never, never, NEVER give in." Usually people can't see because it's too dark, I was blinded by the light, white, which gave me a sense of what living on the edge is, there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. - Shubham Kaushik

'Why climb Everest? Ever since the first successful ascent (maybe second) of Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, mankind has always been fascinated with the idea of pushing the boundaries of human endurance, will and strength at the altitudes where our bodies aren't simply designed to function. The idea of climbing Everest has changed its meaning in the past 60 years. People climb Everest for all the different reasons. The meaning of Everest shouldn't be just limited to a mountain top, but facing up to your personal challenges. It represents the idea of being able to overcome the biggest obstacles of life, you look forward to. Take the first step, go out, explore, find your Everest and work hard enough for it, you'll get there one day. Through the summer months and now into early fall, we have been surviving the COVID lockdowns by keeping in close touch with OS across North America and with Sanawar, of course.

Individually and in small groups, we have been meeting in socially distanced ways with one another, whether on the golf course in North Carolina or for patio lunches in DC and Chicago, whether hiking in Montana or meeting for drinks and dinner in San Francisco and Toronto! And we continue to connect with old and new friends on the OSNA WhatsApp page and through the redesigned OSS website.

In July, we hosted the first ever college webinar entitled “Fall Semester 2020 in US and Canadian Universities,” the recording of which was later viewed by well over a thousand audience members. Addressed to OS parents and students in on how to best negotiate the fall semester during the pandemic, the panel included faculty from the US and Canada, as well as college-going students, both OS and children of OS.

And with the easy availability of remote meeting platforms, the four North American chapters— Eastern and Western Regions (USA), Toronto, and Vancouver--have formed an EU-style coalition to bring the OS here closer still. So, expect great joint programming in the future, beginning with the Leadership Series of talks slated for early 2021, followed by a fun, Sna-style camping/hiking trip in July-August!

PANKAJ SAPRU [H-1983] My earliest lessons in Photography came from watching Dad set the self-timer on his Rolleiflex 2.8F. And then came Dhiraj, who seemed to carry about him a certain inner calm that could, at times, be misconstrued for aloofness. That calmness and his keen observation reflects in his body of work, especially in his pictures of Sanawar – capturing the pristine, seductive campus in the late afternoon sun, a soft golden glow. Nice and quiet, just like him. As Arvind Hoon said to me the other day, “Being a late starter in the world of photography, I would use my DSLR like a machine gun. Dragging Dhiraj along on full-day visits to the Dal Lake, I would return with several hundred images and his response would be, “not a single shot today”, accompanied with a wry grin. It was Dhiraj who taught me to slow down and start looking. In time, I learnt from him and his images, that Photography can’t be rushed. It will happen, in good time.

ARVIND HOON [V-1981] Taking valuable lessons from Mathew Parel in Sanawar, he graduated with Honours in Pol. Science from Hindu College in 1984. 20-odd years later, having burnt out in the mad world of Advertising, he picked up a camera to professionally build a Speciality practice in Hospitality Photography. This career move provides him ample opportunity to travel on work, giving birth to his personal photography work or PLAY, as he likes to call it, in Street Photography. DIWAKER SINGH [N-1975] A Technology Entrepreneur and Investor by profession. A self-trained photographer who describes himself as a ‘Visual Storyteller’. Based in London, photography brings him to India at least 4 times a year … to the remotest corners … to photograph people, cultures and traditions that are endangered. He believes that Photography is what helps him stay SANE in today’s high-pressure business environment. COVID is just a momentary pit-stop. Diwaker started out with a Kodak Brownie at 8, and owned a second-hand Nikon F while still in Sanawar. He is presently working on a Book that will showcase his BEST. He was awarded the prestigious ‘Photographer of the Year Award’ for 2019 by the YPO – the Young Presidents’ Organization

Since covering the Maha Kumbh Mela way back in 2001, Karoki embarked on a life-long project documenting the act of Pilgrimage around the world, using Photography as well as Audio. He also conducts Travel Photography workshops. He was a prize-winner in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2009 of various “Travel Photographer of the Year” competitions. Harbans Nagpal, NBD 1964, Chair Vivek Ahluwalia VBD 1975, Vice Chair

The Old Sanawarian Poetry Circle, OSPC, is an initiative that took birth in July 2020 as an online presence, with the prime criterion of membership being that one should be an OS, and interested in the magic of Poetry.

Only English poems are read out. This is a poetry reading group as against a poetry writing workshop.

The group of current members is close to 20 (literally from all over the globe), of which around a dozen are present at the pre-designated day of the second Wednesday of each month at 9.30 pm IST.

The poetry can be self-written or from living/deceased poets. Poems are submitted to the Chair, without mentioning the poet’s name. One by one these are read out by the submitting member, and a free-wheeling impromptu discussion follows. A text version of the poem is shared just before the reading. We want to discuss the poem as it stands, no matter who wrote it. The emphasis is on what we can get out of the poem. We are in critical but also in serious, modest and learning mode. We do not have all the answers. The poets of this world are our teachers. We hope their poems will help us understand, take us forward.

After the discussion we learn the poet’s name and a letter of appreciation is sent to living poets to express our thanks.

Meetings are usually 1.5 hours long, and a summary - including all the poems - are put up on the OS website under “Special interests Groups- The Poets Corner - Events” by the Vice Chair. This serves as archival material for all to enjoy. We also would be putting up short audio excerpts from the Zoom meetings soon. Our aim is to include many more members over time and to truly be able to get interested colleagues to participate.
