The 47 Marist martyrs belong to 14 different dioceses of the country. In small parishes, in families and Chris- tian communities, the faith in Jesus Christ was passed on to them through baptism and they were in- cluded on the list of believers. Religious profession, made in ma- turity, solidly confirmed their option for Jesus Christ. And the spilling of their blood sealed definitively the option that began with their baptism. This witness of fidelity is personified by a large group of young brothers who gave their lives while sowing in the fields. They participate in the honor at the altar, joined to a larger group of contemporaries belonging to other orders or reli- gious congregations, whose lives were interrupted by the same storm; another ecclesial sign of communion in the same faith. To- day we proclaim them blessed, eternally happy, because their lives have been fruitful for God, for the Church and for the Institute. John Jago, S.M., Mary Mother of our Hope 4 Introduction This book is an offshoot of the courses in Marist Spirituality that I have been offering since 1986 at the Center for Marist Studies in Rome and the Marist House in Framingham, and in 1992 at St. Anne’s Presbytery in London. In 1991 I decided that the mélange of photocopied English translations of texts that I was using then needed to be expanded. I also wished to make the texts available in their original languages. These will be found in the French edition. Because the book is structured around the three symbolic moments of Fourvière, Cerdon and Bugey, which the Constitutions of 1988 offer as the framework both for Marist formation and for the whole of Marist life, the book should be of use not only for Marist renewal programs, but for those involved in Marist initial formation and for any Marist who seeks a deeper grasp of Marist spirituality through a thematic study of texts significant in our spiritual tradition. The texts are collected and presented here with little or no commentary. It is for the reader to meet Colin and the other founders and early Marists in their own words, and to let those words open up new paths of insight, of feeling and of action.

    VOWS IN THE SECULAR ORDER OF DISCALCED CARMELITES Fr. Michael Buckley, OCD The moment we hear the word “Vows” we think automatically of religious. The “vows of religion” is a phrase that comes immediately to our minds: vows and religion are always associated in our thinking. Indeed, for religious men and women, vows of poverty, chastity and obedience are of the very essence of their vocation. Regularly vows are made after novitiate, and again a few years later; the only difference is between simple (temporary) and solemn (perpetual) vows. So it is a new concept when we encounter vows in the context of a Secular Order as we do in Carmel. Yet, the exclusive association of vows with religious people is not warranted. A glance at the Canon Law of the Church will illustrate this. The Canon Law speaks about vows in numbers 1191-98, just before a chapter on oaths. Our Secular legislation makes no reference to the Canon Law when it speaks about vows. That is not necessarily a defect or lacuna in our Constitutions. Our legislation is in accord with sacred canons, but it is essential to be familiar with these. Let me summarize the chapter. It begins with a precise definition: “A vow is a deliberate and free promise made to God concerning a possible and better good which must be fulfilled by reason of the virtue of religion.” Then it goes on to distinguish vows which are a) public, i.e., accepted in the name of the church, b) solemn or simple, c) personal or real, d) how vows cease or are dispensed, etc.
